Anima Vents in Dragonwilds: Different Vents, Different Runes

A glowing vent in Dragonwilds.

A rune altar lets you craft whichever rune you want. An anima vent does not"different types of vents can convert rune essence into different types of runes", which means the vent decides the output and your only choice is which vent to stand at. Introduced with Dowdun Reach, they are a second Runecrafting route with a different shape and, at higher levels, a better exchange rate.

What an Anima Vent Is

"Different types of vents convert rune essence into different types of runes." That is the mechanic in one line, and it is the whole difference from an altar.

So finding the right vent is the task. You cannot decide at the vent what to make; you decide by choosing where to go. A vent that produces Law runes is a location, not a menu option.

They are nodes rather than structures, which puts them alongside mining and woodcutting nodes in how you interact with the world — you find them, you use them, and they sit in specific places.

And they arrived with Dowdun Reach, so any guide written before that region will not mention them. As our runes guide covers, the seven runes span Runecrafting 1 to 50, and vents are the second way to reach them.

Vents Against Altars

Altars are flexible; vents are located. If you want a specific rune and you are at an altar, you make it. If you want a specific rune and you are in the field, you need the matching vent.

Both consume rune essence, and both are gated by your Runecrafting level — a vent does not let you make a rune you have not unlocked.

Which means the choice is usually about where you are. Clearing Dowdun Reach with a bag of essence from goblin and garou packs? Use the vents you pass. Sitting at your base with a stockpile? Use the altar and pick.

And note that runes are the safest thing to convert essence into. They weigh 0.0, stack to 9,999 and are retained when you die — so a vent visit turns a droppable resource into a permanent one.

The Perks That Change Vents

Card listing the Dragonwilds perks that improve anima vents.

Two Runecrafting perks apply specifically to vents, and one of them changes the exchange rate outright:

PerkLevelEffect
Lesser Anima SiphoningRunecrafting 46Each vent siphon consumes 1 rune essence to produce 12 runes
Pure EssenceRunecrafting 34Adds a chance of a Pure Essence Stone Eruption while siphoning

Twelve runes per essence beats the altar's ten by 20%. That is a permanent, unconditional improvement to every vent siphon you make after level 46 — and it is the strongest argument for hoarding essence rather than converting it early.

Pure Essence is the more interesting one, and it is not passive. The eruption "is hard to catch" — you have to shoot it down with arrows or combat spells, and the reward is roughly 30 runes matching the vent plus about 30 each of two other rune types, along with experience.

That is a far larger payout than an ordinary siphon, and it is the reason vents reward attention in a way altars do not. An altar is a menu; a vent is an activity.

So the sequencing is worth planning. Below Runecrafting 34, vents are simply a located altar. From 34 they gain a catchable bonus event. From 46 they beat the altar's exchange rate permanently. The higher your Runecrafting, the more the balance tips toward vents.

Both perks are covered in full in our skill perks guide, alongside the seven Efficiency perks — which improve auto-crafting yield rather than vent siphoning, and are a separate line entirely.

Practical tips

  • The vent decides the rune type, not you — altars are the flexible route.
  • Vents arrived with Dowdun Reach, so older guides omit them.
  • Both vents and altars consume rune essence and respect your Runecrafting level.
  • A rune altar gives 1 essence → 10 runes.
  • Lesser Anima Siphoning (RC 46) makes a vent give 12 — 20% better.
  • So hoard essence until that perk unlocks rather than converting early.
  • Pure Essence (RC 34) adds a catchable eruption worth ~30 runes of three types.
  • You must shoot the eruption down — it is not passive income.

Conclusion

Anima vents are Runecrafting nodes introduced with Dowdun Reach, and they differ from rune altars in one decisive way: "different types of vents can convert rune essence into different types of runes" — the vent picks the output, so your choice is which vent to visit rather than which rune to make. Altars are flexible and located wherever you want; vents are fixed and specific. Both consume rune essence and both respect your Runecrafting level. What tips the balance are two perks: Pure Essence at Runecrafting 34 adds a catchable Stone Eruption worth roughly 30 runes of the vent's type plus 30 each of two others — though you have to shoot it down — and Lesser Anima Siphoning at Runecrafting 46 raises the vent's exchange rate to 12 runes per essence against the altar's 10. So the practical advice is to hoard essence until level 46, at which point vents become the better conversion permanently.
