Hildir's Quests in Valheim: Three Dungeons, Three Bosses, Three Chests

Card listing Hildir's three quest dungeons and the chest each one yields.

Hildir sells almost nothing until you complete her three quests — and each chest you retrieve weighs 200 and cannot go through a portal. That last detail is what makes this side quest a logistics exercise rather than three boss fights. The dungeons sit in three different biomes at three different altitudes, and one of them requires you to be 200 metres up a mountain. Here is what is in each, what fights you, and how to get the chests home.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish creature stat blocks or spawn rules. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch. Zil & Thungr's stats are not documented on the sources used here — that fight is described by location and reward only.

Three Dungeons, Three Chests

    Spawn rules per dungeon:

DungeonPlacement
Smouldering Tombs3000 m apart, 3000 – 8000 m from centre, 1+ m altitude
Howling Caverns2000 m apart, 1000 – 8000 m from centre, 200+ m altitude
Sealed Tower3000 m apart, 8+ m altitude, in the Plains

The altitude requirement on Howling Caverns is the one to plan around. 200 metres or higher means a genuine mountain peak, not a foothill — so bring Frost Resistance Mead for the approach as well as the fight.

Each chest weighs 200, stacks to 1, and cannot be teleported. You can return a maximum of one of each type.

Brenna — Smouldering Tombs

Card listing Brenna's health and fire attacks.

FieldValue
Health1,200
BiomeBlack Forest
DropsHildir's brass chest, Brenna trophy (100%)

AttackDamageRangeCooldown
Sword strike60 Slash + 20 Fire1.6 m3 s
Fire nova75 Fire3 m radius10 s

At 1,200 health Brenna is the smallest of the three — less than half The Elder's 2,500 — and she is a melee fighter with one area attack.

Both of her attacks are short-ranged: 1.6 metres for the sword and a 3-metre nova. That makes her the most straightforwardly kitable of the three bosses — a bow and any amount of space handles her.

The fire component is small (20 on the sword, 75 on the nova), so fire resistance is a nicety rather than a requirement. Bronze or Iron armour is sufficient.

Geirrhafa — Howling Caverns

Card listing Geirrhafa's health, frost resistance and four attacks.

FieldValue
Health3,700 — three times Brenna
Resistant toFrost
BiomeMountain, 200+ m altitude
DropsHildir's silver chest, Geirrhafa trophy (100%)

AttackDamageCooldown
Ice claw40 Slash + 60 Frost2 s
Ice claw (double)60 Slash + 70 Frost each10 s
Frost blast100 Frost10 s
Ice nova90 Frost per wave, 3 waves15 s

Geirrhafa is a harder fight than it looks on the health bar, because almost everything it does is Frost — and it is resistant to Frost itself, so you cannot answer in kind.

Note the 2-second cooldown on the basic Ice claw. That is faster than any boss attack in the game outside The Queen's opening pair, and at 40 Slash + 60 Frost it adds up quickly.

Bring Frost Resistance Mead for the biome and the boss, and leave frost weapons at home. Fire is the sensible answer here, as it is against everything the Mountain contains.

Wolf armour is ideal if you have it — it halves frost damage, which cuts the effective threat of every attack in that table.

Planning the Run

Card explaining the logistics of carrying three 200-weight chests home.

The fights are not the hard part. The chests are.

Each weighs 200 and cannot be sent through a portal, which means every one is carried or shipped home by hand. Three of them is 600 units of cargo across three biomes.

    The tools that fix it:

  • Megingjord+150 carry weight, 950 coins from Haldor.
  • Moder's Forsaken Power+300 carry weight, plus permanent sailing tailwind. This is the better answer, and it is free.
  • A cart or a ship, since a Longship carries 18 slots and the chests are single-stack items.

Do one dungeon per trip. Attempting to chain all three while carrying 200-weight cargo means you are overencumbered for most of it — and you cannot dodge while overencumbered, which turns any wandering Fuling into a real problem.

Sequence them by biome danger: Smouldering Tombs in the Black Forest first, Sealed Tower in the Plains second, Howling Caverns last — the Mountain leg is the one that needs the most preparation.

How to Run Hildir's Quests

  1. Find Hildir first — Meadows, 3000 – 5100 m from the world centre.
  2. Take the Smouldering Tombs first. Brenna at 1,200 HP is the gentlest fight.
  3. Bring fire, not frost, to Howling Caverns, and Frost Resistance Mead for the 200 m altitude.
  4. Wear Wolf armour for Geirrhafa if you have it — it halves frost damage.
  5. Get the Moder power before the chest run — +300 carry weight solves the whole problem.
  6. One chest per trip. Overencumbered means no dodging.

Practical tips

  • Each chest weighs 200 and cannot be teleported. Plan transport before you fight.
  • Brenna: 1,200 HP, both attacks short-ranged — kite her with a bow.
  • Geirrhafa: 3,700 HP, resistant to Frost, with a 2-second basic attack. Bring fire.
  • Howling Caverns needs 200+ m altitude — a real peak, with a real cold problem.
  • Moder's +300 carry weight beats the Megingjord's +150 and costs nothing.
  • You cannot dodge while overencumbered. That is why one chest per trip.

Running your own Valheim server

Hildir's quests span three biomes and three separate expeditions, with cargo that cannot be portalled — which makes them a natural thing to split across a group and several evenings. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world live for up to 10 players, so one person can clear the Black Forest dungeon while another scouts the mountain. One-click backups protect chests that took a sea voyage to move, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.

Conclusion

Hildir's quests are three dungeons in three biomes, each guarded by a boss and each yielding one chest that unlocks part of her inventory. Smouldering Tombs in the Black Forest holds Brenna at 1,200 health, whose 60 Slash + 20 Fire sword and 75 Fire nova are both short-ranged and easily kited. Howling Caverns sits at 200+ metres altitude in the Mountain and holds Geirrhafa at 3,700 health, resistant to Frost, throwing 100 Frost blasts and a three-wave, 90-per-wave ice nova — bring fire and Frost Resistance Mead. Sealed Tower in the Plains holds Zil & Thungr. The real difficulty is transport: each chest weighs 200 and cannot go through a portal, so get Moder's +300 carry weight or a Megingjord first, and do one chest per trip — because overencumbered means you cannot dodge.
