Goblin, Garou and Zombie Packs in Dragonwilds: Runes, Guaranteed

A Dragonwilds encampment.

Three humanoid enemy families in Dragonwilds drop packs, and all three pay in runes. Goblin and Garou packs give 1–3 Rune Essence on a 100% entry — guaranteed, every pack, no roll. Zombie packs skip the essence and give finished runes instead. Which quietly makes clearing camps a Runecrafting activity, and makes selling packs a mistake.

Three Packs, One Guarantee

Garou PackRune Essence 1–3, alwaysGarou berserkers, druids, hunters, thanes and the Garou King

"Always" is the important word. These are 100% table entries, not chances — every goblin pack contains rune essence, and the only variable is whether you get one, two or three.

Both cover their entire enemy family. Goblin packs come from four goblin types and Garou packs from four garou types plus the Garou King — so there is no need to hunt a specific variant.

Which turns ordinary combat into passive Runecrafting income. You are killing goblins anyway; the packs accumulate without a detour.

And the conversion rate is what makes it worthwhile. As our runes guide covers, one rune essence crafts ten runes at a rune altar. Three essence is thirty runes from a single pack.

Zombie Packs Give Finished Runes

Zombie packs drop from zombies and rotsworn zombies, and they work differently: instead of essence to convert, they contain finished runes.

Table weighting"Each table is equally weighted"

Equal table weighting means no rune type is favoured. The pack rolls a table, and each table has the same chance — so a zombie pack is an even spread across rune types rather than a bias toward the cheap ones.

Which is genuinely useful for the expensive runes. Law runes need Runecrafting 50 and Nature runes 38 — so a zombie pack can hand you a rune you cannot yet craft.

That is the real argument for zombie packs over essence. Goblin and garou essence is only as useful as your Runecrafting level allows; zombie runes bypass the level requirement entirely.

5–10 Air Runes at 10/100 is the published line — a one-in-ten chance of a decent stack, on a table that also holds the rarer types.

Why Open Rather Than Sell

Card explaining why to open Dragonwilds packs.

Runes are the safest thing you can own in Dragonwilds. They weigh 0.0, stack to 9,999, and — critically — are retained if you die. No other resource in the game survives a death run.

Which changes the calculation on packs entirely. A pack converted into runes is wealth that cannot be dropped, cannot be looted and costs nothing to carry. A pack sold is coins that can be lost.

Three rune essence becomes thirty runes. At 0.0 weight and permanent retention, that is thirty units of spell capacity for no logistical cost at all.

And Air runes are usable from Runecrafting 1, dealing 13–22 base damage as staff ammunition — so even the earliest character converts pack essence into something immediately useful.

The vents are the other conversion route. As our anima vents guide covers, Lesser Anima Siphoning at Runecrafting 46 turns one essence into twelve runes rather than ten — so hoarding essence until that perk unlocks is worth 20% more.

Open every pack. There is no version of the maths where selling one beats converting it.

Practical tips

  • Goblin and Garou packs give 1–3 Rune Essence on a 100% entry — always.
  • Goblin packs drop from warriors, archers, runts and bruisers.
  • Garou packs drop from berserkers, druids, hunters, thanes and the Garou King.
  • One rune essence crafts ten runes — so three essence is thirty.
  • Zombie packs give finished runes, bypassing your Runecrafting level.
  • Their tables are equally weighted — no bias toward cheap runes.
  • Runes weigh 0.0, stack to 9,999 and are retained on death.
  • Hold essence until Lesser Anima Siphoning (RC 46) for 12 runes instead of 10.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' three humanoid packs all pay in runes. Goblin packs and Garou packs each contain 1–3 Rune Essence as a guaranteed 100% entry — from four goblin types, and from four garou types plus the Garou King — which turns ordinary camp clearing into passive Runecrafting income at ten runes per essence. Zombie packs, from zombies and rotsworn zombies, work differently: they contain finished runes on equally weighted tables, including 5–10 Air Runes at 10/100, which means they can hand you rune types your Runecrafting level cannot yet craft. And because runes weigh 0.0, stack to 9,999 and are retained when you die, converting a pack is the only way to turn a drop into wealth that a death run cannot take from you. Hold your essence until Lesser Anima Siphoning at Runecrafting 46, which makes it twelve runes per essence instead of ten.
