Beds in Valheim: Eight Wood, and Building One Is Not Enough

 

    A Valheim bed costs eight wood — less than a cooking station row, less than a chest — and it decides where you respawn after every death for the rest of the save. The step players miss is that building a bed does nothing on its own. You have to claim it, and a claimed bed belongs to one player. In a shared house, that means one bed each.

    Eight wood is nothing. For comparison, a cooking station is two wood and a Hoe is five wood and two stone — a bed is in the same bracket as the most disposable items in the game, and it is the one that determines your respawn.

 

    Which makes the cost-benefit absurd. For eight wood you convert a death from "walk back across three biomes" into "walk back from the next room."

 

    Sleeping grants Rested, which as our status effects guide covers is +50% health regeneration, +100% stamina, +50% XP gain and +100% Eitr regeneration — the strongest buff you can carry out of a building.

 

    And it skips the night, which is nine of every thirty minutes on Valheim's day-night cycle.

 

Claiming Is a Separate Action

 

 

    A built bed is furniture. A claimed bed is a spawn point. They are two different states, and the game does not make the distinction obvious.

 

    Claiming has a build requirement of its own. The wiki states that a bed can be claimed when it has a roof and 80% cover, and that you claim it by pressing [E] while looking directly at it. A bed standing in the open cannot be claimed at all — which is the actual reason most failed claims fail.

 

    Once claimed, the claim holds. Other players cannot override it unless the bed is destroyed.

 

    A claimed bed is personal to one player. It is not a shared respawn — which means a four-player group in one longhouse needs four beds, not one. Building a single grand bed and expecting everyone to use it does not work.

 

    Claim on arrival, not when you need it. The moment you want a spawn point is the moment you are about to die, and that is exactly when you will not have time to interact with furniture. Make claiming part of arriving at a new outpost.

 

    And re-claim after building a new one. Your spawn stays with the last bed you claimed, so a new bed in a better location does nothing until you actively claim it — a common way to die and reappear somewhere you have moved on from.

 

    Sleeping has its own separate set of conditions — night, shelter, no enemies nearby, and everyone sleeping together in multiplayer — which our sleeping guide covers in full. Claiming and sleeping are different mechanics with different requirements.

 

Where to Put One

 

 

    Build a bed at every outpost. At eight wood there is no reason not to — a mining camp, a Swamp landing, a Mountain shelter and a Plains forward base should all have one, even if you only sleep in one of them.

 

    Then claim the one nearest whatever you are about to attempt. Heading into a Sunken Crypt cluster? Claim the Swamp bed first. A death then costs you a short walk instead of a Longship voyage.

 

    That matters most where the terrain is hostile. As our status effects guide notes, the Corpse run effect gives you 0.25× physical damage taken, +5 health per second and +150 carry weight for 50 seconds — a genuinely powerful state, but only useful if your grave is reachable within that window.

 

    And keep the home bed claimed by someone. In a group, having every player claim a forward bed at once leaves nobody spawning at base — which is fine until the forward base is overrun and the whole party respawns into the same fight.

 

    Beds also contribute comfort. They count toward the comfort total that sets how long your Rested buff lasts — so the bed in your main hall is doing two jobs, and the ones at outposts only one.

• Building it does nothing. You must CLAIM it to set your spawn.
• A claimed bed is personal — a four-player house needs four beds.
