Valheim Comfort: Every Item Value, and Why Your Second Chair Does Nothing

Comfort caps at 17, and every point is a minute of Rested. Two seasonal items push it to 19. What stops most players reaching the cap is not a lack of furniture but the stacking rule — within a category only the highest-value item counts, so a room with four chairs is worth exactly one chair. Here is every comfort value in the game and how to reach 17 with one item per category.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.
The Comfort Ceiling
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Standard maximum | 17 comfort → 24 minutes of Rested |
| With a Maypole | 18 |
| With a Yule Tree | 19 → 26 minutes |
| Formula | 7 minutes base, +1 minute per comfort level |
So comfort level 1 already gives 8 minutes, and each point after that is another minute, straight through to 24 at the cap.
Comfort changes duration only. It does not make Rested's bonuses stronger — those are fixed at +100% stamina regeneration, +100% Eitr regeneration, +50% health regeneration and +50% skill experience regardless of how comfortable your hall is. Furniture buys you minutes in the field, nothing else.
The two seasonal items are worth noting because they are the only way past 17: the Maypole and the Yule Tree each add a point, and both appear only at their respective times of year.
What Each Item Is Worth

| Item | Comfort |
|---|---|
| Any throne | 3 |
| Hearth | 2 |
| Dragon bed | 2 |
| Heated hot tub | 2 |
| Round or long heavy table | 2 |
| Basic chairs | 1 – 2 |
| Campfire, bonfire, brazier | 1 |
| Standard table | 1 |
| Standard bed | 1 |
| Any rug | 1 |
| Any banner | 1 |
| Lava Lantern | 1 |
| Armor Stand | 1 |
| Maypole / Yule Tree | 1 each |
A throne at 3 is the single most valuable comfort item in the game, and it is worth building the Stonecutter for on that basis alone — thrones are stone furniture.
Note the pattern in the 2-point items. In four categories there is a cheap version worth 1 and a better version worth 2: campfire vs Hearth, standard bed vs Dragon bed, standard table vs long heavy table, hot tub unheated vs heated. Upgrading each of those is four free comfort points for no extra slot.
The Stacking Rules

| Rule | Effect |
|---|---|
| Within one category | Only the highest value counts |
| Across categories | Everything stacks |
| Identical items | Never stack with themselves |
| Radius | 10 m from the player |
| Shelter | +1 comfort, and it requires being indoors |
This is the whole mechanic, and it inverts how people decorate.
A hall with five chairs, three tables and four rugs scores one chair + one table + one rug = 3 comfort (plus whatever else is present). A hall with one throne, one hearth, one heavy table, one rug, one banner, one bed and one hot tub scores far higher from seven items instead of twelve.
So the correct approach is breadth, not quantity. Go down the category list and place the best single item from each, then stop.
The 10-metre radius matters too. Comfort is measured from where you are standing when the Rested timer starts — so a sprawling hall with furniture at both ends gives you less than a compact room with the same items. Build the comfort room small and deliberately.
And do not forget shelter. The +1 for being indoors is free, and it is the same roof check that Rested itself requires — so if your comfort is not registering at all, the roof is usually the problem rather than the furniture.
Building for 17

Take the best item in each category and put them in one small room:
- Fire — a Hearth (2), not a campfire (1).
- Seating — a throne (3), not a chair (1 – 2).
- Table — a round or long heavy table (2), not a standard one (1).
- Bed — a Dragon bed (2), not a standard bed (1).
- Hot tub — heated (2).
- Then add one each of: rug (1), banner (1), Lava Lantern (1), Armor Stand (1).
- Roof it for the +1 shelter bonus.
Four of those upgrades — Hearth, throne, heavy table, Dragon bed — are worth 4 extra comfort over their cheap equivalents, which is four extra minutes of Rested for no additional floor space.
And keep it within 10 metres. A dedicated comfort alcove beside your portal is more effective than the same furniture spread across a great hall.
How to Maximise Comfort
- One item per category. Duplicates are worth nothing.
- Always take the 2-point version where one exists — Hearth, Dragon bed, heavy table, heated hot tub.
- Build a throne. At 3 comfort it is the best single item, and it needs the Stonecutter.
- Keep everything within 10 m of where you sit.
- Roof the room for the +1 shelter bonus.
- Place a Maypole or Yule Tree when they are available for 18 – 19.
Practical tips
- Comfort caps at 17 (24 minutes), or 19 with seasonal items (26 minutes).
- Only the highest item in each category counts. Five chairs equal one chair.
- A throne is 3 comfort — the best single item in the game.
- The 10-metre radius means a compact comfort room beats a sprawling hall.
- Shelter is +1, and it is the same roof check Rested itself needs.
- Comfort buys duration, not potency. The Rested bonuses never change.
Running your own Valheim server
Comfort is a build someone makes once and everyone benefits from — furniture, a roof and a Stonecutter for the throne. A gamever Valheim server keeps that hall standing for up to 10 players, so the 24-minute Rested buff is waiting for whoever logs in next rather than depending on who hosted last. One-click backups protect an interior that took real materials, and automatic updates keep client and server aligned.
Conclusion
Valheim's comfort caps at 17, which gives 24 minutes of Rested on a formula of 7 minutes base plus 1 per comfort level — rising to 19 and 26 minutes with a Maypole and a Yule Tree. The rule that decides everything is stacking: within a category only the highest-value item counts, across categories everything stacks, and identical items never stack at all — which is why a room with five chairs scores as one chair. Build breadth, not quantity: a throne (3), a Hearth (2), a heavy table (2), a Dragon bed (2) and a heated hot tub (2), then one each of rug, banner, Lava Lantern and Armor Stand, all within the 10-metre radius, and roofed for the +1 shelter bonus. And remember what you are buying: comfort changes how long Rested lasts, never how strong it is.
