The Ocean in Valheim: Serpents, Wave Height and What Sinks a Cargo Run

Card explaining that the Ocean has no boss but holds two exclusive materials.

The Ocean is the only Valheim biome with no boss — and the only one you never finish with. You cross it in the Black Forest era with a Raft and you are still crossing it in the Mistlands with a Longship full of ore that cannot be teleported. It also holds two materials available nowhere else, and it has a mechanic almost nobody checks before setting sail: wave height varies from 0.5 metres in clear weather to 5 metres in a thunderstorm.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

The Ocean Has No Boss

Serpent Scale and Chitin have no other source in the game. Serpent Scale comes from killing a Serpent; Chitin comes from mining the barnacles on a Leviathan's back — the large "island" that submerges once you start hitting it.

There is no boss and no altar. The Ocean is not a region you clear once; it is infrastructure you use for the entire game.

The Serpent is the only hostile, and it hunts you rather than the reverse. It is drawn to ships, and a Raft against a Serpent is a losing proposition — which brings us to the part that actually decides these encounters.

Wave Height by Weather

WeatherWave height
Clear0.5 – 1.5 m
Rain2 – 3 m
Thunderstorm3 – 5 m

A thunderstorm produces waves up to ten times the height of a clear sky. That is not a cosmetic difference — it is the difference between a routine crossing and losing a ship with eighteen slots of ore aboard.

Check the weather before a cargo run. This is the single most useful habit in this article, and it costs nothing. Valheim's weather is visible before you launch.

Note what Moder's Forsaken Power does and does not do. It grants permanent tailwind, which solves your speed problem completely — but it does not calm the sea. A tailwind through 5-metre waves is a fast trip into a wave.

The Three Wooden Ships

Karve5004Finewood ×30, Deer hide ×10, Resin ×20, Bronze nails ×80
Longship1,00018Finewood ×40, Ancient bark ×40, Deer hide ×10, Iron nails ×100

The Raft has zero cargo slots. It is a coastal tool for crossing a strait, not a vessel — and at 300 health it will not survive a Serpent or a storm.

The Karve is the practical mid-game ship at 500 health and 4 slots, and it is fast and manoeuvrable enough to outrun a Serpent, which the Longship is not.

The Longship is the cargo hauler — 1,000 health and 18 slots — and it is what you use once you are moving ore between biomes. It is also slower to turn, which makes storms and Serpents genuinely dangerous.

None of the three survives the Ashlands crossing, where the water is boiling. Only the Drakkar does, and that requires beating The Queen.

How to Not Lose a Cargo Run

Card listing the three rules for surviving a Valheim sea voyage.

    Three facts, and they compound:

  1. Sunken items are unretrievable. What goes into the sea stays there.
  2. Destroying a ship loses its cargo with it.
  3. Swimming drains stamina fast, and then you drown.

Now add the rule that makes all of this matter: ore cannot be teleported. Copper, tin, iron, silver, black metal — none of it goes through a portal. That is the entire reason boats exist in Valheim, and it means every ore run is a cargo run with no undo.

So the rules that follow are simple:

  • Never carry ore in a Raft. Zero slots means it is on your person, and your person can drown.
  • Never sail non-teleportable cargo in a thunderstorm. Wait for clear weather; the ore is not going anywhere.
  • Take the Karve for scouting and the Longship for hauling — not the other way round.
  • Keep a repair station at each end of a route you use often.

And the Ocean rewards you for being there, which is easy to forget while worrying about sinking: Serpent Scale and Chitin are exclusive to it, and a Serpent hunted deliberately in clear weather with a Karve is a very different encounter from one that finds you in a storm.

How to Use the Ocean

  1. Check the weather before every cargo run. Clear is 0.5 – 1.5 m; a storm is 3 – 5 m.
  2. Match the ship to the job — Raft coastal, Karve scouting, Longship hauling.
  3. Hunt Serpents on purpose, in clear weather, rather than meeting one in a storm.
  4. Mine a Leviathan for Chitin — it submerges once you start, so bring a fast pickaxe.
  5. Remember ore cannot be portalled. Every ore trip is a sea trip.
  6. Get Moder's power for permanent tailwind — but do not mistake speed for safety.

Practical tips

  • The Ocean has no boss and is the only source of Serpent Scale and Chitin.
  • Thunderstorm waves reach 5 m against 1.5 m in clear weather — check before you launch.
  • Raft 300 HP / 0 slots, Karve 500 / 4, Longship 1,000 / 18.
  • Sunken cargo is gone permanently. There is no recovery dive.
  • Ore cannot be teleported, which is why boats matter at all.
  • Moder's tailwind does not calm the sea — it only makes you arrive faster.

Running your own Valheim server

Ore runs are the part of Valheim that spans sessions — mine on one evening, sail on another, smelt while nobody is watching. A gamever Valheim server keeps the world and your smelters running for up to 10 players, so a cargo route is something a group maintains rather than one person repeats. One-click backups protect a hold full of ore that took a voyage to move, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.

Conclusion

The Ocean is Valheim's only biome with no boss, and the only one you use for the entire game rather than clearing once. It holds Serpent Scale and Chitin, neither of which exists anywhere else — the first from Serpents, the second from mining a Leviathan. The mechanic worth internalising is wave height by weather: 0.5 – 1.5 m in clear skies, 2 – 3 m in rain, and 3 – 5 m in a thunderstorm — up to ten times the swell, and the difference between a routine crossing and a lost cargo. The three wooden ships are the Raft (300 health, 0 slots), the Karve (500, 4) and the Longship (1,000, 18), and none of them survives the boiling water around the Ashlands — only the Drakkar does. Since ore cannot be teleported, every metal run is a sea voyage with no undo: check the weather, match the ship to the job, and never carry ore in a Raft.
