The Named Places of Ashenfall: A Dragonwilds Landmark Gazetteer

Card mapping Dragonwilds' named landmarks to their regions.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds has five regions, and everybody knows their names. What is far less documented is everything inside them — the villages, temples, swamps, arenas and caves that Jagex reference constantly in patch notes and almost never explain. If someone on your server says "meet me at Dragon's Run" or "the Fenkenstrain quest is in Bloodblight Swamp", this is where those places are.

A note on method and sourcing. Every place below is named in Jagex's own posts. Jagex rarely say which region a place sits in, so region and power-level detail comes from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki and can change with any patch. Where nothing places a location, we say so rather than guessing.

The Starting Areas

PlaceWhat it is
Temple WoodsThe starting area, holding the Temple of Saradomin
Bramblemead Valley / Bramblemead VillageThe default settlement — "the same spot everyone builds a house in", east of Temple Woods
Whispering SwampThe buffer between Brynmoor and Ghornfell
Saradomin TempleHolds the home lodestone
Toxic SwampPoison terrain — ambient Swamp Gas
Velgar's arenaThe dedicated arena for the early boss Velgar

Bramblemead is where everyone starts and most people stay, and Jagex used exactly that fact when they halved teleport costs — the goal was making "moving from the same spot everyone builds a house in in Bramblemead Valley to somewhere a bit more ambitious less punishing."

Bramblemead Village is also where the Wise Old Man begins the Fishing questline. Craft a fishing net — which needs coarse thread, from Flax and a Spinning Wheel — and it prompts the quest.

The Saradomin Temple's lodestone is your reference point for travel costs. Jagex's worked example runs "from the very tippy-top northern-most point in Fellhollow, all the way back to the lodestone in the Saradomin Temple"58 Law Runes at 388 carry weight.

Toxic Swamp is the poison tutorial, and one thing about it changed: Jagex made sure "ambient Swamp Gas doesn't proc poison stacking when in the Toxic Swamp." If you remember it poisoning you for standing still, that is fixed. Note that Wild Jade Vines used to die to poison there — also fixed.

The Fractured Plains

Card explaining the Fractured Plains as the gateway to Fellhollow.

The Fractured Plains sit between the starting swamps and Fellhollow, and they are the game's acknowledged difficulty spike. Jagex flagged it themselves before Fellhollow launched:

"Fellhollow will require you to overcome the Fractured Plains. We've been looking at player feedback, behaviour, data and analytics and we're conscious that emerging from the swamps means you're running into the danger zone. We want to review how much of a source of friction that is."

So if your group hit a wall on the way north, that is a designed wall Jagex went back to look at — not a failure of your build.

They contain ruins worth building in. Jagex's community spotlight featured a player who "lovingly pieced together a home with some… help from the ruins in the Fractured Plains."

And they had a gravestone bug, since fixed: "gravestones were missing after deaths in the Fractured Plains."

Fellhollow

PlaceWhat it is
Emberwood VillageA settlement with a destructible barrier
Emberwood VaultJagex's informal name for Kalistrakthen Kara, a power level 5 vault
Dragon's RunNamed area — Jagex reference a post "between Emberwood and Dragon's Run in Fellhollow"
Imaru's arenaWhere the corrupted guardian dragon is fought — gates Dowdun Reach
Cleansing poolsCure Wither Rot — the only counter to Soul Rifting

Emberwood is the region's landmark pair — a village and a vault. Both had bugs worth knowing about historically: the village barrier came back after being destroyed "and vault progress was being lost despite having been completed", and an iron gate in Emberwood Vault would not open. Both fixed.

Imaru's arena is where corpse runs went wrong. Jagex fixed "an issue where graves could get stuck in the doorway to Imaru's arena before breaking the seals" — and noted it applied to some vaults too.

Fellhollow is also where Spectral Birds appear — hunt them for Soul Fragments — and where Mirror, Mirror is set, "deep in the heart of Fellhollow where Green Dragons reign supreme."

Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands

Card listing named locations inside Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands.

Dowdun Reach is "a vast, interconnected fortress" rather than an open region — Zamorakian, and "packed to the chaos-worshipping gills with Black Knights, Blue Dragons, and Mithril-tier gear."

PlaceDetail
Dowdun Reach ApproachHolds a fixed-location Lodestone
The Demon GateHas an elevator beside it
Anima VentsPresent throughout — Jagex "tuned down Anima Vent volume in Dowdun Reach"

Umbral Sands is "Ashenfall's largest region to date", entered by felling the Black Knight Titan.

