The Dragonwilds Primary Quest Chain in Order, and What Each One Unlocks

Card showing the Dragonwilds primary quest chain and the regions each one opens.

Every region in Dragonwilds past the starting one is locked behind a specific primary quest, and one of those unlocks follows your character into every world you ever play. The campaign — Kuldra's Saga — runs as a numbered chain, and knowing the order tells you exactly what to gear for and when. It also answers the question every group asks on a shared server: what does a latecomer have to do before they can join us? Here is the spine.

On sourcing. The details below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

The Chain

#QuestBossOpens
5thDragon SlayerVelgar — power level 4Progress into Ghornfell
6thWithering HeightsImaru — power level 5Fellhollow
7thBlack Knight's FortressBlack Knight Titan — power level 6Dowdun Reach, then the door to Umbral Sands
8thIcthlarin's Little HelperFuzan — power level 6Umbral Sands, the Nightmare Crucible, the Fight Cave

Dragon Slayer is the fifth primary quest, so four shorter ones precede it — the opening sequence through First Steps and Getting Started. It is the first of the main story, and where "their legend begins."

Note the power level progression: 4, 5, 6, 6. Each boss is a check on whether you have geared up in the region you just cleared, not on how long you have played.

And note who they all serve. Velgar was one of Kuldra's most trusted allies in the Dragon Rebellion; Imaru controls Fellhollow's undead; dragons across Ashenfall are all servants of Kuldra. The campaign is a sequence of removing her generals — which is why the boss listed at power level 8 is Kuldra herself.

The Gates, Precisely

Card explaining exactly what gates each Dragonwilds region.

The prerequisites are more precise than "finish the previous quest", and the differences matter:

To reachYou need
GhornfellProgress through Dragon Slayer — the quest routes you there
FellhollowDragon Slayer completed, and Withering Heights partially started
Dowdun ReachWithering Heights completed — it is Black Knight's Fortress's stated requirement
Umbral SandsDefeat the Black Knight Titan, then interact with the door at The Bastion
The Nightmare CruciblePartial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper
The Fight CaveFull completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper
The magic carpetPartial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper

Three of those are partial-completion gates, which is the detail most guides flatten. The Nightmare Crucible opens before the Fight Cave, which is the reverse of how the desert content is usually assumed to be ordered — and the magic carpet arrives partway through the Alcarrid clan's tasks rather than at the end of the quest.

And there is one permanent unlock in the whole chain. After first reaching Fellhollow — by soul-rifting through the Spectral Door"you will be granted permanent access to Fellhollow in all worlds." That travels with the character, not the world.

But world state does not travel. "If you start a fresh world, regardless of how far you have done the quest or fully completed it, you will need to re-activate all of the statues" at Emberwood. Character progress persists; world puzzles reset.

What Each Quest Actually Gives You

Card listing the gear rewards from each Dragonwilds primary quest.

QuestRewards
Dragon SlayerDragonblight Shield, Tome of the Dragon Slayer, the Dragon Slayer achievement
Withering HeightsTome of the Undying, Undead Draconic Visage, Dragoncurse Shield
Black Knight's FortressThe broken Titan's Wrath, letting you craft the sword; access to Umbral Sands
Icthlarin's Little HelperDragonfire Shield from Icthlarin, the Magic Carpet, 1,800 Garou Chits across nine tasks

Look at the shield column and the design becomes obvious. The campaign hands out the dragon shield line one rung at a time:

Anti-dragon Shield (Vertentis Kara vault, during Dragon Slayer)Dragonblight (Dragon Slayer)Dragoncurse (Withering Heights)Dragonfire (Icthlarin's Little Helper).

Each is built from the previous one plus a Draconic Visage, and each adds a bigger parry payload — poison cloud, then a ghostly claw, then Fuzan's Fury, a burst of lava. All four block dragon fire, which ordinary shields do not.

