Tomes in Dragonwilds: Free Experience, and the Rule That Doubles It

A lamplit interior in Dragonwilds.

Tomes are the small books that turn up in chests across Ashenfall, and reading one grants free experience in a skill. There are two volumes for each of twelve skills, plus four special tomes from quests. Most players open them the moment they find them — which is the one thing you should not do, because tome experience is affected by your amulets, rings and potion buffs.

Twelve Skills, Two Volumes Each

Card listing the Dragonwilds skill tomes.

There is a Vol 1 and a Vol 2 for each of the twelve skills:

GroupTomes
CombatAttack, Magic, Ranged
GatheringMining, Woodcutting, Fishing, Farming
CraftingArtisan, Construction, Cooking, Runecrafting
MovementAgility

A Tome of Attack Vol 1 gives 100 Attack experience. The description calls it "a small amount", and at level 1 that is a meaningful chunk — at level 70 it is not. Volume 2 is the higher-value version of the same book.

They weigh 2.0 and stack to 99. That combination is the important one: a tome is not a "read it now" item. Ninety-nine of them stacked in a chest weigh nothing per unit and can be saved for a session where they are worth several times more.

Note the weight changed. Skill tomes were 0.0 kg until Update 1 (0.8.0), when they became 2.0 kg and gained a description. If a guide tells you tomes are weightless, it predates June 2025.

Do not confuse tomes with the decorative Skill Tome furnitureSkill Tome – Artisan, Skill Tome – Attack and so on are decorations with the same naming pattern and no experience attached.

The Four That Are Not Skill Tomes

Tome of the TitanBlack Knight's Fortress+750 each in Magic, Ranged and Attack
Tome of the Dragon SlayerDragon Slayer+500 each in Attack, Ranged and Magic

Three of the four are identical. The Volcano, the Undying and the Titan each grant +750 in Attack, Magic and Ranged2,250 total experience apiece, against a skill tome's 100 in one skill. Only the Tome of the Dragon Slayer is smaller, at +500 each, or 1,500 total — which is fitting, since it comes from the earliest of the four quests.

The wiki flags the oddity itself. On the Tome of the Undying's page: "Despite it being a reward for the next region, the Tome of the Titan rewards the same amount of experience." Progressing a region does not buy you a bigger tome.

The Volcano is the newest of the four, arriving with Eye on Ashenfall 0.12.0 from the Icthlarin's Little Helper reward pack.

These weigh 6.0 rather than 2.0, three times a skill tome — the game marking them as the heavier prize.

All four are quest rewards, not chest drops, which means you get exactly as many as there are quests. There is no farming them, and that is the strongest possible argument for reading them under a full stack of buffs.

Read Them Buffed

Card explaining that Dragonwilds tome experience is affected by buffs.

The wiki states it plainly: "Skill tome experience can be affected by respective amulets, rings, and potion buffs, but not by food buffs like Knowledgeable Nourishment."

That single sentence is worth more than the rest of this article. A tome read cold gives its base value. A tome read with the right gear and potion running gives substantially more — and it costs you nothing but the sequencing.

The stack to build before reading:

  1. The matching Inspiring trinket+5%, permanent while equipped, one per skill.
  2. A Focused potion for that skill+15% or +30%, with Super Focused holding 30% for a full 600 seconds.
  3. Read every tome for that skill in the window.

Together that is the +35% ceiling, applied to a batch of tomes rather than to a single one. Ten stacked Attack tomes read at +35% are worth three and a half free tomes.

Food buffs are explicitly excluded, so do not spend a Knowledgeable Nourishment meal on a reading session — it does nothing here, though it is still worth having for the actual training.

And this is why the stack limit matters. Tomes stack to 99. Sort them by skill, hold them, and read each pile in one buffed ten-minute window rather than opening each book as it drops. It is the highest-return habit available for zero materials.

Practical tips

  • Twenty-four skill tomes — Vol 1 and Vol 2 for each of twelve skills.
  • A Tome of Attack Vol 1 gives 100 Attack experience.
  • Tome experience IS boosted by amulets, rings and potions — but not by food buffs.
  • So never read a tome as you find it. Stack them and read under buffs.
  • The +35% ceiling (Inspiring trinket + a 30% Focused potion) applies to tomes too.
  • The Tome of Volcano gives +750 in Attack, Magic and Ranged — 2,250 total.
  • Special tomes weigh 6.0; skill tomes weigh 2.0 and stack to 99.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds has twenty-four skill tomes — a Vol 1 and Vol 2 for each of twelve skills — plus four special tomes from quests. A Tome of Attack Vol 1 gives 100 Attack experience, while three of the four special tomes — Volcano, Undying and Titan — each grant +750 in Attack, Magic and Ranged at once, 2,250 apiece; only the Tome of the Dragon Slayer is smaller at +500 each. The rule that changes how you use all of them is that tome experience is affected by amulets, rings and potion buffs — but not by food buffs. So the correct habit is the opposite of the instinctive one: do not read a tome when you find it. They weigh 2.0 and stack to 99, so sort them by skill, hoard them, and read each pile inside a window with the matching Inspiring trinket and a Super Focused potion running — turning every tome into roughly a third of a free extra tome.
