What the Ashlands Update Tells Us About Deep North Day One

Card showing what the Ashlands update did to existing worlds and buildings.

Iron Gate have said very little about what 9 September will do to an existing world beyond the biome-generation rule. But they have done this before, and they documented it thoroughly. The Ashlands update — the last major biome release — altered terrain at the outer rim of every world and warned that structures built there "will collapse." Deep North sits at the same outer rim. That is a precedent, not a prediction, and it is worth reading before launch day.

What Iron Gate Warned Before Ashlands

WarningTheir wording
Terrain changed"Significant changes to the terrain generation around the Ashlands, and the outer rim of Valheim worlds"
The map was reshaped"The terrain around it has been lowered and turned to ocean"
Buildings were at risk"If they are built on terrain that gets altered, they will collapse"
Explored areas would not generate"If you have already explored a lot of the Ashlands, the update will not generate properly in that world and we recommend that you start a new one"
Mods had to go first"Disable them before you download the Ashlands update, otherwise the game will most likely not launch properly"

Read the first three together. This was not only "new content appears in unexplored places" — existing terrain was rewritten, the approach became ocean, and anything standing on the changed ground came down.

The fourth is the rule everyone knows, and it is identical to the one Iron Gate have stated for 1.0: "biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored."

What This Does and Does Not Tell Us

Card distinguishing confirmed Deep North facts from the Ashlands precedent.

Be clear about the line here.

    Confirmed for 1.0:

  • Saves are untouched"Nothing. Your old saves will still be where you last left them."
  • The Deep North generates only in unexplored terrain.
  • Iron Gate recommend a fresh world for the best experience.
  • There is no public test branch"we want everyone to get to experience 1.0 at the same time!"
  • Mods are not guaranteed to work.

Not confirmed for 1.0, but true of Ashlands:

  • Terrain around the new biome was altered, including the outer rim of every world.
  • The approach was lowered and turned to ocean.
  • Structures on altered terrain collapsed.

Iron Gate have not said whether Deep North does any of this. They may reshape the far north the way they reshaped the far south; they may not. We are not going to assert either. What we can say is that the last time they added a rim biome, they warned people about buildings, and they were right to.

One thing the Ashlands page does confirm about Deep North indirectly: Iron Gate called the Ashlands "the penultimate biome of the game." Deep North is the last one.

If You Have Built in the Far North

Card advising players who have built structures in the far north before 1.0.

Most players have not, because the current Deep North is placeholder terrain with little reason to settle there. If your group has, the Ashlands precedent suggests a few cheap precautions:

    1. Take a manual backup before you patch. This is already the advice for 1.0 given there is no test branch — but if you have northern structures it stops being optional.

    2. Screenshot the layout and the coordinates. If a build does come down, rebuilding from a picture is far easier than from memory. Live articles cover how to check coordinates in game.

    3. Consider moving anything irreplaceable south. Chests, trophies and gear are trivially portable; the building is not. Emptying a northern outpost costs one trip.

    4. Do not start a major northern project in the next fortnight. Whatever 1.0 does to that terrain, building on it now is the worst possible timing.

    5. Remember portals. A northern outpost is usually reached by portal, and portals are cheap to re-establish. It is the base itself that is at risk, not your access.

None of this is a prediction that your base will fall. It is a cheap insurance policy against a documented precedent, taken in the two weeks before an update that cannot be rehearsed.

The Mod Advice Is Stronger Than You Think

Card explaining that Iron Gate advised disabling mods before downloading the update.

For Ashlands, Iron Gate did not say "expect mods to break." They said disable them first:

"Disable them before you download the Ashlands update, otherwise the game will most likely not launch properly."

Note the sequencing: before you download, not before you launch. That is a stronger instruction than the general "mods may not work" line in the 1.0 FAQ, and it comes from the last time they shipped a comparable update.

For a server, that means the mod stack comes off before the update runs, not after you discover a problem. If your server updates automatically — which is normally exactly what you want — this is the one occasion to know your update window in advance so the stack can be pulled first.

Why it breaks is documented too. Since the asset bundle change in 0.217.40, Iron Gate advise modders that "asset path might change during development, so if your mod relies on a certain asset having a certain path, it's likely that an update will break your mod." A release adding an entire biome moves a great many paths.

The Ashlands page also carries a PTB detail worth remembering even though 1.0 has no test branch: when a test branch does exist, "all participants must be on the PTB, otherwise you will not be able to connect", and you should "make backups of your worlds and characters if you want to be able to use them in the non-PTB version." Useful for the hotfix branches that will follow 1.0.

Practical tips

  • Ashlands altered existing terrain at the outer rim and collapsed buildings standing on it. Deep North sits at the same rim.
  • Iron Gate have not said 1.0 does the same. Treat this as precedent, not prediction.
  • Back up manually before 9 September — doubly so if you have built in the far north.
  • Screenshot northern builds and note the coordinates.
  • Do not start a major northern project now.
  • Disable mods before you download the update, which is what Iron Gate advised last time.
  • Deep North is the final biome — Ashlands was called the penultimate one.

Running your own Valheim 1.0 server

A one-click backup taken the evening before is the entire insurance policy here, and restoring from it should be a button rather than a folder operation performed while your group waits. A gamever Valheim server takes that snapshot before the update applies, keeps the world online around the clock for 1–10 players with full crossplay across PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, and lets you stand up a second world in minutes if you decide a fresh start is the cleaner answer.

Conclusion

Iron Gate have not detailed what 9 September does to existing worlds beyond the generation rule — but the Ashlands update is a documented precedent for the same kind of release. That update made "significant changes to the terrain generation around the Ashlands, and the outer rim of Valheim worlds", lowered the approach and turned it to ocean, and warned that structures on altered ground "will collapse." The Deep North occupies the same outer rim. None of that is confirmed for 1.0 and we are not claiming it will happen — but the precautions are cheap: back up manually, screenshot and note the coordinates of any northern build, move anything irreplaceable south, and do not start a northern project in the next fortnight. And follow Iron Gate's own Ashlands mod instruction, which is stronger than the 1.0 FAQ's: disable mods before you download the update.
