How to Beat Moder in Valheim (Offering, Attacks & Strategy)

Moder is immune to Frost — and you will be fighting it in the one biome where frost is the constant threat. That inversion catches people out: you need Frost Resistance Mead to survive the Mountain, and then the dragon's own 200 Frost attacks land at full value while your frost weapons do nothing back. The answer is fire, at ×1.5, and hard cover for the airborne phase that kills most players.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish creature stat blocks. The health, damage, cooldown and resistance figures below come from community datamining and can change with any patch.
Moder at a Glance
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 7,500 |
| Biome | Mountain — three altars, up to 8000 m from centre |
| Offering | 3 Dragon Eggs |
| Weak to | Fire ×1.5 |
| Immune to | Frost, Spirit, Stagger, Chop, Pickaxe |
| Neutral to | Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Poison |
| Drops | 10 Dragon Tears, Moder Trophy |
The 3 Dragon Eggs are the hard part, and worth planning for. They sit in Drake nests on mountain peaks, they weigh 200 each, and you cannot teleport with them. That is 600 units of weight to carry overland or by ship — which is precisely why the Megingjord belt or a cart matters here.
Plan the egg run as its own expedition, separate from the fight.
Two Phases, Four Attacks

| Attack | Phase | Damage | Range | Cooldown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bite | Grounded | 120 Pierce | 7 m | 30 s |
| Claw Swipe | Grounded | 110 Slash | 10 m | 30 s per claw |
| Cold Breath | Grounded | 200 Frost | 30 m line | 8 s |
| Spit Shotgun | Airborne | 16 icicles, 30 Pierce + 200 Frost each | — | 8 s |
The Spit Shotgun is what kills people. Sixteen projectiles, each carrying 30 Pierce and 200 Frost, on an 8 second cooldown. You do not out-heal that and you do not out-armour it — you break line of sight.
The Cold Breath is a 30-metre line on an 8 second cooldown, which means "stay at range" is not a defence during the grounded phase either. Both of Moder's short-cooldown attacks reach far.
Use the terrain, not distance. Mountain altars sit among rock formations. Fight beside them, put stone between you and the dragon when it takes off, and step out to shoot when the volley is spent.
The airborne phase is when you attack. It is circling and reloading rather than closing on you — that is your window with a bow.
Moder is immune to Stagger, so there is no parry-and-punish here either.
What to Bring

- Frost Resistance Mead — mandatory. Not for the boss but for the Mountain itself, which does continuous cold damage. Players die on the walk in more often than in the arena.
- Fire Arrows for the airborne phase. ×1.5 on a 7,500 pool is the difference between a long fight and an unwinnable one.
- A Silver Sword or Iron Mace for the grounded phase, if you prefer melee. Both are neutral — no penalty, no bonus.
- Wolf armour or Silver tier. Iron works, but the incoming numbers here are three to ten times what Bonemass hits for.
- Do not bring frost damage. Fully immune.
- Do not rely on poison or spirit. Spirit is immune; poison is neutral and there is no good poison weapon at this tier.
Bring the Wishbone if you have not already found silver — you will want the gear before this fight, not after.
The Reward: The Travel Power

10 Dragon Tears drop from the kill, and they build the Artisan Table — which unlocks the Windmill, the Spinning Wheel and the Blast Furnace. That is the entire Plains-tier production chain, so Moder is a hard gate on crafting as much as on progression.
The Moder Trophy grants a Forsaken Power, and after the rebalance it became the best all-rounder in the game:
Always tailwind when sailing, +300 carry weight, +10% movement speed, and 50% frost resistance.
The +300 carry weight is the clause that changed everything. You cannot dodge while overencumbered, so weight is a combat stat now, not just a convenience one — and 300 extra units is enormous. Combined with permanent tailwind and +10% movement speed, this is the power most players leave active by default.
It also carries 50% frost resistance, which makes return trips to the Mountain far cheaper in mead.
Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones, and resummon so everyone in the group can run it.
How to Beat Moder
- Run the egg expedition first. Three Dragon Eggs at 200 weight each, no teleporting — take a cart or a ship.
- Brew Frost Resistance Mead. For the biome, not the boss.
- Craft a deep stack of Fire Arrows — ×1.5 is your only damage multiplier here.
- Wear Wolf or Silver armour. Iron is thin against 200-damage attacks.
- Fight beside rock formations, never on open snow.
- Break line of sight when it takes off — the 16-icicle Spit Shotgun is the killer.
- Shoot during the airborne phase, melee during the grounded one.
- Take the trophy to the Sacrificial Stones.
Practical tips
- Immune to Frost — and you are in the frost biome. Fire (×1.5) is the answer.
- Frost Resistance Mead is for the Mountain, and it is not optional.
- The Spit Shotgun is 16 icicles at 30 Pierce + 200 Frost each. Use hard cover, not distance.
- Cold Breath is a 30 m line on an 8 second cooldown — range alone does not protect you.
- Dragon Eggs weigh 200 each and cannot be teleported. Plan a separate trip.
- 10 Dragon Tears build the Artisan Table, which unlocks Windmill, Spinning Wheel and Blast Furnace.
Running your own Valheim server
The Moder egg run is the kind of logistics that spans several sessions — a ship, a cart, 600 units of cargo and a mountain. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world and everything you have hauled into it live for up to 10 players, so a group can stage the expedition across evenings instead of one marathon. One-click backups protect cargo that took hours to move, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
Moder has 7,500 health, is immune to Frost, Spirit and Stagger, and takes ×1.5 from Fire — which is awkward, because the fight happens in the one biome where you need Frost Resistance Mead just to stand outside. Summon it with 3 Dragon Eggs, each weighing 200 and non-teleportable, at one of three Mountain altars up to 8000 metres out. Its grounded phase hits for 120 Pierce, 110 Slash and a 200 Frost breath along a 30-metre line, while the airborne Spit Shotgun fires 16 icicles at 30 Pierce + 200 Frost each every 8 seconds — which is why you fight beside rock formations and break line of sight rather than trying to out-range it. The reward is 10 Dragon Tears for the Artisan Table, and the game's best all-round Forsaken Power: permanent sailing tailwind, +300 carry weight, +10% movement speed and 50% frost resistance.
