Beating Fuzan in Dragonwilds: Eight Phases on a Floor That Is Trying to Kill You

Fuzan has eight phases, and after the first one the floor itself deals fire damage. Umbral Sands' boss does not simply attack you — he progressively converts the arena into hazard, section by section, while a heat meter fills from the permanent sunlight overhead. By the later phases you are fighting a dragon on a rotating sliver of safe ground. Here is how each phase works and what to bring.

Before You Walk In
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Region | Umbral Sands |
| Power level | 6 |
| Weak to | Water |
| Immune to | Poison, Bleed, Burning |
| Resists | Fire |
| Encountered in | Icthlarin's Little Helper |
Three immunities plus a fire resistance means the entire status-effect toolkit is off the table. No weapon poison, no barbs, no fire arrows, and fire spells actively underperform.
Water is the answer. "Fuzan is weak to water attack… so it is recommended to use water rune damage to do tons of critical damage." For ranged, Enchanted Iron Bolts carry a 15% chance to deal water magic damage.
Two preparations before the attempt:
- Place a lodestone at the entrance of the Fight Cave. The approach is long and you will be making it more than once.
- Collect sanguine urns. Each adds 10 maximum health over a base of 100.
The consumables list is the power level 6 standard, plus one addition:
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Stuffed Catfish | 200 health |
| Undead Delight | 180 health and Sea Life — 3 HP/second for 20 minutes |
| Eggs Royale | 120 health and Sea Life, if you would rather not grind |
| Pumpkin Spice Infusion | Soul Food from the infusion slot, so it runs alongside Sea Life |
| Antifire Potion | Removes Burning stacks and grants 33% resistance |
| Strong Tea | Restores 20 stamina — specifically recommended for the Fight Cave |
Strong Tea is the entry worth noticing. It is the only stamina restorative on any boss list, and it appears here because the Fight Cave adds waves before the boss. It also does not overwrite your infusion perk, so it is free to drink.
The Attacks

| Attack | What it does |
|---|---|
| Claw sweep | He raises a hand and slashes backwards at close range |
| Stomps | Launches lava-imbued earth spikes along the ground — like Velgar's and Imaru's |
| Lava Stomp | Both hands slam, pooling lava over his feet to deny close range |
| Fire breath | Sweeps across the entire arena, like Imaru's |
| Fire Rain | He looks up and spits four fireballs around the arena, like Velgar's poison spits |
Lava Stomp is the one that changes melee's job. It exists specifically to make his feet unsafe, which is where a melee player wants to be. When it lands, melee has to disengage and wait rather than trade.
And the heat meter runs the whole time. "The arena is always sunny, so the sun will be something you want to avoid taking damage from as well." Find shade to stop it filling — this is Scorch by another name, and its counters are the same: shade, Frosted Flavours food or infusions, and the Desert set, which carries Resist Scorch Buildup and increases with each piece worn.
The Eight Phases

Phase 1. He appears. Avoid standing on hot floor before he lands — the centre is safest. He uses his standard attacks. When his health drops far enough, he breathes fire onto the ground, making the terrain deal fire damage and Burning, and flies off.
Phase 2. The scenery changes and Fuzan is gone. He summons several power level 6 KotHaar Thralls — variants of KotHaar-Hur and KotHaar-Ket. Kill them and he drops into the centre, exploding flames outward on impact. Move before he lands. He then relocates, knocking down a wall, breathes fire beneath him to heat two sections of ground, uses Fire Rain, and combines Stomp with Lava Stomp.
Phase 3. He lands, breathes fire again to heat two more sections, and repeats his normal attacks until he flies off.
Phase 4. Scenery change. One section becomes hot and starts rotating counter-clockwise. Stand in the middle during the rotation, and run when you see him preparing to drop. On landing he stomps with all four legs — time the dodges. Watch the heat meter here, because the safe ground is shrinking while the sun keeps filling it.
Phase 5. Four sections of ground go hot and two thralls appear. Killing them drops him in the centre — move out of the four stomps. He then flies off and charges through a passage, causing spikes, before crashing into a wall. From there he uses Fire Rain, fire breath, and then the phase's new mechanic: he flies up and marks a player, then breathes a powerful dragon fire attack at them.
That marked attack is the fight's biggest single threat. The counters are stacked, not chosen: the Dragoncurse Shield with Antifire active makes it survivable, and you should still dodge — "you'll have to dodge several times as his flames follow you."
Phase 6. He charges again, lands somewhere new, and cycles regular attacks while summoning thralls and flying up to use Fire Rain, ending with a line of fire from the far side of the arena to the ground beneath him.
Phase 7. The ground heats from both sides until only one spot remains. Get there fast — he drops and stomps again. With little space left, the dodges have to be calm rather than panicked. He also uses his charge attack several times.
Phase 8. Like phase 5, but three sections stay clear and rotate every few seconds, with several thralls summoned. He lands and repeats the stomps.
Fighting It as a Group

