Lighting in Palworld 1.0: Torches, Lamps & Which Ones Need Power

Palworld's lighting splits cleanly in two, and the split is not cosmetic. Torches and fireplaces need a Kindling Pal assigned. Lamps need electricity. Build the wrong one and you get an unlit base either way — a lamp with no generator is as dark as a torch with nobody to light it. Here is every lighting structure, which family it belongs to, and the one that needs neither.
The Kindling Family
| Structure | Tech | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| Mounted Torch | 6 | 5 Wood, 2 Stone |
| Brick Fireplace | 8 | 30 Wood, 15 Stone |
| Fireplace | 8 | 15 Wood, 30 Stone |
| Wall Torch | 14 | 5 Wood, 2 Stone |
| Majestic Wall Torch | — | 5 Wood, 2 Stone, 2 Flame Organ |
| Majestic Candlestick | — | 5 Ingot, 2 Flame Organ |
| Ceremonial Candlestick | — | 5 Ingot, 2 Flame Organ, 2 Charcoal |
The Mounted Torch at Technology 6 for 5 Wood and 2 Stone is the cheapest light in the game, and for the first several hours it is the only one you need.
But it costs you a Pal. Every structure in this family requires a Kindling Pal, and that is the same suitability your Primitive Furnace, Cooking Pot and every furnace above them need. On a small base with one Kindling Pal, lighting the place competes directly with smelting and cooking.
Work priority makes this worse than it sounds. Kindling sits at priority 8 alongside Smelting, above Cooking at 9 — so a single Kindling Pal will tend to the furnace and the torches before it ever cooks. If your food production has stalled on a small base, torches may be part of the reason.
The Electric Family

| Structure | Tech | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| Wall Lamp | 26 | 10 Ingot, 2 Electric Organ, 2 Nail |
| Lamp | 26 | 10 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail, 20 Wood |
| Antique Brown / Red Floor Lamp | 26 | 30 Wood, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail |
| Chandelier | 26 | 20 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail |
| Ceiling Lamp | 27 | 20 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail |
| Simple / Double / Retro / Stylish Street Lamp | 46 | 20 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail |
| Large Mounted Lamp | 46 | 30 Refined Ingot, 5 Circuit Board, 5 Nail, 1 Bio Battery |
| Large Ceiling Lamp | 47 | 30 Refined Ingot, 5 Circuit Board, 5 Nail, 1 Bio Battery |
| Paper Lantern | — | 5 Ingot, 2 Electric Organ |
| Red Wooden Lantern | — | 10 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 10 Stone |
Technology 26 is the transition point — that is where lighting stops needing a Pal and starts needing a generator. Almost everything at that tier costs the same 3 Electric Organ and 3 Nail plus some metal, so pick whichever fits your build visually.
The Wall Lamp is the cheapest electric option at 10 Ingot, 2 Electric Organ and 2 Nail.
Electric Organ is the material to watch. It is a Pal drop, and the reliable sources are the Lux elemental variants plus Electric Pals generally — several drop it at a 100% rate. Beakon drops Electric Organ at 1 – 2 (100%) at every level.
The four street lamps at Technology 46 are identical in cost — 20 Ingot, 3 Electric Organ, 3 Nail — and differ only in appearance. There is no reason to prefer one on mechanical grounds.
The two Bio Battery lamps at Technology 46 – 47 are a different tier, needing 30 Refined Ingot, 5 Circuit Board and 1 Bio Battery each. These are furniture for a finished base rather than functional lighting.
The One That Needs Neither

The Japanese Paper Lantern (Technology 55) costs 10 Hardwood and 3 Flame Organ and is listed as decorative only — no Kindling Pal, no electricity.
That makes it the only lighting structure that costs nothing to run, though it is a Technology 55 unlock and therefore not a solution to any early problem.
For personal lighting, the answer is not a structure at all. The Hip Lantern (Technology 15) — "A lantern that can be attached to the hip. It lights up automatically at night… Just one is enough to find your way in the dark" — costs 20 Ingot, 10 Wood, 10 Flame Organ and 5 Ancient Civilization Parts and occupies no hand slot.
Build it early. It solves night exploration permanently, and its only unusual material is the 5 Ancient Civilization Parts, which come from Alpha Pals at 1 – 8 per kill.
A Practical Lighting Plan

Early — Technology 6 to 25. Build Mounted Torches at 5 Wood and 2 Stone. Accept the Kindling cost, and keep the number low so your Kindling Pal still reaches the furnace and the pot.
Mid — Technology 26. Once you have a Power Generator (Technology 26) running, switch to Wall Lamps and Ceiling Lamps. This is the real upgrade: electric lighting frees your Kindling Pal entirely, which on a small base is worth more than the light itself.
Get the Hip Lantern at Technology 15 regardless of which family you use at base. It is a personal item and unrelated to base lighting.
Late — Technology 46 and up. Street lamps and the Bio Battery lamps are aesthetic. Spend the materials if you enjoy the build; nothing mechanical depends on them.
Two cross-cutting notes. First, Construction is work priority 3, above almost all production — so placing a dozen lamps pulls your whole workforce off the lines. Batch the lighting build into one session. Second, if you are running electric lighting, remember that other structures compete for the same power: the Mounted Missile Launcher draws 1,000 energy per second, and endgame stations including the Ancient Kitchen need electricity to run at all.
Practical tips
- Torches need a Kindling Pal; lamps need electricity. That is the entire decision.
- Mounted Torch (Tech 6) is 5 Wood and 2 Stone — the cheapest light in the game.
- Kindling is work priority 8, above Cooking — too many torches can starve your cooking pot.
- Technology 26 is the switchover. Electric lighting frees your Kindling Pal.
- Wall Lamp is the cheapest electric option at 10 Ingot, 2 Electric Organ, 2 Nail.
- The four street lamps cost exactly the same — choose on looks alone.
- Build the Hip Lantern at Technology 15 for personal light; it needs 5 Ancient Civilization Parts.
Running your own Palworld 1.0 server
Lighting is one of the few base systems that only matters when the world is actually running its day-night cycle — and on a dedicated server that cycle never stops. A gamever Palworld 1.0 server keeps your generators powering the lamps and your Kindling Pals tending the torches around the clock, so the base is lit and working when your group logs in at night. Full crossplay keeps everyone on the same world, and one-click backups protect a build you have furnished.
Conclusion
Palworld's lighting divides into two families with two different costs. Torches and fireplaces need a Kindling Pal — the Mounted Torch at Technology 6 is the cheapest light in the game at 5 Wood and 2 Stone, but every one you build competes with your furnace and cooking pot for the same Pal, and Kindling outranks Cooking in work priority. Lamps need electricity, starting at Technology 26 where the Wall Lamp costs 10 Ingot, 2 Electric Organ and 2 Nail — and switching to electric lighting is really about freeing your Kindling Pal, not about the light. The Japanese Paper Lantern (Tech 55) is the only decorative option needing neither, and for personal use the Hip Lantern at Technology 15 solves night exploration permanently.
