How Food Works in Valheim: Three Slots, and Why You Have 25 Health

Card showing Valheim's three food slots and base health and stamina values.

With no food eaten, a Valheim character has 25 health and 50 stamina. That is the whole of you. Every point above those numbers comes from the three foods you are allowed to have active at once — which means food is not a consumable in Valheim, it is your character build. Players who die repeatedly in a new biome almost always have a food problem rather than a gear problem, and this guide explains the system rather than listing recipes.

The Three Slots

FactValue
Active foods at once3 — a hard cap
Base health, no food25
Base stamina, no food50 (each bar is 25)
Buff duration range600 – 3,000 seconds (10 – 50 minutes)
What each food addsmax Health, max Stamina, and max Eitr

Three is a cap, not a suggestion. You cannot stack a fourth, and you cannot run two of the same food simultaneously — eating one again refreshes it rather than adding to it.

The 3,000-second end of the duration range is Feast tier. Ordinary cooked food sits near the bottom at 600 seconds, which is why a boss fight and a building session want different menus.

What Food Actually Gives You

Card explaining that food raises maximum health, stamina and eitr rather than refilling them.

Food raises your maximum, it does not refill your current bar. This is the piece new players consistently misread. Eating does not heal you directly — it enlarges the pool, and then health regeneration fills it.

Each food contributes to three separate pools:

  • Health — your survivability ceiling.
  • Stamina — how much you can run, swim, block and swing.
  • Eitr — the magic resource, and only from the Mistlands onward. Earlier foods contribute none.

Food also provides health regeneration of 1 to 6, applied every 10 seconds. That regeneration is what actually heals you, and it is why eating before a fight matters far more than eating during one.

Do the arithmetic once and the design becomes obvious. At 25 health and 50 stamina you cannot survive a Greydwarf pack, let alone a boss. A well-fed mid-game character is running several times that. The gap between an unfed and a fed character is larger than the gap between two armour tiers — which is why "eat three foods" is the most repeated advice in Valheim and still the most ignored.

Reading a Food Item

Card explaining how to choose foods by their health and stamina split rather than the total.

Every food lists a health value and a stamina value, and the split matters more than the sum. Raspberries, for example, give 7 health and 20 stamina — a stamina food, despite being an early forage item.

Your activityWhat you want
Melee, tanking, boss fightsHealth-heavy
Bows, running, building, exploringStamina-heavy
Magic (Mistlands onward)Eitr foods — Marinated Greens, Seeker Aspic

The rule that follows: never run three of the same type. Three health foods leaves you unable to swing your weapon; three stamina foods leaves you dying to one hit. The reliable default is one health, one stamina, one flexible — and shift that flexible slot toward whatever you are about to do.

Cooking stations gate the tiers. You cannot skip ahead to good food without building the station that makes it, so a new biome usually means a new cooking station before it means new gear.

Practical Rules

Card listing practical food rules including refresh timing and the biome upgrade rule.

Refresh before it expires, not after. When a food buff runs out your maximum health drops immediately — and if your current health was above the new maximum, you are suddenly at full on a much smaller bar. Doing that mid-fight is how people die at 80% health.

Re-eating the same food refreshes its strength and duration. You do not need to wait for it to run out; you need to wait until it is partially digested, which the game shows with a flashing icon.

Upgrade your food when you change biome, not when you die. Food tiers are matched to biome danger, and arriving in the Swamp on Meadows food is the single most common cause of an early Swamp death.

Feasts suit boss fights — they sit at the 3,000 second end of the duration range, so they will not lapse mid-encounter.

Rested stacks on top, adding +50% health regeneration and +100% stamina regeneration. Food sets the ceiling; Rested changes how fast you climb back to it.

And remember what food does not do. It does not reduce incoming damage, and it does not make you hit harder. It gives you a bigger pool and faster refill — which is exactly what Valheim's stamina economy runs on.

How to Use the Food System

  1. Always have three foods active. Not two.
  2. Split them — one health, one stamina, one chosen for the task.
  3. Build the cooking station for a biome before you settle in it.
  4. Refresh when the icon flashes, not when the buff drops.
  5. Carry Feasts for bosses and ordinary food for everything else.
  6. Get Rested before you leave base — it doubles stamina regeneration.

Practical tips

  • 25 health and 50 stamina is your entire unfed character. Everything else is food.
  • Three slots, no duplicates. Re-eating refreshes rather than stacking.
  • Food raises your maximum; regeneration fills it. Eating does not heal you directly.
  • Read the split, not the total — Raspberries are 7 health and 20 stamina.
  • Durations run 600 to 3,000 seconds. Feasts are the long end and suit bosses.
  • Eitr foods only exist from the Mistlands. Before that, the third pool is zero.

Running your own Valheim server

Food is the part of Valheim that rewards a stocked base rather than a stocked inventory — cooking stations, a fermenter, a farm and someone who keeps them running. A gamever Valheim server keeps that base and its crops live for up to 10 players, so the group's food supply does not depend on one person being online to plant it. One-click backups protect a farm that took real time to build, and automatic updates keep client and server in step.

Conclusion

Valheim gives you 25 health and 50 stamina with nothing eaten, and lets you hold three food buffs at once — so food is your character build rather than a consumable. Each food raises your maximum health, stamina and Eitr (the third only from the Mistlands onward) and supplies 1 – 6 health regeneration every 10 seconds; the regeneration is what heals you, not the act of eating. Buffs run 600 to 3,000 seconds, with Feasts at the long end for boss fights, and re-eating a food refreshes it rather than stacking. Choose by the split — Raspberries are 7 health and 20 stamina — and never run three of the same type. Upgrade your menu when you change biome, not when you die, and layer Rested on top for +50% health and +100% stamina regeneration.