PlaceDetail
Fuzan's TowerThe Fight Cave sits at its base
The Fight CaveRepeatable waves, lava on all sides — the Fire Cape
The Nightmare CrucibleBoss-rush, opened with Engrams — the only PL7 Core source
Kalphite Queen VaultOne of the region's three vaults
Dunes of UzzerNamed dune field — Miniaturized Mushrooms are gathered here
Cave of ScreamsNamed cave
Quicksand"Treacherous sand will subsume any poor adventurer who missteps"

Three vaults shipped with the region at once, so Umbral Sands is the densest area in the game for sealed interiors.

The Places Jagex Never Placed

Card placing the Dragonwilds locations Jagex named but never assigned to a region.

Several places appear repeatedly in Jagex's patch notes without them ever saying which region holds them. The community wiki places all of them — with power levels, which is more useful still:

PlaceRegionPower level
Temple WoodsBrynmoor — the starting area, holds the Temple of Saradomin
Bramblemead ValleyBrynmoor, east of Temple Woods2
Whispering SwampBrynmoor — a buffer between Brynmoor and Ghornfell2
Fractured PlainsGhornfell, north of the Whispering Swamp3
Stormtouched HighlandsGhornfell, north-western Ashenfall4
Bloodblight SwampGhornfell, eastern part
The Burning SpireUmbral Sands

The Burning Spire turns out to be the important one. It is "the home of the KotHaar, where Fuzan's lair lays" — and it contains the Fight Cave. So the wave challenge, the Dragon General and the region's obsidian faction all share one area.

Bloodblight Swamp has a cause, not just a mood. Its poisonous green mists, corrupted water and exploding plant traps were "created by the blood of General Velgar" — the same Velgar whose arena sits in Ghornfell. Bring an antipoison potion.

The Stormtouched Highlands' storm has a source too: the region is "littered with the bones of ancient wyrms created by the dragonkin Lacrussa", and it is home to well-trained Garou warriors.

And one entry on our earlier list was never a place at all. The Hall of Heroes is a lore scrap — a journal found at The Bastion in Dowdun Reach, behind the statue on the top floor. That is why it only ever appeared in patch notes attached to a Journal Entry typo fix.

"Highland Vault" is not a place either — it is a vault, and its real name is Chaktan Kara, in the Stormtouched Highlands. Jagex spelled it both "Highland Vault" and "Highland Swamp Vault" in different fixes.

And do not be misled by two names that are not places:

  • "Beyond The Spire" is a heading in Jagex's roadmap post, not a location.
  • "Goblin Village" in Jagex's posts refers to a reorchestrated RuneScape music track, added alongside Morytania and Goblin Game in a 30–45 minute music update — not an area they announced.

Two general navigation notes that apply everywhere:

  • Lodestone teleports on the edges of the map used to be one-way because they failed to display. Fixed.
  • Map markers used to guide you to the wrong location on respawn. Also fixed.

Practical tips

  • Bramblemead Valley is the default build spot; Bramblemead Village starts the Fishing questline with the Wise Old Man.
  • The Saradomin Temple holds the home lodestone — Jagex's own travel-cost benchmark.
  • The Fractured Plains are the acknowledged difficulty spike between the swamps and Fellhollow.
  • Emberwood Village and Emberwood Vault are Fellhollow's landmark pair.
  • Dowdun Reach Approach has a fixed-location Lodestone.
  • The Fight Cave sits at the base of Fuzan's Tower; the Nightmare Crucible is separate.
  • Bloodblight Swamp and Stormtouched Highlands hold the two best side-quest rewards.
  • "Goblin Village" is a music track, not an announced area.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Knowing where things are is knowledge a group accumulates together — scouted vault entrances, a lodestone chain, the shortcut through the Fractured Plains. On a persistent world that knowledge builds up in one shared map instead of five separate saves. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Ashenfall's five regions contain a couple of dozen named places, most of which Jagex only ever mention in passing. The starting areas hold Bramblemead Valley — where everyone builds — the Saradomin Temple and its home lodestone, the Toxic Swamp, and Velgar's arena. The Fractured Plains are the acknowledged difficulty spike between the swamps and Fellhollow. Fellhollow holds Emberwood Village, Emberwood Vault, Dragon's Run, Imaru's arena and the cleansing pools. Dowdun Reach adds the Demon Gate and the fixed lodestone at Dowdun Reach Approach; Umbral Sands adds Fuzan's Tower, the Fight Cave, the Nightmare Crucible, the Dunes of Uzzer, the Cave of Screams and three vaults. And the places Jagex named without ever placing all have homes: Bloodblight Swamp and the Stormtouched Highlands are in Ghornfell, the Fractured Plains sit north of the Whispering Swamp, and The Burning Spire is the Umbral Sands area holding Fuzan's lair, the KotHaar and the Fight Cave. Two entries on that list were never places at all — "Highland Vault" is the vault Chaktan Kara, and the Hall of Heroes is a lore scrap at The Bastion in Dowdun Reach.
