Defending a Valheim Base: The Ward, the Ballista, Traps and Shield Generators

The Ward stops other players opening your chests. It does not stop them destroying your chests. That single distinction catches out almost everyone who builds one and assumes the base is now safe — and it is the reason a Ward is a courtesy fence rather than a security system. This guide covers the four structures that actually defend a Valheim base, with the numbers, and the one that will shoot you in the back by default.

The Ward
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Materials | Finewood ×5, Greydwarf eye ×5, Surtling core ×1 |
| Radius | 32 m |
| Prevents | Other players building, opening doors, opening chests |
| Does not prevent | Destroying your buildings or chests |
| Does not stop | Enemy creatures — at all |
| Does not cover | Carts inside the radius |
Read the third and fourth rows together. A Ward blocks access but not destruction: another player cannot open your chest, but they can break it and take what falls out. It is protection against casual interference, not against someone who means it.
And it does nothing about monsters. A Ward is a multiplayer permission system, not a defence — which is why the rest of this article exists.
Permissions work by handshake: while the Ward is inactive, another player presses E to add themselves to the authorised list, and the owner then reactivates it. To remove someone they must interact again while it is inactive — or the Ward is destroyed, which resets every permission at once.
It also cannot overlap with a Ward you are not authorised on, which is the mechanic that stops a stranger from fencing off your build.
The Ballista

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Materials | Black metal ×10, Yggdrasil wood ×10, Mechanical spring ×3 |
| Range | 28 m in front, within a ±45° arc |
| Ammunition | 40 missiles — Wooden, Black Metal or Flametal |
| Damage | Entirely from the missile loaded |
| Durability | 250 — and it takes rain damage |
Here is the warning that belongs in bold: by default a Ballista shoots any creature in range — including the player character and your tamed animals.
Placing one beside the path you walk every day, or next to your boar pen, is a mistake you make exactly once. The fix is a trophy: load one into the Ballista and it will only target that creature type. Only one trophy can be active at a time, so a Ballista is a specialist, not a general-purpose turret.
Its damage comes entirely from the missile, which means a Ballista is only as good as what you feed it — and it holds 40, so a raid can empty one.
And note the 250 durability plus rain damage. This is a structure that degrades on its own; put a roof over it or expect to repair it constantly.
The Trap

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Materials | Black metal ×5, Bronze nails ×10, Mechanical spring ×1 |
| Damage | 50 Blunt + 50 Pierce |
| Backstab multiplier | 4× |
| Effect | Immobilises 5 seconds — bosses are immune |
| Lifespan | 10 triggers, then it breaks |
| Durability | 300, 31 lost per trigger |
The 5-second immobilisation is worth more than the 100 damage. A held enemy is an enemy you can hit with a backstab, and the trap itself carries a 4× backstab multiplier.
Ten triggers is the real constraint. Traps are consumables with a repair option, not permanent fixtures — and they arm automatically and cannot be manually disarmed once armed, only reset 5 seconds after they fire.
Bosses are immune, so this is anti-raid and anti-mob equipment, not a boss strategy.
The Shield Generator

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Materials | Iron ×5, Copper ×5, Shield core ×1 |
| Radius | 30 m, spherical |
| Blocks | Cinder rain, projectiles and missiles, lava balls, ranged attacks from players and creatures |
| Fuel | 10 bone fragments or charred bone |
| Consumption | 1 fuel per 500 damage absorbed |
| Durability | 1,500 |
This is the one genuinely mandatory defensive structure in the game, because cinder rain in the Ashlands destroys buildings and nothing else stops it.
Note that it is spherical, not a dome — 30 metres in every direction, so it covers what is above your base as well as around it, which is what makes it work against falling cinders and lava balls.
The fuel maths is generous. One fuel unit per 500 damage absorbed, with a capacity of 10 — so a full load absorbs 5,000 damage before it runs dry. It is not something you refill every session.
How to Actually Defend a Base
- Do not rely on a Ward for security. It blocks access, not destruction, and does nothing to creatures.
- Put a trophy in every Ballista before you walk past it. By default it shoots you.
- Roof your Ballistas — 250 durability and rain damage means an exposed one decays.
- Use Traps for the immobilise, not the 100 damage, and expect 10 triggers each.
- Build a Shield Generator before anything else in the Ashlands. Cinder rain has no other counter.
- Build in stone — 1,500 durability against wood's 400.
Practical tips
- The Ward prevents opening, not destroying. It is a courtesy fence, not a vault.
- The Ballista shoots the player and tamed animals by default. Load a trophy.
- Only one trophy is active at a time, so each Ballista covers one enemy type.
- Traps immobilise for 5 seconds and carry a 4× backstab — bosses are immune.
- Shield Generator: 30 m sphere, 1 fuel per 500 damage, 10 capacity = 5,000 damage absorbed.
- Destroying a Ward resets every permission on it.
Running your own Valheim server
Base defence only matters when the world keeps running while you are not in it — raids fire on a timer, cinder rain falls regardless, and a Ward's permissions govern people who log in when you are asleep. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world live for up to 10 players, so a defended base stays defended between sessions. One-click backups protect a build that took real hours, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
Four structures defend a Valheim base, and they do different jobs. The Ward (Finewood ×5, Greydwarf eye ×5, Surtling core ×1) covers 32 m and stops other players building, opening doors and opening chests — but not destroying them, and it does nothing to creatures. The Ballista reaches 28 m in a ±45° arc, holds 40 missiles, and shoots the player and tamed animals by default until you load a trophy to restrict it. The Trap deals 50 Blunt + 50 Pierce with a 4× backstab, immobilises for 5 seconds, and breaks after 10 triggers. And the Shield Generator — 30 m spherical, 1 fuel per 500 damage, 1,500 durability — is the only thing in the game that stops Ashlands cinder rain, which makes it the one genuinely mandatory defence.
