How to Beat The Elder in Valheim (Offering, Attacks & Strategy)

The Elder takes double damage from fire. Not 50% more — ×2, the largest single weakness multiplier of any boss in Valheim. Against 2,500 health that turns a long attrition fight into a short one, and it means the correct answer is Fire Arrows, which you can craft from Wood Arrows, Resin and Feathers before you ever reach the Black Forest. Everything else about this fight is about not standing in the open.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish creature stat blocks. The health, damage, cooldown and resistance figures below come from community datamining and can change with any patch.
The Elder at a Glance
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 2,500 |
| Biome | Black Forest — four altars, 1000–7000 m from centre |
| Offering | 3 Ancient Seeds |
| Weak to | Fire — ×2 damage |
| Immune to | Poison, Spirit, Stagger, Chop, Pickaxe |
| Neutral to | Blunt, Slash, Pierce, Frost, Lightning |
| Drops | The Elder Trophy, Swamp Key (one per player) |
Note what "immune to Stagger" means in practice: you cannot stun-lock it, and there is no parry-and-punish rhythm here the way there is against ordinary enemies. This is a positioning fight, not a duelling one.
The 3 Ancient Seeds come from Greydwarf Nests and Burial Chambers in the Black Forest — the same places you are already clearing for copper. Most players have them before they find the altar.
Its Three Attacks

| Attack | Damage | Range | Cooldown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vine Shoot | 35 Pierce per vine, 25 vines per volley | 15 – 50 m | — |
| Root Spawn | Summons 15 hostile Roots | 15 m radius | 25 s |
| Stomp | 60 Blunt | 5 m radius | fires under 3 m |
Read the Vine Shoot line carefully. It reaches 50 metres and fires 25 vines at 35 Pierce each. There is no distance at which you are safe from it — "just kite it with a bow" is not a strategy against this boss the way it is against most.
What does stop it is solid cover. The Elder's altar arenas contain stone pillars, and vines do not pass through them. The whole fight is a rhythm: step out from behind a pillar, loose arrows, step back before the volley lands.
The Stomp only triggers within 3 metres, so melee players eat it and archers never see it. At 60 Blunt it is the single hardest hit in the fight.
The Roots are the reason people lose. Fifteen of them spawn inside a 15-metre radius every 25 seconds, and they will surround you while your attention is on the boss. Do not try to clear them all — reposition instead, and let them despawn behind you.
What to Bring

- Fire Arrows, on any bow. This is the whole strategy. ×2 on a 2,500 health pool effectively halves the fight, and no other option comes close.
- Craft them from Wood Arrow + Resin + Feathers — all Black Forest and Meadows materials, no Bronze required. Bring far more than you think.
- Armour: Bronze, or Troll hide if you would rather have the movement speed for dodging volleys.
- A melee backup — a Bronze Axe or Mace — for the Roots, which are trivial individually.
- No resistance mead is needed. The Elder deals Pierce and Blunt, which mead does not cover.
Fight beside the pillars, never in the open. If you take one thing from this guide, take that.
Do not bother with poison or spirit damage — it is immune to both.
The Reward: The Key to the Swamp

The Swamp Key is a hard progression gate, and one drops per player. It opens the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, which are the only meaningful source of Iron — and iron is the entire next age of the game. Without killing The Elder, your progression stops at Bronze.
The Elder Trophy grants a Forsaken Power:
+60% chop and pickaxe damage, and +30% health regeneration.
After the rebalance this became a genuine utility power rather than a curiosity. The +60% applies to felling trees and mining ore, which is most of what you do between bosses — and the +30% health regeneration is quietly useful on any long expedition.
Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones at the centre of the map, or the power is not yours. And the altar is reusable, so resummon until everyone in your group has both the key and the trophy.
How to Beat The Elder
- Gather 3 Ancient Seeds from Greydwarf Nests and Burial Chambers.
- Craft a large stack of Fire Arrows — Wood Arrow, Resin, Feathers.
- Eat three different foods and bring a bow you can actually draw repeatedly.
- Summon, then immediately move to a stone pillar. Do not open in the middle of the arena.
- Fire between vine volleys, stepping back into cover as they come.
- Reposition when the Roots spawn rather than fighting through them.
- Stay above 3 metres away and you will never see the 60 Blunt Stomp.
- Take the trophy to the Sacrificial Stones.
Practical tips
- ×2 fire damage is the largest boss weakness in the game. Fire Arrows, always.
- Vines reach 50 metres — distance does not protect you, cover does.
- The Stomp only fires within 3 m. Archers never take it.
- Immune to Poison, Spirit and Stagger — no stun-lock, no parry rhythm.
- The Swamp Key drops per player and gates Iron entirely.
- Resummon for the group — powers and keys are both per-player.
Running your own Valheim server
The Elder is where a group's progression genuinely forks: everyone needs their own Swamp Key before anyone can farm iron. A gamever Valheim server keeps the world live for up to 10 players so you can resummon whenever the last person is online, rather than scheduling around a host. One-click backups protect a world that now has real progression flags set, and automatic updates keep client and server in step.
Conclusion
The Elder has 2,500 health and takes double damage from fire — the biggest weakness multiplier of any Valheim boss — so Fire Arrows crafted from Wood Arrow, Resin and Feathers are the entire strategy. Summon it with 3 Ancient Seeds at one of four Black Forest altars, 1000 to 7000 metres from the world centre. Its Vine Shoot reaches 50 metres with 25 vines at 35 Pierce each, so kiting does not work — fight from behind the stone pillars instead, reposition when the 15 Roots spawn every 25 seconds, and stay beyond 3 metres to avoid the 60 Blunt Stomp entirely. It is immune to Poison, Spirit and Stagger, so there is no stun-lock. The reward is the Swamp Key, one per player, which opens the Sunken Crypts and therefore Iron — and a Forsaken Power giving +60% chop and pickaxe damage with +30% health regeneration.
