Wisp Fountains in Valheim: Ten Stone, One Torn Spirit, and You Can See Again

The Mistlands are, without a Wisplight, close to unplayable — a biome where the fog hides the ground you are standing on. The Wisplight runs on Wisps, and Wisps come from a Wisp Fountain that costs ten stone and one torn spirit. It is one of the cheapest structures in Valheim and one of the few that is genuinely a prerequisite rather than a convenience.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.
What It Costs

| Stone | ×10 |
| Torn spirit | ×1 |
| Built from | The Stonecutter |
| Durability | 100 |
| Light source | Yes |
| Rain damage | No |
Ten stone is nothing. The gating material is the Torn spirit, and you need exactly one — so the whole structure is a single-item unlock wearing a stone recipe.
It requires a Stonecutter, which means Iron. That places the Wisp Fountain behind the Swamp rather than behind the Mistlands themselves — you can and should build it before you go.
It is a light source in its own right, which is a small bonus: a fountain by the door is also a lamp.
Its description is one of Iron Gate's better jokes: "Attracts wisps. They mostly come at night... mostly."
When Wisps Appear

Wisps are attracted when it is dark — and "dark" means night or rain. The wiki states it plainly: they come "when it is dark; either when it is night, or raining, in any biome."
Read that last clause carefully, because it is the useful part. A Wisp Fountain works anywhere. You do not need to build it in the Mistlands, or near them. A fountain at your Meadows home base collects wisps exactly as well as one in the fog.
And rain counts. Since rain applies Wet and is common in several biomes, a fountain collects on a far more generous schedule than "at night" suggests. In the Swamp — dark and raining permanently — the conditions are effectively always met.
Night is only nine minutes of a thirty-minute cycle, as our day-night guide covers — so rain is doing most of the work here, not darkness.
Build it where you walk past. The collection is passive but the pickup is not, so a fountain at the door of your hall gets emptied and one on a distant hilltop does not.
What You Need Wisps For

A Wisp goes into a Wisplight, and the Wisplight dispels mist. That is the entire chain, and it is short.
Without it the Mistlands are not hard — they are opaque. The fog is dense enough that the ground, the drops and the Seekers are all hidden, which makes the Wisplight less a piece of equipment than an admission ticket. As our Mistlands guide covers, going in without one is not a challenge run, it is a fall down a shaft.
So the Wisp Fountain is a prerequisite, not a decoration — and the ordering is worth stating: Stonecutter → Torn spirit → Wisp Fountain → Wisps → Wisplight → Mistlands. Miss a step and the biome is closed.
The Torn spirit is the item to look out for early. One is all you need, and having it in a chest before you plan the Mistlands trip removes the only real gate in the chain.
Build the fountain before the first trip, not after. Because wisps accumulate passively at night and in rain, a fountain built a few days early has already produced what you need by the time you set off — whereas one built the evening you leave has produced nothing.
Practical tips
- Stone ×10 and Torn spirit ×1, built from the Stonecutter.
- The Stonecutter needs Iron, so this sits behind the Swamp, not the Mistlands.
- Wisps appear when it is dark — night OR rain — in ANY biome.
- So build the fountain at home, not in the fog.
- Rain does most of the collecting; night is only 9 of every 30 minutes.
- A Wisp goes in a Wisplight, and the Wisplight dispels mist.
- Build it days before the Mistlands trip, so it has already collected.
- It is also a light source — put it by the door.
Running your own Valheim server
Wisps accumulate at night and in rain, which are things that happen on the world's clock rather than yours. A gamever Valheim server keeps that clock running for up to 10 players, so a fountain built before the weekend has stocked itself by the time the group sets out.
Conclusion
The Valheim Wisp Fountain costs Stone ×10 and a single Torn spirit, is built from the Stonecutter, and carries 100 durability while doubling as a light source. Wisps are attracted when it is dark — meaning night or rain — in any biome, which is the detail that matters most: you can build the fountain at your home base rather than in the Mistlands, and since night is only nine minutes of every thirty, rain is doing most of the collecting. The chain it sits in is short and absolute — Stonecutter → Torn spirit → Wisp Fountain → Wisps → Wisplight → Mistlands — because the Wisplight is what dispels the mist, and without it the biome is opaque rather than merely dangerous. Build the fountain days before the trip, so it has already stocked itself when you leave.
