Where Every Valheim Crop Seed Comes From (& Why the Plains Is Mandatory)

You cannot farm ahead of your progression in Valheim, because every seed is locked to a biome. Carrots come from the Black Forest, turnips from the Swamp, onions from Mountain chests — and Flax and Barley grow only in the Plains and cannot be grown anywhere else. That last rule is the one that catches people: it means a Plains outpost is not a convenience, it is a requirement, and it sits upstream of the armour tier and the mead you need to fight Yagluth.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The seed sources below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.
Where Every Seed Comes From
| Crop | Source biome | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Carrot Seeds | Black Forest | Foraged in the biome |
| Turnip Seeds | Swamp | Foraged in the biome |
| Onion Seeds | Mountain | Chests in abandoned structures |
| Flax | Plains | Grows there naturally |
| Barley | Plains | Grows there naturally |
Note that Onion Seeds are the only one that comes from a chest rather than from the ground. If you have swept a Mountain and found no onions, you were looking at the terrain instead of inside the Abandoned Cabins and Mountain Towers.
And note what this ordering does to your farm. Your agriculture advances at exactly the pace of your biome progression — there is no way to plant a crop from a region you have not survived. Farming is a progression system wearing a survival system's clothes.
Why Flax and Barley Are Different

Flax and Barley are unique to the Plains, and they cannot be grown outside it.
That is a stronger restriction than the other crops face. Carrots, turnips and onions can be planted at your main base once you have the seeds; Flax and Barley have to be planted in the Plains itself, which means building and defending an outpost in the biome with Deathsquitoes and Fuling villages in it.
What they turn into is why it matters:
| Crop | Becomes | Which you need for |
|---|---|---|
| Flax | Linen Thread | Padded armour — the Plains tier at 26 – 32 per piece |
| Barley | Flour, and Fire Resistance Barley Wine | Yagluth, and the Ashlands |
Read the second row again. Yagluth's three attacks are all fire-based, and Fire Resistance Barley Wine is effectively mandatory for the fight. That wine is made from Barley. Barley only grows in the Plains. So farming is not a side activity here — it gates the boss.
The same pattern runs through the other crops. Onions make Frost Resistance Mead, which is what lets you survive the Mountain at all. Every resistance mead in the game traces back to a crop, which is why players who ignore agriculture hit a wall at the Mountain and again at the Plains.
What You Actually Need Them For

- Carrots — carrot soup, and more carrot seeds. The first crop most players plant.
- Turnips — turnip stew, the Swamp-era staple that carries you through Bonemass.
- Onions — onion soup, and Frost Resistance Mead for the Mountain and Moder.
- Flax — Linen Thread, and therefore Padded armour.
- Barley — flour for the better food tiers, and Fire Resistance Barley Wine.
Food is your entire character build in Valheim — you have 25 health and 50 stamina with nothing eaten — so a farm is not decoration. It is the difference between three cooked meats and three proper dishes, which is a difference measured in hundreds of health.
Practical Farming Rules

Seeds return more seeds, so the first planting is the hard one. Once a crop is established, each harvest funds the next and then some — the bottleneck is only ever getting started.
Never cook your last harvest. The single most common farming mistake is eating a crop you needed to replant, which sends you back to the source biome for more.
Build the Cultivator before you go looking for seeds. Arriving back at base with turnip seeds and no way to till the ground wastes the trip.
Fence the plot. Boars and wandering enemies will trample or eat unfenced crops, and a raid on an unprotected farm can wipe a full planting while you are elsewhere.
And build the Plains outpost earlier than feels comfortable. Flax and Barley have long lead times and they gate two separate things — your armour tier and your Yagluth attempt. Starting that farm the moment you can survive the biome is the single highest-value farming decision in the game.
How to Set Up Farming
- Craft the Cultivator before your first seed run.
- Collect Carrot Seeds in the Black Forest — the easiest starting crop.
- Take Turnip Seeds from the Swamp while you are there for iron.
- Search Mountain chests for Onion Seeds — they are not on the ground.
- Establish a Plains outpost for Flax and Barley. They grow nowhere else.
- Fence every plot, and never replant from your last harvest.
Practical tips
- Every seed is locked to a biome — farming advances at the pace of your progression.
- Onion Seeds come from chests, not from the terrain.
- Flax and Barley only grow in the Plains. An outpost there is mandatory.
- Barley → Fire Resistance Barley Wine → Yagluth. Farming gates the boss.
- Onions → Frost Resistance Mead → the Mountain. Same pattern, earlier.
- Fence your plots, or boars will eat the planting.
Running your own Valheim server
Crops grow on wall-clock time, and on a single-player save none of that happens while you are away. A gamever Valheim server keeps your plots growing and your Plains outpost standing for up to 10 players, so a farm actually compounds between sessions instead of pausing. One-click backups protect a planting that took a trip to a hostile biome to start, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
Every Valheim crop is locked to a biome: Carrot Seeds in the Black Forest, Turnip Seeds in the Swamp, Onion Seeds in Mountain chests, and Flax and Barley in the Plains — where, uniquely, they must also be planted, since they grow nowhere else. That makes a defended Plains outpost a requirement rather than a convenience, because Flax becomes Linen Thread and therefore Padded armour, while Barley becomes Fire Resistance Barley Wine, which is effectively mandatory for Yagluth and the Ashlands. The same logic sits one biome earlier: onions make Frost Resistance Mead, which is what makes the Mountain survivable. Farming in Valheim is not a side system — it gates two bosses and an armour tier. Build the Cultivator early, fence every plot, and never cook your last harvest.
