Every Valheim Biome in Order: What Gates What, and What Kills You

Valheim's biomes are not a difficulty curve — they are a lock-and-key chain, and each boss drops the key to the next region. You cannot mine copper without Eikthyr's antlers, you cannot reach iron without The Elder's Swamp Key, and you cannot even sail to the Ashlands without beating The Queen. This is the whole progression in one place: nine biomes, what lives in each, what you extract, and — more usefully — what actually kills you there, which is rarely the boss.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.
The Nine Biomes, In Order
| Biome | Boss | What you extract |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Eikthyr | Beech, Birch, Oak, Flint, Stone, Raspberries |
| Black Forest | The Elder | Copper, Tin, Core wood, Finewood, Surtling Cores |
| Swamp | Bonemass | Iron (Scrap Iron), Ancient Bark, Guck, Thistle |
| Mountain | Moder | Silver, Obsidian |
| Plains | Yagluth | Black Metal, Flax, Barley, Tar |
| Mistlands | The Queen | Carapace, black marble, Eitr, Yggdrasil wood |
| Ashlands | Fader | Flametal, Grausten, Ashwood, Sulfur |
| Ocean | none | Serpent Scale, Chitin |
| World Edge | — | the map boundary, not a progression step |
The Ocean is the odd one out. It has no boss and is never "cleared" — you cross it at every stage of the game, and it is the only source of Serpent Scale and Chitin.
The Last Three, Where the Rules Change

The first six biomes gate you with an item. The Ashlands gates you with the sea itself.
The water around the Ashlands is boiling and destroys every wooden ship in the game — Raft, Karve and Longship alike. Only the Drakkar survives, and the Drakkar requires beating The Queen. That makes the Mistlands an absolute prerequisite for the Ashlands, in a way that no earlier biome is for its successor.
Compare that to the earlier gates, all of which are technically soft: a determined player can sneak into the Swamp without the Swamp Key and simply not open crypts, or visit the Mountain without a Wishbone and not find silver. The Ashlands cannot be entered at all.
The World Edge is not content. It is the boundary where the map stops.
What Actually Kills You

| Biome | The real threat |
|---|---|
| Meadows | Nothing. Boar 10 HP, Greyling 20 HP, Neck 5 HP |
| Black Forest | Trolls, and Greydwarfs arriving in numbers |
| Swamp | Constant rain — permanent Wet status, and cold at night |
| Mountain | Freezing — needs mead, a cape, or Wolf armour |
| Plains | Deathsquitoes, which aggro from the water while you sail past |
| Mistlands | The mist, and the vertical drops it hides |
| Ashlands | Cinder rain, which destroys your buildings |
Read that column and the pattern is obvious: from the Swamp onward, the environment kills more players than the creatures do.
The Swamp's permanent Wet status drains stamina and stacks with cold at night. The Mountain's Freezing effect is the reason Frost Resistance Mead exists. The Plains is the only biome where the danger reaches you at sea — a Deathsquito will aggro from the beach and follow you into open water.
The Meadows numbers are worth stating because they explain why the game feels gentle for an hour and then does not: a Greyling has 20 health, while a Draugr in a Draugr Village has 100 health and hits for 40 – 50. The jump is inside the starting biome.
The Gates Between Them

| From | Item | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Eikthyr | 3 Hard Antlers → Antler Pickaxe | Copper and tin — the whole Bronze age |
| The Elder | Swamp Key (one per player) | Sunken Crypts, and therefore Iron |
| Bonemass | Wishbone (one per player) | Finding Silver in the Mountain |
| Moder | 10 Dragon Tears | Artisan Table → Windmill, Spinning Wheel, Blast Furnace |
| Yagluth | 3 Torn Spirits | The Sealbreaker, which opens The Queen |
| The Queen | Drakkar | The Ashlands crossing |
Every one of those is a hard requirement, and four of them drop per player — so in a group, everyone needs their own before anyone can use the region.
The Artisan Table is the one people underestimate. Moder's ten Dragon Tears do not unlock a weapon; they unlock the production chain — Windmill, Spinning Wheel and Blast Furnace — which is what turns the Plains' Flax and Barley into armour and mead.
How to Use the Chain
- Do not skip a biome. Each boss drops the key to the next, and there is no way around it.
- Bring the environmental counter, not just the weapon — Frost Resistance Mead for the Mountain, Fire Resistance Barley Wine for the Ashlands.
- Resummon every boss so each player gets their own key and Forsaken Power.
- Build the Artisan Table immediately after Moder — it gates the Plains chain.
- Plan the Mistlands before the Ashlands. The Drakkar is not optional.
- Upgrade armour by biome, not by boss.
Practical tips
- Six items gate the whole game — Antler Pickaxe, Swamp Key, Wishbone, Dragon Tears, Torn Spirits, Drakkar.
- Four of them drop per player. Resummon for the group.
- From the Swamp onward, the weather kills more people than the monsters.
- Deathsquitoes aggro from the beach into open water — the Plains is dangerous to sail past.
- The Ocean has no boss and is the only source of Serpent Scale and Chitin.
- The Ashlands is the only hard-locked biome: no Drakkar, no entry.
Running your own Valheim server
Progression in Valheim is world state — bosses killed, altars found, global keys set — and it belongs to the world rather than to whoever happened to host that evening. A gamever Valheim server keeps that chain live for up to 10 players, so a group can resummon a boss whenever the last person needs their key. One-click backups protect a world several gates deep, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
Valheim's nine biomes run Meadows → Black Forest → Swamp → Mountain → Plains → Mistlands → Ashlands, with the Ocean crossed throughout and the World Edge as the map boundary. Each boss drops the key to the next region: Eikthyr's antlers make the pickaxe that unlocks copper, The Elder's Swamp Key opens the crypts that hold iron, Bonemass's Wishbone finds silver, Moder's 10 Dragon Tears build the Artisan Table, Yagluth's 3 Torn Spirits become the Sealbreaker, and The Queen yields the Drakkar — the only ship that survives the boiling water around the Ashlands, which makes that the one absolutely locked biome. And the more useful pattern: from the Swamp onward the environment is deadlier than the enemies — permanent Wet, Freezing, Deathsquitoes that follow you out to sea, and cinder rain that destroys your buildings.
