The Ashlands in Valheim: Boiling Water, Cinder Rain and Flametal

The water around the Ashlands is boiling, and it destroys every wooden ship in the game. Your Longship — 1,000 health, eighteen cargo slots, the vessel that has carried you through the entire save — does not survive the crossing. Only the Drakkar does, and the Drakkar requires beating The Queen first. That makes the Mistlands a hard gate on the Ashlands, and it is the single thing to understand before you plan a trip.

Getting There Is the First Problem
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| The surrounding water | Boiling |
| What it destroys | All wooden ships |
| What survives | Only the Drakkar |
| Which requires | Defeating The Queen |
Do not attempt the crossing in a Longship. It is not a matter of taking damage and repairing — the biome's approach is designed to end wooden vessels.
This is a cleaner progression gate than any of the boss keys. The Swamp Key and the Wishbone can technically be skipped by a determined player; the Ashlands cannot be reached at all without finishing the Mistlands.
What Lives There

Hostile:
- Charred Warrior, Charred Marksman, Charred Warlock and Charred Twitcher — a full four-role faction rather than a single enemy type.
- Morgen and Bonemaw.
- Volture, Skugg, Lava Blob and Fallen Valkyrie.
- Asksvin — hostile in the wild, and tameable, which makes it the only Ashlands creature you can bring home.
Neutral: Ashlands Dvergr, who attack only when provoked — the same arrangement as their Mistlands cousins.
Passive: Ash crow, Magmafish.
Bosses: Fader, plus Lord Reto as a miniboss.
The Charred faction is what makes this biome feel different. A marksman, a warlock and two melee roles arriving together is a small army, not an encounter — and it is why the Ashlands punishes solo play more than any previous biome.
Cinder Rain Destroys Buildings

Cinder rain occurs in the Ashlands, and it destroys structures outright. This is not weather that inconveniences you — it is weather that deletes what you build.
Shield Generators are the protection, and they are not optional for a permanent base here.
Fire also spreads rapidly between wooden structures, which compounds the problem: one ignition point can take an entire wooden camp. The answer is Grausten, the stone quarried locally — build in it rather than in wood, and the fire problem largely disappears.
Plan a base here as a project, not a camp. Between the Shield Generator, the Grausten and the Charred patrols, an Ashlands foothold takes a session of its own — which is the argument for establishing it before you need it rather than during a Fader attempt.
What You Are Here For

| Source | Materials |
|---|---|
| Terrain | Ashwood, Flametal Ore, Grausten, Charcoal Resin, Sulfur, Proustite Powder, Bone Fragments, Volture Eggs, Fiddlehead, Smoke Puff, Vineberry Cluster |
| Charred Fortress | Bell Fragments, Molten Core, Flametal Ore, Iolite, Jade, Bloodstone, Charred Cogwheel |
| Putrid Hole | Silver Necklace, Carapace Arrows, Asksvin skeletal parts, Entrails, Rotten Meat |
| Creatures | Morgen Sinew and Heart, Asksvin Bladder/Hide/Tail, Bonemaw Tooth, Celestial Feathers, Charred Bones, Coins |
Flametal Ore is the final armour tier at 38 – 44 armour per piece — and unusually, the Flametal set carries no movement speed penalty and halves frost damage, which no other endgame set does.
Bell Fragments are the progression item. You need 9 fragments to craft the 3 Bells that summon Fader, at 3 fragments per Bell at the Black Forge. They come from the Charred Fortress, so clearing one is mandatory rather than optional.
Charred Arrows at 82 Pierce are the strongest plain arrow in the game, and the biome supplies the materials for them.
And the Ashlands is where you tame an Asksvin — the only rideable creature from this tier.
How to Approach the Ashlands
- Beat The Queen and build a Drakkar. There is no other way across.
- Bring the best armour you have — Carapace at minimum, Flametal once you can craft it.
- Build in Grausten, never wood. Fire spreads between wooden structures.
- Put up a Shield Generator before you build anything you care about.
- Expect groups, not individuals — the Charred arrive as a four-role faction.
- Clear a Charred Fortress for the 9 Bell Fragments that Fader needs.
- Do not bring fire damage — Fader is immune to it, and so is much of the biome's theme.
Practical tips
- Boiling water destroys all wooden ships. Only the Drakkar crosses.
- Cinder rain destroys structures — a Shield Generator is mandatory for a base.
- Build in Grausten. Fire spreads rapidly between wooden buildings.
- 9 Bell Fragments = 3 Bells at the Black Forge, and that is how you summon Fader.
- Flametal is the only endgame set with no speed penalty, and it halves frost.
- Asksvin is tameable — the one thing here you can take home alive.
Running your own Valheim server
An Ashlands base is a group build — Grausten walls, a Shield Generator and a Black Forge, assembled while Charred patrols object. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world live for up to 10 players, so the foothold survives between sessions and the cinder rain does not catch an unprotected build while nobody is logged in. One-click backups protect a base at the end of the progression, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
The Ashlands begins with a logistics problem rather than a combat one: the surrounding water is boiling and destroys every wooden ship, so only a Drakkar — and therefore only a player who has beaten The Queen — can reach it. Once there, cinder rain destroys structures and fire spreads between wooden buildings, which makes a Shield Generator and Grausten construction the price of a permanent base. The hostile roster is the densest in the game, led by the four-role Charred faction, with Fader as the boss and Lord Reto as a miniboss. You are there for Flametal Ore — the final armour tier at 38 – 44 per piece, uniquely with no speed penalty and 0.5× frost damage — for Charred Arrows at 82 Pierce, and above all for the 9 Bell Fragments from a Charred Fortress that become the three Bells summoning Fader.
