Every Valheim Mead, and Why Your Fermenter Never Finishes

Card listing the Fermenter's cost, cycle time and shelter requirement.

A Fermenter needs a roof and 70% cover to work at all — an open-air one simply never finishes. That single requirement is the most common reason a player comes back to a fermenter that has been sitting for a day with nothing to show. The other thing worth knowing before you start brewing: a cycle takes two in-game days, so the mead you need for tonight's boss fight had to be started yesterday. Here is every mead in the game, what it does and how long it lasts.

The Fermenter

FieldValue
MaterialsFinewood ×30, Bronze ×5, Resin ×10
Cycle timeTwo in-game days
OutputSix finished meads per batch
RequiresA roof and 70% cover

Six bottles per batch is generous, and it is why most players end up with far more healing mead than they need and never enough of the one resistance mead the next boss demands.

The Bronze cost places it after the Black Forest, so brewing opens up at roughly the same time as the Swamp — which is convenient, because the Swamp is where you first need Poison Resistance Mead.

Plan around the two-day cycle. This is the single most useful habit: before a boss trip, start the brew, then go and do the gathering. Coming back to a full fermenter is the reward for having thought ahead.

The Four Resistance Meads

Card listing Valheim's four resistance meads and their ingredients.

MeadIngredientsDuration
Fire Resistance Barley Wine10 Barley Flour, 10 Cloudberries10 min
Frost Resistance Mead10 Honey Glazed Chicken, 5 Thistle, 2 Bloodbag, 1 Greydwarf Eye10 min
Poison Resistance Mead10 Honey Glazed Chicken, 5 Thistle, 1 Neck Tail, 10 Coal10 min
Anti-Sting Concoction10 Cloudberries, 3 Grouper, 1 Fragrant Bundle10 min

All four run 10 minutes, which is the number to plan a boss fight around — drink before you place the offering, not after the fight starts.

These are not optional consumables, they are progression gates. Poison Resistance Mead is what makes Bonemass survivable, Frost Resistance Mead is what makes the Mountain survivable at all, and Fire Resistance Barley Wine is effectively mandatory for Yagluth and the Ashlands.

Note what Barley Wine costs: 10 Barley Flour. Barley grows only in the Plains, which means Yagluth gates itself — you need a defended Plains farm before you can brew the mead that makes its boss fight practical. That is covered in crop seeds.

The Anti-Sting Concoction is the underrated one. It prevents Deathsquito attacks for 10 minutes — and Deathsquitoes are the reason the Plains kills unprepared players, including from the water while you sail past.

The Utility Meads

Card listing Valheim's utility meads and their numeric effects.

MeadEffectDuration
Mead of Troll Endurance+250 carry weight5 min
Tonic of Ratatosk+15% run speed, +7.5% swim speed10 min
Brew of Animal Whispers×2 taming speed10 min
Lightfoot Mead−30% jump stamina, +20% jump height10 min
Draught of Vananidir−50% swimming stamina5 min
Love PotionIncreases Troll Hide spawning5 min

The Mead of Troll Endurance at +250 carry weight is the standout, and it is worth comparing: the Megingjord gives +150 permanently for 950 coins, while this mead gives +250 for five minutes. For an ore haul or a Hildir chest run — where each chest weighs 200 and cannot be portalled — five minutes of +250 is exactly enough to move a load to the boat.

Brew of Animal Whispers halves taming, taking the 30-minute process down to 15 — see taming and breeding.

The Love Potion is the odd one out: it is bought for 110 Coins rather than brewed.

Healing, Stamina and Eitr

Card comparing instant and lingering healing, stamina and eitr meads.

MeadEffectDuration
Minor Healing50 Healthinstant (10 s)
Medium Healing75 Healthinstant
Major Healing125 Healthinstant
Lingering Healing+25% Health regen5 min
Minor Stamina80 Staminainstant (2 s)
Medium Stamina160 Staminainstant
Lingering Stamina+25% Stamina regen5 min
Minor Eitr125 Eitrinstant
Lingering Eitr+25% Eitr regen5 min
Tasty Mead−50% Health regen, +100% Stamina regen10 s
Berserkir Mead−80% combat stamina use, but ×1.5 damage taken20 s

The split between instant and lingering is the useful distinction. Instant meads are emergency buttons; lingering meads are +25% regeneration for five minutes and belong before a fight rather than during one.

Berserkir Mead is a genuine trade, not a buff. −80% combat stamina for 20 seconds is enormous, and ×1.5 damage taken for the same window is equally enormous. It is a burst window for finishing something, not a general-purpose drink.

Tasty Mead's −50% health regen is the same shape — you are selling healing to buy stamina.

How to Run a Fermenter

  1. Roof it and enclose it to 70% cover, or it will never finish.
  2. Start the brew two in-game days before you need it.
  3. Brew the resistance mead for the biome you are entering, not the one you left.
  4. Drink resistance meads before you summon — they run 10 minutes.
  5. Keep a Mead of Troll Endurance for hauls — +250 carry weight beats the Megingjord's +150.
  6. Treat Berserkir and Tasty Mead as trades, not upgrades.

Practical tips

  • A Fermenter needs a roof and 70% cover. An open-air one never completes.
  • Two in-game days per cycle, six bottles per batch.
  • All four resistance meads last 10 minutes. Drink before, not during.
  • Fire Resistance Barley Wine needs Barley, which grows only in the Plains — Yagluth gates itself.
  • Mead of Troll Endurance is +250 carry weight against Megingjord's permanent +150.
  • Berserkir Mead costs ×1.5 damage taken. It is a burst window, not a buff.

Running your own Valheim server

A fermenter runs on in-game days, and on a single-player save those days stop when you log out. A gamever Valheim server keeps the two-day cycle turning for up to 10 players, so a brew started on Tuesday is six bottles by Thursday whether or not anyone is online. One-click backups protect a cellar built from Plains farming, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.

Conclusion

Valheim's Fermenter costs Finewood ×30, Bronze ×5 and Resin ×10, takes two in-game days per cycle, yields six bottles — and requires a roof and 70% cover, which is why an exposed one never finishes. The four resistance meads all last 10 minutes and are progression gates rather than conveniences: Poison for Bonemass, Frost for the Mountain, Fire Resistance Barley Wine for Yagluth and the Ashlands — and since Barley grows only in the Plains, Yagluth gates itself. Among the utility brews, Mead of Troll Endurance gives +250 carry weight against the Megingjord's permanent +150, and Brew of Animal Whispers doubles taming speed. Healing, stamina and Eitr each come in instant and lingering (+25% regen for 5 minutes) forms — and Berserkir Mead's −80% combat stamina costs ×1.5 damage taken, which makes it a trade rather than a buff.
