The Ashenfall Progression Route: Every Region, Boss & Gear Tier in Order

Card showing the Dragonwilds region progression from Brynmoor to Umbral Sands.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds does not hand you a route map. Regions unlock in order, most of them behind a boss, and each brings its own gear tier, its own environmental hazard and its own reason to go. If your group is deciding where to head next — or starting fresh and wondering how far the game actually goes — this is the whole ladder as Jagex have documented it.

The Region Order

2Ghornfell— starting area
3FellhollowDragon Slayer quest, then the Wise Old ManWither Rot
4Dowdun ReachDefeat ImaruDense fortress interior

Brynmoor and Ghornfell are the starting pair, and Jagex treat them as one block — a 0.12.1 visual pass covered "the starting areas (Brynmoor and Ghornfell)" together.

Fellhollow is north of Ghornfell and was the game's first Major Update — "a hauntingly beautiful realm, enlisted in the service of Death, himself."

Dowdun Reach is a change of shape rather than scale. Where the others are open regions, this is "a vast, interconnected fortress" built from feedback wanting "more interiors… a more densely packed area with hidden paths, secrets and side quests."

Umbral Sands is the largest region in the game — Jagex called it "Ashenfall's largest region to date."

The Bosses

Velgar is the fight people use as a yardstick. When Jagex explained the Ranged rebalance, the tell was that "by late Ghornfell, players were crushing bosses like Velgar in record time using Ranged Weapons." If Velgar dies very fast, your build is ahead of the curve.

Imaru's arena has a documented quirk worth knowing: Jagex "fixed an issue where graves could get stuck in the doorway to Imaru's arena before breaking the seals" — and noted it applied to some vaults too. If a corpse run has gone wrong at a sealed door, that was a known bug.

Fuzan does not respect the clock. With Red Lesser Dragons going to ground at night, "Fuzan attacks from on high — no time of day is safe here."

Two optional challenges sit above the region bosses, both in Umbral Sands:

  • The Fight Cave — wave-based, ending with Fuzan, and repeatable for rare materials. There is a cape.
  • The Nightmare Crucible — opened with Engrams found around Umbral Sands, a boss-rush against "the biggest and baddest monsters Ashenfall can throw at you". It rewards Ascension Cores, and is the only source of PL7 Cores.

Gear Tiers and Power Levels

Card showing Dragonwilds' gear tiers and Power Level progression.

Dragonwilds tracks gear two ways at once, which confuses people: material tiers (Tier 3, Tier 5…) and Power Levels (PL3, PL5, PL7).

    Material tiers come with regions:

TierMeleeRangedMagic
Tier 5 (Fellhollow)Steel ArmourGreen DragonhideSplitbark
Umbral SandsAdamant ArmourRed DragonhideInfinity Robes

One line per combat style at every tier — a RuneScape convention the game follows closely, and the reason all three styles share a single Armour Bench.

    Power Levels track weapons:

  • PL3 — the Crystal Bow sits here, alongside other PL3 bows.
  • PL5"Power Level 5 bows are out there in Fellhollow if you want to ramp up and deal even more damage!"
  • PL7 — the top documented tier. PL7 Cores come only from the Nightmare Crucible.

A trap worth repeating: PL7 Shards do not exist. Jagex confirmed the recipe to convert them is in the Mystic Forge by mistake and "will be removing the recipe with our 1.0 update." Do not go hunting for shards that were never implemented.

And gear can be upgraded rather than replaced. The Ascension Cores feature at the Mystic Forge lets you "upgrade Masterwork and Vestige weapons to higher tiers" — so a weapon you like need not be discarded at the next region.

Planning the Route With a Group

Card giving practical advice for progressing through Ashenfall as a group.

Every region past the starting pair charges an environmental cost, and the counter is positional rather than consumable — which is the pattern worth internalising:

RegionHazardCounter
FellhollowWither Rot → Withered → Soul RiftingCleansing pools inside the region
Umbral SandsScorch from prolonged sunShade, shelter, dawn and dusk travel
Umbral SandsQuicksandRoute around or over it

So preparation is largely about knowledge, not gear. Scouting cleansing pool locations before you need one is worth more than another armour tier.

Three things that smooth the whole route:

  • Level Agility. It levels passively while you run, cuts sprint stamina, and raises carry weight at levels 50 and 75 — which is what turns a long expedition into one trip instead of three.
  • Keep a food supply. Since the health rework removed healing potions, food is your healing, and fish are best in class.
  • Do Animal Magnetism early if anyone plays Ranged — the Arrow Grabba recovers spent arrows.

And no XP is wasted while you wait. Jagex raised all skill caps to 99 "even though the skills aren't finished yet", and promised that content backfills into levels you already hold: "If you've already reached the required levels, these will automatically unlock as we add the content in."

Between regions there is real content. Minor updates arrive roughly monthly from a dedicated Quests and Activities team, adding quests, Buried Treasure, Spectral Birds, Statues of Saradomin and more — enough that a group "gearing up for the next fight" is not idle.

Practical tips

  • Order: Brynmoor → Ghornfell → Fellhollow → Dowdun Reach → Umbral Sands.
  • Fellhollow needs the Dragon Slayer quest; Dowdun Reach needs Imaru; Umbral Sands needs the Black Knight Titan.
  • Velgar is the build benchmark — if he dies fast, you are ahead of the curve.
  • Tier 5 is Steel / Green Dragonhide / Splitbark; Umbral Sands adds Adamant / Red Dragonhide / Infinity Robes.
  • PL7 Cores come only from the Nightmare Crucible. PL7 Shards do not exist.
  • Ascension Cores upgrade weapons rather than replacing them.
  • Scout cleansing pools and shade routes — regional hazards are beaten by knowledge, not gear.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

A five-region route is a long campaign, and long campaigns are where a persistent world beats a host-and-play session: the group progresses on its own schedule, scouting knowledge accumulates in one shared map rather than five, and nobody waits for a specific person to be online. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, applies updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before big changes.

Conclusion

Ashenfall runs Brynmoor → Ghornfell → Fellhollow → Dowdun Reach → Umbral Sands, with the starting pair open and each later region gated: Fellhollow behind the Dragon Slayer quest and the Wise Old Man, Dowdun Reach behind Imaru, and Umbral Sands behind the Black Knight Titan. Gear tracks two ways — material tiers giving one armour line per combat style (Steel / Green Dragonhide / Splitbark at Tier 5, Adamant / Red Dragonhide / Infinity Robes in the desert) and Power Levels running to PL7, whose Cores come only from the Nightmare Crucible. Above the region bosses sit the repeatable Fight Cave and the key-gated Nightmare Crucible, and beyond them Kuldra. Prepare with knowledge as much as gear — cleansing pools in Fellhollow, shade routes in the desert — and remember that no XP is wasted, because content backfills into levels you already hold.
