How to Beat Bonemass in Valheim (Offering, Attacks & Strategy)

Bonemass is the boss that punishes bringing the wrong weapon harder than any other in Valheim. It is very resistant to Pierce and Fire at ×0.25 — meaning a bow does a quarter of its listed damage — while taking ×1.5 from both Blunt and Frost. That is a six-fold swing between the worst choice and the best. Bring a mace, drink Poison Resistance Mead, and this becomes one of the easier bosses. There is one exception to the no-bow rule, and it is worth knowing — see below.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish creature stat blocks. The health, damage, cooldown and resistance figures below come from community datamining and can change with any patch.
Bonemass at a Glance

| Resistant to | Slash ×0.5 |
| Very resistant to | Fire ×0.25, Pierce ×0.25 |
| Immune to | Poison, Stagger |
| Drops | Bonemass Trophy, Wishbone (one per player) |
The 10 Withered Bones come from Sunken Crypts — the same iron runs you are already doing after killing The Elder. You will have them long before you need them.
Why Frostner Exists

Look at the two weaknesses together — Blunt ×1.5 and Frost ×1.5 — and one weapon in the game covers both.
| Weapon | Damage types | Against Bonemass |
|---|---|---|
| Frostner | Blunt + Frost | Both multiplied by 1.5 |
| Iron Mace | Blunt | The budget answer, and perfectly good |
| Sword | Slash | ×0.5 — half wasted |
| Bow, plain arrows | Pierce | ×0.25 — a quarter |
| Fire arrows | 11 Pierce + 22 Fire | ×0.25 on both halves — the worst option in the game here |
| Frost arrows | 26 Pierce + 52 Frost | the Frost half gets ×1.5 — see below |
Frostner is a Silver-tier weapon, which most players do not have when they first reach Bonemass — and that is fine. The Iron Mace is the practical answer and it is exactly what the progression expects you to bring.
The important half of this table is what not to bring. Fire is the correct answer against The Elder and Moder, and players carry that habit into the Swamp where it does a quarter damage.
But do not write bows off completely. Arrows carry their own damage type, and it is added to the bow's damage before resistances are applied — so a Frost Arrow at 26 Pierce + 52 Frost has its large half multiplied by 1.5 while only the small half is quartered. Frost arrows are a genuinely viable ranged option here. Plain and fire arrows are not.
Its Three Attacks

| Attack | Damage | Range | Cooldown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punch | 80 Blunt + 50 Poison | 8.5 m arc, 66° | 7 s |
| Poison AoE | 130 Poison, lasting 15 s | 9 m radius | 30 s |
| Throw | Spawns 4 Skeletons or Blobs | — | 50 s |
Poison Resistance Mead is not optional. Between an 80+50 punch every 7 seconds and a 130 Poison cloud that lingers for 15 seconds, unmitigated poison will kill you faster than the physical damage will. The mead lasts 10 minutes — drink it before you place the offering, not after the fight starts.
The AoE lingers, so walk out of it. It is a 9-metre radius that persists for 15 seconds; standing in it to keep swinging is the single most common death here. Step out, let it expire, step back in.
The minions are a distraction, not a threat. Four spawn every 50 seconds, capped at eight of each type. Ignore them and keep hitting the boss unless they genuinely surround you — killing them wastes the mead timer you are racing.
Bonemass is immune to Stagger, so there is no stun-lock. It is also immune to Poison, so your own poison-damage gear does nothing.
The Reward: The Wishbone

The Wishbone drops one per player and it is a progression gate as hard as the Swamp Key. Equipped, it detects buried metal and hidden treasure — which is how you find Silver in the Mountains. There is no other reliable way to locate silver deposits, so no Wishbone means no Silver tier, no Frostner and no Wolf armour.
The Bonemass Trophy grants a Forsaken Power, and after the rebalance it is arguably the strongest in the game:
25% resistance vs pierce, slash and blunt, 100% reduced block stamina usage, and 5 stamina returned per block.
That second and third clause rebuilt the power around shields. Blocking costs no stamina at all and actively returns 5 stamina per block — which turns a shield carrier into a sustainable role rather than a stamina drain. In a group, one player running Bonemass power with a tower shield changes how every other fight in the game plays.
Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones, and resummon so everyone gets both a Wishbone and the power.
How to Beat Bonemass
- Collect 10 Withered Bones from Sunken Crypts during your iron runs.
- Brew Poison Resistance Mead — you want at least two, ideally more for a group.
- Bring an Iron Mace, or Frostner if you somehow have silver already.
- Leave plain and fire arrows at home — both are ×0.25. Frost arrows are the exception and work well.
- Drink the mead before placing the offering. It runs 10 minutes.
- Walk out of the Poison AoE rather than tanking it.
- Ignore the minions unless they box you in.
- Take the trophy to the Sacrificial Stones and resummon for the group.
Practical tips
- Blunt ×1.5, Pierce and Fire ×0.25 — a six-fold swing between best and worst weapon.
- Frost arrows still work, because the arrow's 52 Frost is boosted while only its 26 Pierce is penalised.
- Frostner hits both weaknesses; the Iron Mace is the realistic answer at this tier.
- Poison Resistance Mead before you summon, not after. Ten minutes, so do not dawdle.
- The 130 Poison AoE lasts 15 seconds in a 9 m radius. Leave it.
- Immune to Stagger and Poison — no stun-lock, and poison gear is dead weight.
- The Wishbone gates Silver entirely. One per player, so resummon.
Running your own Valheim server
Bonemass sits at the point where a group's gear starts to diverge — everyone needs their own Wishbone before anyone can farm silver, and mead has a brew timer that does not care about your schedule. A gamever Valheim server keeps the world and your fermenters running for up to 10 players, so the mead is ready when the group is. One-click backups and automatic updates protect a world several progression gates deep.
Conclusion
Bonemass has 5,000 health and the sharpest weapon requirements in Valheim: Blunt and Frost do ×1.5, while Pierce and Fire do just ×0.25 — so bring an Iron Mace (or Frostner, whose Blunt 35 + Frost 40 hits both weaknesses at once). Plain and fire arrows are wasted here — but Frost arrows are not, because the arrow's own 52 Frost is multiplied while only its 26 Pierce is quartered. Summon it with 10 Withered Bones at one of five Swamp altars, each at least 2000 metres from the centre. Poison Resistance Mead is mandatory against an 80 Blunt + 50 Poison punch every 7 seconds and a 130 Poison cloud that lingers 15 seconds in a 9-metre radius — drink it before you summon, since it lasts 10 minutes. It is immune to Stagger and Poison. The rewards are the Wishbone, one per player, which is the only reliable way to find Silver, and a Forsaken Power that grants 25% physical resistance, no block stamina cost, and 5 stamina back per block.
