How to Get Leather in Palworld 1.0 (& What It's For)

Leather is the first crafting material most Palworld players run short of, and the last one they think about. It is in every armor set from the starting Pelt Armor through Pal Metal, it feeds High Quality Cloth, and it appears in accessory recipes at forty units a time. The good news is that over 80 Pals drop it, most at a 100% rate — so this is a farming-route problem, not a scarcity problem.

What Is Leather?

Leather is a Common-rarity material with a weight of 2, stackable to 9,999, and a sell value of 200 Gold Coins.

Its description is characteristically blunt: "Leather taken from a Pal, it serves as a defensive material."

The Best Leather Farms

Over 80 Pals drop Leather, but the yields differ enormously. These are the ones worth building a route around:

Pal Leather per kill Rate
Mammorest / Mammorest Cryst 5 – 10 100%
Fenglope / Fenglope Lux 3 100%
Kitsun 2 – 3 100%
Grizzbolt 2 – 3 100%
Eikthyrdeer variants 2 – 3 100%
Melpaca 1 100%

Mammorest at 5 – 10 per kill is far and away the best source in the game. Nothing else comes close, and the 100% rate means no variance to plan around. If you need leather in bulk — and a single Islander's Tool Belt wants 40 — Mammorest is the answer.

Higher-level versions (Level 70 and 80) of many of these Pals drop leather at the same consistent rates, so you do not need to seek out a particular population.

Leather from the 1.0 Roster

Twenty-one of the Pals added in Palworld 1.0 list Leather in their drop tables, which means almost any farming loop you are already running restocks it as a side effect:

Renjishi, Shaolong, Eidrolon, Moldron, Moldron Cryst, Celesdir Noct, Majex, Sekhmet, Leafan, Gildra, Loomen, Roujay, Snugloo, Lapure, Elgrove, Elgrove Cryst, Lapiron, Valentail, Wispaw, Starryon Primo, Univolt Cryst.

Two are worth singling out:

  • Majex drops 2 – 3 Leather at 100% alongside Flame Organ at 100%, and its volcano sanctuary population sits at only Level 35 – 38.
  • Polapup Terra drops Leather and Aquatic Pal Fluids both at 100%, at Level 55 – 60 in the desert island region.

Other Sources

If fighting is not the plan:

  • Wandering merchants across multiple locations stock it.
  • Treasure boxes from expeditions and environmental spawns.
  • Mission rewards, including "First Boss Battle".

At only 200 Gold Coins a piece, buying leather is cheap relative to almost anything else in the game.

What It Builds

Leather runs through the whole armor progression:

Category Examples
Early armor Pelt Armor and its Heat-Resistant and Cold-Resistant variants
Mid armor Metal Armor, Refined Metal Armor and specialised versions
Late armor Pal Metal Armor
Accessories Tricorne, Feathered Hair Band, Islander's Tool Belt (x40)
Intermediate materials High Quality Cloth — x1 per cloth

That last line matters more than it looks. High Quality Cloth gates every good armor set in the game and needs 1 Leather each — so leather is a dependency of a dependency. It is rarely the visible bottleneck, but it is always in the chain.

Practical tips

  • Mammorest at 5 – 10 per kill is the best leather farm in the game by a wide margin. Build a route around it.
  • Every source listed here drops at 100% — leather is a route problem, not a luck problem.
  • 21 of the 1.0 Pals drop it, so your existing Alpha loops already restock it.
  • At 200 Gold Coins, buying from a wandering merchant is often faster than a dedicated hunt.
  • Remember it feeds High Quality Cloth, which feeds High Quality Wooden Board — leather shortages surface two steps later.

Running your own Palworld 1.0 server

Leather is the kind of material you accumulate steadily rather than farm in one sitting, which only works if your world and storage persist between sessions. On a dedicated Palworld 1.0 server your base and chests are always there, your production keeps running while you are offline, and full crossplay lets a group pool what they gather. One-click backups and automatic updates keep it all safe through every patch.

Conclusion

Leather is dropped by over 80 Pals, essentially all at a 100% rate, so the only question is which route is fastest — and the answer is Mammorest at 5 – 10 per kill. Among Palworld 1.0's roster, 21 Pals drop it, with Majex (2 – 3 at 100%, from Level 35) the most convenient. It builds every armor set from Pelt through Pal Metal, the Islander's Tool Belt (x40), and — most importantly — High Quality Cloth, which gates the entire high-tier armor tree. At 200 Gold Coins it is also cheap to simply buy.
