Whetstone and Magical Focus in Dragonwilds: The Same 15%, for Two Schools

A blacksmith's workshop in Dragonwilds.

Dragonwilds has two consumables that do exactly the same thing for different builds. A Whetstone hones your melee weapon for +15% damage. A Magical Focus imbues your staff for +15% damage. Both last ten minutes, both come off the Blacksmith's Bench, and both unlock at almost the same skill level. Neither is mentioned in most build guides, and together they are the cheapest damage increase in the game.

Two Items, One Effect

The symmetry is exact, down to the weight and the stack limit. Jagex built one mechanic and gave each combat school its own version — which is why a melee player and a caster can follow identical habits here.

Note that Ranged has no equivalent. Whetstone and Magical Focus cover Attack and Magic; a bow user's damage boost comes from arrow variants instead. If you are switching to ranged and wondering where your honing item went, there is not one.

The unlock levels are one apartAttack 40 and Magic 39 — which in practice means both arrive around the same point in a combat build's progression.

Ten minutes is a long buff by Dragonwilds standards. It matches a Lesser Focused potion's 600 seconds and doubles a Cooling infusion's base duration, which makes it easy to line up with a full pre-fight stack.

What They Cost

The Whetstone is close to free. Granite ×5 and Stone ×10 — both common mining materials, both from nodes that respawn in two days. As our mining node guide covers, Granite sits at 140 health and Stone Boulders at 75, so a single circuit produces enough for a large batch.

The Magical Focus is gated by one ingredient. Wild Anima ×1 is the constraint — the Stone ×10 half is trivial. That makes the caster version somewhat harder to mass-produce than the melee one, despite the identical effect.

Both are Artisan crafts at the same bench, which means one Blacksmith's Bench serves both builds — useful for a group base where the melee and magic players are not going to want separate stations.

Stacking to 50 at 5.0 weight each is the practical limit. A full stack is 250 weight, which nobody is carrying — make ten or twenty and leave the rest in a chest, since a ten-minute buff means you are using roughly one every fight.

They Stack With Spells

Card explaining how Whetstone and Magical Focus stack with other buffs.

Neither of these is your only damage buff — they are meant to be layered.

A Whetstone stacks with damage-boosting spells. The wiki names the example directly: it "can be used in conjunction with damage-boosting spells, such as Enchant Weapon: Fire." So a melee weapon can be honed and enchanted at the same time, running both multipliers.

That combination is also a Steam achievement. As covered in our achievements guide, Sharp and Shiny asks you to "have both your weapon enchanted with magic and honed with a whetstone" — which is the game telling you the stack is intended.

A Magical Focus stacks with a lesser Magic potion, and the combination adds something the Focus alone does not: the wiki notes it leaves your staff with a 25% increased chance of a critical hit on top of the damage multiplier. That is a different axis entirely — damage per hit from the Focus, crit frequency from the potion.

So the full pre-fight sequence for each build:

  • Melee — hone with a Whetstone, cast Enchant Weapon, drink a Focused Attack potion, eat, then engage.
  • Magic — imbue with a Magical Focus, drink a lesser Magic potion for the crit chance, eat, then engage.

And do it in that order, at the destination. All of these are timed, and the same travel rule applies as with experience potions: arrive first, buff second. Ten minutes spent walking is ten minutes of a fifteen percent multiplier you did not use.

Practical tips

  • Whetstone: +15% melee damage for 10 minutes, unlocked at Attack 40.
  • Magical Focus: +15% staff damage for 10 minutes, unlocked at Magic 39.
  • Both from the Blacksmith's Bench — one bench covers both builds.
  • Whetstone is Granite ×5 + Stone ×10 — effectively free.
  • Magical Focus needs Wild Anima ×1 — the only real constraint.
  • A whetstone stacks with Enchant Weapon: Fire — and that pair is a Steam achievement.
  • A Magical Focus plus a lesser Magic potion adds +25% critical hit chance.
  • Ranged has no equivalent item — arrow variants fill that role instead.

Running your own Dragonwilds server

A ten-minute buff is a group-coordination problem: everyone hones and imbues at the same moment or half the party fights unbuffed. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps the world live around the clock with automatic updates and one-click backups, so an expedition starts when the group is ready rather than when the last person finishes loading.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds gives melee and magic the same tool under two names. A Whetstone hones your equipped melee weapon for a 15% damage multiplier over 10 minutes, unlocked at Attack 40 and made from Granite ×5 and Stone ×10. A Magical Focus imbues your equipped staff for the same 15% over the same 10 minutes, unlocked at Magic 39 and made from Wild Anima ×1 and Stone ×10. Both come off the Blacksmith's Bench, both weigh 5.0 and stack to 50, and Ranged has no equivalent at all. The part most builds miss is that neither is meant to stand alone: a whetstone stacks with Enchant Weapon: Fire — a pairing the game rewards with the Sharp and Shiny achievement — and a Magical Focus stacks with a lesser Magic potion to add +25% critical hit chance alongside the damage. Buff at the destination, not on the road.