Fuzan's structure divides naturally. Four of the eight phases open with thralls that must die before he lands, which is the clearest place for a group to specialise: a couple of players clear adds while the rest hold position for his drop.
Three things a group should agree before entering:
- Who carries the Dragoncurse Shield. The marked dragon fire attack in phase 5 targets one player, and a shield that blocks dragon fire changes it from lethal to survivable.
- Where "the middle" is. Phases 4, 7 and 8 all resolve to one shrinking piece of safe ground, and a group standing in the wrong place discovers it at the same moment.
- Everyone brings Antifire. It removes Burning stacks rather than merely resisting them, and this fight applies Burning from the floor as well as from him.
And there is a lighter version of the encounter. The Trial of Fuzan is a ten-wave version of the Fight Cave, which the wiki recommends as the casual approach — worth doing first if your group wants the practice without the full run.
The wider Umbral Sands context matters too. This is the region where walking is itself a hazard — Scorch drains hydration, and hydration drives your stamina regeneration across an eightfold range. Take the magic carpet to the door, and arrive with a full bar rather than one you spent crossing sand.
Practical tips
- Fuzan is weak to water; immune to Poison, Bleed and Burning; and resists fire.
- Use water runes and Enchanted Iron Bolts. Fire spells underperform.
- Place a lodestone at the Fight Cave entrance before you attempt it.
- Eight phases, and the floor turns to hazard from phase 1 onwards.
- Watch the heat meter — the arena is permanently sunny. Find shade.
- Lava Stomp exists to deny melee his feet — disengage rather than trade.
- Phase 5 marks a player for tracking dragon fire — Dragoncurse Shield plus Antifire, and still dodge.
- Four phases open with KotHaar thralls — the natural group job.
- Strong Tea restores 20 stamina and does not overwrite your infusion perk.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
An eight-phase fight behind a wave-based cave approach is not a one-evening project, and it needs a world that survives between attempts with everyone's gear intact. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Fuzan is Umbral Sands' power level 6 boss and the longest fight in Dragonwilds — eight phases, during which he progressively converts the arena floor into fire damage while a heat meter fills from permanent sunlight. He is weak to water, immune to Poison, Bleed and Burning, and resistant to fire, so water runes and Enchanted Iron Bolts are the damage and the entire status-effect toolkit is wasted. His five attacks — claw sweep, stomps, Lava Stomp, an arena-wide fire breath and Fire Rain — are joined from phase 2 onward by KotHaar thralls that must be cleared before he lands, and from phase 5 by a marked tracking dragon fire attack that wants the Dragoncurse Shield, an active Antifire Potion, and repeated dodging all at once. The later phases are spatial problems more than damage ones: phase 4 rotates the safe ground counter-clockwise, phase 7 narrows it to a single spot, and phase 8 leaves three rotating sections. Bring Strong Tea for the Fight Cave waves, Sea Life and Soul Food from separate slots for regeneration, and consider the ten-wave Trial of Fuzan first.
