Beating Velgar in Dragonwilds: A Poison Endurance Test With a Pedestal Exploit

Card showing Velgar's attacks and immunities in Dragonwilds.

Velgar has no weakness, and he is immune to poison, to burning and to stagger — so parries, fire arrows and weapon poison all lose their point. Dragonwilds' first true boss is not a damage-type puzzle like the ones that follow; it is an endurance test built entirely around his poison, which drains roughly 4 health per second until cured. Bring antipoison, learn one flight pattern, and know that a documented pedestal trick can trivialise the whole thing.

On sourcing. Jagex do not publish boss mechanics. The strategy below comes from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, which flags its own boss pages as being updated for 1.0 — so expect details to move.

Before You Walk In

Velgar is Ghornfell's power level 4 boss, fought during Dragon Slayer, and he is the green dragon responsible for destroying Bramblemead.

Gear at power level 4 or above, and collect sanguine urns — each adds 10 maximum health over a base of 100.

The poison kit is the non-negotiable part:

  • Lesser Antipoison Potion, for the Antipoison perk — removes existing poison stacks and grants 33% resistance.
  • Mushroom Kebab, which stacks Fungal Fortitude on top and heals.
  • Berry Drizzle Pan-Seared, for 160 health per use.

Note that antipoison potions remove stacks while food only slows the gauge filling. You want both, and the potion is the one that saves you when the bar is already full.

The Damage You Can Actually Do

Because Velgar has no weakness, this is about what is not wasted rather than what is best.

StyleTakeWhy
MeleeAbyssal Whip, if you have itMore combos, faster hit rate, better crit chance, 25 Bleed buildup — and only 50 stamina per combo
RangedIron Barbed Arrows for Bleed; Enchanted Iron Bolts for a 15% chance of 10% water magic damage; Enchanted Blurite Bolts for earthHe is immune to poison, so poisoned ammunition is dead weight
MagicStaff of Light — a 4.5× rune damage multiplier, the highest of its tierOr the Draconic Staff at 4.1× with +15% crit chance and −15% durability

On runes: he is immune to Burning, so use water and air rune damage. Fire still works as damage — you simply get none of the burn.

The Staff of Light is the magic answer specifically because there is no better one at this stage, and its recipe comes from Highlighting the Problem, a Brynmoor quest. If you are going to fight Velgar with magic, do that quest first.

The spell set is the standard boss kit: Surge for free long dodges, Tempest Shield for melee and crossbow users, Enchant Weapon: Air for attack speed, Spectral Arrows for ranged. Whetstone adds +2 melee damage for ten minutes; Magical Focus adds +15% staff damage; the Lesser Attack and Lesser Magic potions add +25% critical hit chance for their respective styles.

And note that Velgar's stagger immunity removes an entire layer of play. In every other fight, parrying staggers and staggered enemies cannot retaliate. Here, parrying only prevents damage. The melee armour 3/3 set bonus of +25% damage to staggered targets does nothing in this fight.

The Fight

Card explaining Velgar's attack pattern and poison barrage phase.

    Velgar's moveset is five attacks:

AttackRange
Claw StrikeMelee only
BiteMelee only
Claw SlamSends earthen spikes toward you
Head SwingClose
Dragon Breath (Poison)A cone of poisonous ground in front of him

He only bites or claw-strikes if you are in melee range, which is the single most important structural fact about the fight: the dangerous close attacks are optional. At range you face spikes and breath, both of which telegraph.

Then the phase mechanic. "Each time his health is reduced by roughly 25%, until reaching the final 25%, Velgar will fly up into the sky and rain down poison barrages that will land where there are red-orange circles on the ground."

Two details make that dangerous. The circles can overlap — standing where two meet takes the damage twice — and the barrage stacks poison on a character who may already be poisoned from the breath cone.

So the fight has a rhythm: damage, sky phase, reposition, repeat, three times. The final 25% has no sky phase, which is when he stays committed and you finish it.

The failure mode is running out of antipoison, not running out of health. Once Antipoison or Fungal Fortitude lapses, his poison attacks rapidly poison you and drain roughly 4 health per second until cured — and there is no healing potion in Dragonwilds to outpace that. Watch the buff timer as carefully as the health bar.

The Pedestal Strategy

Card explaining the Velgar pedestal strategy in Dragonwilds.

There is a documented way to skip most of this fight.

Standing on the horn's holder — the pedestal — puts you out of reach of close combat and the ground spikes, which are the attacks that do the most damage. You still absorb poison damage, so the antipoison kit still matters, and the only time you need to leave is to dodge the poison rain if you choose to dodge it at all.

The complication is that the pedestal vanishes the moment the battle starts. The documented workaround:

  1. Place a lodestone in front of the boss entrance before starting.
  2. Start the encounter as normal.
  3. Teleport out of the boss instance by pausing the game and pressing X.
  4. Use the lodestone again to return to the boss entrance.
  5. Re-enter. The fight begins with the pedestal back, and it stays.

This is worth flagging honestly: it reads like a bug rather than a designed strategy. It relies on an instance reset restoring geometry that the encounter is supposed to remove. Expect it to be patched, and do not build a group's progression plan around it.

On a shared server, the more durable answer is composition. Velgar has no weakness, so no combat style is punished — which makes him the one boss where a group can bring whatever they already have, split melee, ranged and magic freely, and rely on everyone carrying their own antipoison rather than on a single optimal loadout.

Practical tips

  • Velgar has no weakness. He is immune to poison, Burning and stagger.
  • Poisoned ammunition and fire arrows are wasted — barbed and enchanted bolts are not.
  • Bring Lesser Antipoison (removes stacks) and Fungal Fortitude food (slows the gauge).
  • Unchecked, his poison drains roughly 4 health per second.
  • He only bites and claw-strikes in melee range — the close attacks are optional.
  • Every 25% of health he flies up and rains poison onto circles that can overlap.
  • The final 25% has no sky phase.
  • The Staff of Light (4.5×) is the magic pick; its recipe is from Highlighting the Problem.
  • The pedestal strategy works but looks like a bug — do not rely on it long-term.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Velgar is most groups' first real wall, and walls take repeat attempts on evenings that do not all belong to the same person. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Velgar is Ghornfell's power level 4 boss and Dragonwilds' first real test. He has no weakness and is immune to poison, Burning and stagger, which quietly removes three tools at once — poisoned ammunition, fire arrows and the parry-and-stagger loop all stop paying. What he does have is poison, delivered through a breath cone and through barrages every 25% of health lost onto overlapping red-orange circles, and left unchecked it drains around 4 health per second. So the fight is won on consumables: Lesser Antipoison to clear stacks, Fungal Fortitude food to slow them, and Berry Drizzle Pan-Seared at 160 health to recover. His bite and claw strike only reach melee range, so a patient ranged or magic approach faces only spikes and breath — and the Staff of Light's 4.5× rune multiplier, unlocked by the Brynmoor quest Highlighting the Problem, is the strongest magic option at that tier. A pedestal strategy documented on the wiki removes most of the danger, but it requires teleporting out and back to restore geometry the fight deletes, which makes it look far more like a bug than a tactic.
