How to Catch Katress in Palworld (Location, Skills & Drops)

Katress hero card showing the Dark Pal Katress, Paldeck #79, against a dark violet gradient.

Katress is the only drop-rate booster in Palworld that carries a second, unrelated effect — and the second one is arguably better than the first. Alongside the standard +40~80% more items from Neutral Pals, its partner skill gives a 10~50% chance not to consume a Pal Sphere when you throw one. On an endgame catching run using Ancient Spheres, that is a saving measured in real crafting materials, and almost nobody knows it exists.

Where to Find Katress

Where-to-find card listing Katress's widespread spawns and Black Marketeer availability.

  • Mountain Stream GrottoLevel 20 – 23 and 27 – 29.
  • Grass and glacier zones — widespread across the Palpagos Islands.
  • Yellow, orange and purple zones — Level 25 – 35.
  • Black MarketeerLevel 20 – 30 at a 41% chance of stock.
  • Pal Recruiter (Grass) — Level 15 – 25 at 1.3%.
  • Hidden Passage to the Oculus Gate — Level 61.

Katress is easy to obtain, which is the pleasant part of this article — a Level 20 catch or a merchant purchase at 41% stock gets you an effect that matters right through the endgame.

Bring Dragon attackers. Dark is weak to Dragon. Do not bring Neutral Pals — Dark beats Neutral, which again is a slightly circular constraint given what the Pal boosts. An Ultra Sphere is comfortable at Level 20 – 30.

Two Effects, One Slot

Card explaining Katress's Neutral drop bonus and its sphere-saving second effect.

    Mystical Black Magic grants:

EffectValue
Neutral Pal drops+40~80% more items
Pal Sphere consumption10~50% chance to not consume the sphere

That second line is unique. Every other one of Palworld's nine elemental boosters gives the drop bonus and nothing else — Menasting comes closest with +5~10% player Defense, which is minor by comparison.

Why the sphere clause matters so much. Catching a Level 80 Alpha routinely takes a dozen or more spheres, and at that point you are throwing Sol Spheres (Capture Power 58) or Ancient Spheres (64) — both crafted at the Ancient Workbench from materials you had to farm. A 10~50% chance to get the sphere back on every throw is, at the top of its range, effectively a third to a half off the cost of every catching session.

It applies to spheres of any tier, so it also quietly reduces the cost of bulk low-level catching — condensing fodder, Paldeck filling, breeding stock.

The practical recommendation: carry Katress on any dedicated catching trip, regardless of what element you are hunting. The Neutral drop bonus is the incidental half; the sphere saving is why it is in your party.

And its Neutral coverage is real tooKingpaca, Wumpo, Celesdir, Hartalis and the Primo family are all Neutral.

It does not stack, and Blazehowl Noct is the alternative Neutral booster — but Blazehowl Noct does not carry the sphere clause, so Katress is the better of the two.

Work, Drops & Stats

Card listing Katress's work ratings and its 1% technical manual drop.

At base Katress covers three jobs — Handiwork Lv3, Medicine Production Lv3, Transporting Lv2. Mid-table on a scale that runs to Lv8, and with Handiwork and Transporting both outranking Medicine Production in the work priority order, it will craft and haul.

Carry it rather than stationing it. Its value is entirely the party slot.

    Its drops:

DropQuantityRate
Leather1 – 2100%
Katress Hair150%
Advanced Technical Manual11%

The Advanced Technical Manual at 1% is worth knowing about. Technology points are otherwise gained by levelling, so any item that grants one is a rare shortcut — a 1% rate is not a farm, but on a Pal this common you will see a few over a save.

    As an Alpha it drops Ancient Civilization Parts (2 – 4, 100%) and Precious Pelt (2 – 4, 100%).

    At Level 80: HP 4,500 – 5,580, Attack 730 – 919, Defense 590 – 752. That Attack is respectable — Katress can fight if it has to.

How to Catch Katress

  1. Bring Dragon attackers. Dark is weak to Dragon.
  2. Do not bring Neutral Pals — Dark beats Neutral.
  3. Take the Mountain Stream Grotto population at Level 20 – 23.
  4. Or check the Black Marketeer — a 41% stock chance at Level 20 – 30 skips the hunt.
  5. Ultra Spheres are plenty.
  6. Then carry it on every catching trip, whatever you are hunting.

Practical tips

  • 10~50% chance to not consume a Pal Sphere. No other booster has a second effect like this.
  • It applies to every sphere tier — including Ancient Spheres at Capture Power 64.
  • Carry it on catching trips regardless of element. The Neutral bonus is the incidental half.
  • Blazehowl Noct also boosts Neutral but has no sphere clause. Katress is better.
  • Advanced Technical Manual at 1% — a rare route to a technology point.
  • Three mid-tier jobs. Carry it, do not station it.

Running your own Palworld 1.0 server

Catching an endgame roster is a project measured in sessions and spheres, and a sphere saved is a crafting run you do not have to make. On a dedicated Palworld 1.0 server your Ancient Workbench keeps producing spheres while you are offline and Alpha spawns stay live for whenever you have twenty minutes. Full crossplay lets a group share one Katress between them, and one-click backups protect a Paldeck that represents real hours.

Conclusion

Katress is a Dark Pal found in the Mountain Stream Grotto at Level 20 – 23, widely across grass and glacier zones, and from the Black Marketeer at a 41% stock chance. Its Mystical Black Magic skill grants the standard +40~80% more items from Neutral Pals — covering Kingpaca, Wumpo, Celesdir, Hartalis and the Primo family — but the reason to carry it is the second clause no other booster has: a 10~50% chance not to consume a Pal Sphere when thrown, at any tier, including Ancient Spheres at Capture Power 64. On an endgame catching run that eats a dozen spheres per Alpha, that is a third to a half off the cost. Blazehowl Noct boosts Neutral too but lacks the sphere clause, which settles the choice. It also drops an Advanced Technical Manual at 1% — a rare shortcut to a technology point.
