Cooking Stations in Valheim: Two Tiers, and a Stacking Trick Worth 43%

A Valheim kitchen with cooking stations over a fire.

The Valheim Cooking Station costs two wood, has 20 durability — the flimsiest structure in the game — and cannot function at all without a fire beneath it. It is also the site of the single best base-building trick most players never learn: you can stack seven cooking stations over one campfire, or ten if you place them halfway inside it.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

Twenty durability is the lowest of any station in the game. For comparison, a Workbench is far tougher and a Hearth is 1,500. A cooking station is effectively disposable — which is fine at two wood, but worth knowing before you build a kitchen somewhere a raid can reach.

The fire requirement is specific. Not any heat source: a Campfire, a Hearth or a Hanging brazier. A station without one of those underneath will accept meat and never cook it, which is the single most common "my cooking station is broken" report.

    Cook times are almost uniform:

IngredientTime
Neck tail, Boar, Deer, Bear, Raw fish, Wolf, Chicken meat25 seconds
Hare meat60 seconds

Hare meat is the outlier at 60 seconds — more than twice everything else. If a batch seems to be taking too long, check whether there is hare on the grill.

And leave anything on too long and it becomes Coal. That is not a failure state to avoid at all costs — it is a legitimate, if wasteful, coal source — but it means an unattended station converts your food into fuel.

The Stacking Trick

You can place seven cooking stations in a row over a single campfire. That alone is more than most players build.

Place them halfway inside the campfire instead and the number rises to ten. Same fire, same fuel, three more stations — a 43% increase in throughput for nothing but placement care.

The reason to care is batch cooking. Cooked meat is the input to almost every Cauldron recipe, and a ten-station rig turns a hunting trip's worth of raw meat into finished ingredients in two 25-second passes rather than five.

It costs twenty wood. Ten stations at two wood each is the cheapest capacity upgrade in Valheim by a wide margin.

Build it over a Hearth rather than a Campfire if the kitchen is permanent. The Hearth's 1,500 durability against a Campfire's 100 means the fire underneath your kitchen stops being the fragile part — and it contributes Comfort 2 instead of 1, as covered in our fire sources guide.

And vent the smoke. Ten stations over one fire is a lot of smoke in one room, and Smoked deals 2 damage per second with no audio warning.

The Iron Cooking Station

The Iron Cooking Station is not faster — it is broader. Its purpose is unlocking the meats the wooden station cannot handle: Lox, Serpent, Seeker and Bonemaw. If you have Lox meat sitting in a chest with nowhere to cook it, this is the missing station.

Chain ×3 is the real cost. Chains cannot be crafted at all — they are a drop or loot item only, from Wraiths, Sunken Crypt chests, Swamp Chests and Sealed Towers. That puts the Iron Cooking Station behind Swamp content rather than merely behind iron.

There is an easier route most players miss. Chains can also be obtained by deconstructing the hook-and-chain decorations in Dvergr Harbors and Dvergr Excavation Sites in the Mistlands — no Wraith hunting required, just a hammer and somewhere to stand.

Its 500 durability is twenty-five times the wooden station's 20, and it is immune to Fire, Poison and Spirit — a station you can build inside a Hearth room without worrying about it.

It still needs a fire underneath, so the stacking logic applies here too, and a mixed kitchen of wooden and iron stations over one Hearth handles every ingredient in the game.

Practical tips

  • Wooden station: Wood ×2, durability 20 — the flimsiest structure in the game.
  • It needs a Campfire, Hearth or Hanging brazier underneath — nothing else works.
  • Most meats cook in 25 seconds; Hare meat takes 60.
  • Overcooking produces Coal, so an unattended station burns your food into fuel.
  • Seven stations stack over one campfire — ten if placed halfway inside it.
  • That is a 43% throughput increase for twenty wood.
  • Iron Cooking Station: Chain ×3, Iron ×3, durability 500.
  • It unlocks Lox, Serpent, Seeker and Bonemaw meat — and Chains gate it behind the Swamp.

Running your own Valheim server

A ten-station kitchen over a Hearth is base infrastructure that pays off across many sessions rather than one. A gamever Valheim server keeps that hall standing for up to 10 players, with one-click backups so a kitchen that took an afternoon to lay out is never rebuilt from scratch.

Conclusion

Valheim's wooden Cooking Station costs Wood ×2, carries just 20 durability, and does nothing without a Campfire, Hearth or Hanging brazier underneath — the most common reason one appears broken. Most meats cook in 25 seconds, with Hare meat the outlier at 60, and anything left too long becomes Coal. The trick worth building around is the stacking: seven stations fit over one campfire, and ten if you place them halfway inside it — a 43% increase in throughput for twenty wood. Build over a Hearth rather than a Campfire for a permanent kitchen (1,500 durability against 100, and Comfort 2 instead of 1), and vent the smoke, because ten fires in one room is 2 damage a second with no warning. The Iron Cooking Station (Chain ×3, Iron ×3, durability 500) is not faster but broader, unlocking Lox, Serpent, Seeker and Bonemaw meat — and its Chains put it behind the Swamp.