So the single most valuable thing you can do while questing is not skip the vault chests. The Anti-dragon Shield recipe unlocks in Vertentis Kara during Dragon Slayer, and it is the root of everything above.

And the shield you get from each quest is what you want for the next one. The Dragoncurse Shield from Withering Heights damages enemies when you parry — precisely what the Black Knight Titan fight, which is built on constant blocking, asks for.

Running the Chain as a Group

Card giving practical Dragonwilds quest chain advice for a shared server.

The most common shared-server problem is a group at mixed progress, and it has a clean structural explanation:

Per playerShared by the world
Quest progressBoss defeats
Journal contentsRegion unlocks in that world
Map pins and revealed landmarksStructures and chests
Vault discoveryPuzzle state, including Emberwood's shrines
Achievements

    Three consequences follow:

  1. A latecomer cannot skip the chain. Region access is per-character quest progress, so someone joining a fully cleared world still has to run Dragon Slayer and Withering Heights themselves to reach Fellhollow.
  2. Kill bosses together. Achievements are per-player and boss defeats are world state — a player who joins after the kill gets neither the achievement nor a boss to fight. The Black Knight Titan re-summons via the Titan Seal after 55 seconds in the arena, but the others do not have a documented equivalent.
  3. Every player must discover vaults themselves for them to appear on their own map — so "it's marked" is not useful advice.

The practical pattern for a six-player world is to keep the group loosely synchronised through the four primary quests and let people diverge on side content. Region quest achievements need only three secondary quests per region, which a coordinated evening clears, and the nine Icthlarin reputation tasks split naturally between players.

One last piece of sequencing. Icthlarin's Little Helper hands out a Crucible Engram during the Uzzer clan's Saga of the Adventurer task, and Engrams open the Nightmare Crucible — the only source of power level 7 Ascension Cores. Since Ascension Cores are what let you upgrade a masterwork or vestige weapon to the current top tier instead of replacing it, the campaign's last quest is also the gateway to the entire endgame gear loop. Finish the chain before you start optimising gear.

Practical tips

  • The chain is Dragon Slayer (5th), Withering Heights (6th), Black Knight's Fortress (7th), Icthlarin's Little Helper (8th).
  • Boss power levels run 4, 5, 6, 6 — gear checks, not time checks.
  • Fellhollow needs Dragon Slayer done AND Withering Heights started.
  • Fellhollow access is permanent across all worlds once earned.
  • Emberwood's shrines reset in every new world regardless.
  • The Nightmare Crucible and the magic carpet need only partial Icthlarin completion.
  • The Fight Cave needs the whole quest.
  • The dragon shield line is handed out one rung per quest — do not skip Vertentis Kara.
  • A latecomer must run the chain themselves — region access is per-character.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Four primary quests across five regions is a campaign measured in weeks, and keeping a group roughly in step needs a world that is available whenever any of them are. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' campaign — Kuldra's Saga — runs as four numbered primary quests: Dragon Slayer (5th) against Velgar at power level 4, Withering Heights (6th) against Imaru at 5, Black Knight's Fortress (7th) against the Black Knight Titan at 6, and Icthlarin's Little Helper (8th) against Fuzan at 6 — with Kuldra herself listed at power level 8. Each opens the next region, and the gates are more precise than they look: Fellhollow needs Dragon Slayer completed and Withering Heights started, while the Nightmare Crucible and the magic carpet need only partial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper where the Fight Cave needs all of it. One unlock is permanent across every world you play — Fellhollow access, earned by soul-rifting through the Spectral Door — while world puzzles like Emberwood's four shrines reset on every fresh world. The rewards trace a single line: the Anti-dragon Shield recipe from the Vertentis Kara vault becomes the Dragonblight, then the Dragoncurse, then the Dragonfire, each built from the last plus a Draconic Visage and each better suited to the fight in the quest that follows. On a shared server, remember that quest progress is per-character while boss kills are world state — so a latecomer still has to run the chain, and the whole group should be present for the fights.
