How to get enzymes in Icarus

Enzymes are an essential resource in Icarus, used primarily to fuel the localized terraforming device to regrow trees. You can obtain two main types of enzymes in the game: Condensed Enzymes and Synthetic Enzymes. Both serve the same function, but they come from very different sources.

What Are Enzymes Used For?

Enzymes are crucial in Icarus, especially since the Localized Terraforming Device was introduced. This device allows players to regrow trees in deforested areas, restoring forests near bases or logging sites. While condensed and synthetic enzymes work as fuel, they have different efficiency levels and acquisition methods. Condensed Enzymes are more powerful but require a more challenging farming process, whereas Synthetic Enzymes can be crafted more easily but require more units to fuel the device effectively.

How to Get Condensed Enzymes

Condensed Enzymes are the high-tier fuel for the Localized Terraforming Device and are obtained through Enzyme Geysers scattered across Icarus. These geysers release a vapor that can be collected using a Vapor Condenser. To begin harvesting Condensed Enzymes, find an Enzyme Geyser and place a Vapor Condenser on top.

Visit multiple geysers to farm more Condensed Enzymes efficiently.

The Vapor Condenser, however, is not a simple plug-and-play device. Activating it triggers a Horde Mode event, during which waves of aggressive creatures attempt to destroy it. Surviving these waves is key to collecting rewards.

Using the Vapor Condenser

The Vapor Condenser is a deployable device crafted at the Fabricator, requiring composites, glass, electronics, steel screws, and copper wire. Once placed on a geyser and activated, the device will start extracting enzymes while attracting waves of creatures. Successfully defending the condenser for three waves will reward you with Exotics for the first three completions and Condensed Enzymes for all subsequent activations. The number of enzymes received depends on the difficulty level, with more challenging settings granting more rewards.

Enzyme Geysers can be found across Olympus, Styx, Prometheus, and Outpost maps. The best strategy for farming Condensed Enzymes is to locate a geyser in an open area where you have space to maneuver and defend against incoming threats. Building defensive structures around the Vapor Condenser can help protect it, allowing you to focus on eliminating creatures without worrying about the condenser being destroyed.

How to Craft Synthetic Enzymes

If farming Condensed Enzymes sounds too time-consuming, crafting Synthetic Enzymes at the Chemistry Bench is an alternative method. While these enzymes are less efficient than their condensed counterparts, they can be mass-produced with the right materials.

First, unlock it at Tier 4 of your Tech Tree. Then, you can craft it at the Chemistry Bench.

Use the Chemistry Bench to craft Synthetic Enzymes as an alternative.

You will need organic resin, spoiled meat, and charcoal to craft Synthetic Enzymes. Alternative recipes use honeycomb, spoiled plants, seed oil, and other organic materials. Once crafted, Synthetic Enzymes can be used the same way as Condensed Enzymes, though they require a higher quantity to achieve the same effect.

Which Enzyme Should You Use?

The choice between Condensed Enzymes and Synthetic Enzymes depends on your playstyle and available resources. Condensed Enzymes are more powerful and last longer, but acquiring them requires defending a Vapor Condenser and dealing with Horde Mode events. On the other hand, synthetic enzymes are much easier to obtain but require a significantly higher amount to effectively fuel the Localized Terraforming Device. Condensed Enzymes are the better choice if you can access geysers and handle combat. If you prefer crafting and resource gathering, Synthetic Enzymes are the way to go.

Consider setting up multiple Vapor Condensers at different geysers to maximize your enzyme collection. This allows you to farm Condensed Enzymes more efficiently without waiting for cooldowns. If using Synthetic Enzymes, ensure you have a steady supply of organic resin and spoiled meat by maintaining farms or collecting resources in bulk. A Chemistry Bench with the necessary materials will allow you to craft enzymes on demand.

Enzymes are a vital resource in Icarus, allowing players to bring forests back to life and maintain a sustainable wood supply. By understanding how to acquire and use these resources effectively, you can make the most of this new system and keep your world lush and green.
