The Six Woods of Valheim: All 2.0 Weight, All Stack to 50, All Teleport

Stacks of wood in a Valheim base.

Valheim's six woods share exactly the same logistics: weight 2.0, stack 50, and all of them teleport. That is unusual — ores do not teleport, and metals vary in weight. Wood is the one material family where the only question is which tree you need to find.

The answer is a different tree, a different biome and often a different axe for each.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

Wood has the widest sourcing in the game. Beyond every tree and stump, it comes from scavenged branches, chopping bushes including berry bushes, Greydwarf drops, and deconstructing naturally-generated wooden buildings and chests.

Ashwood's axe requirement is misleadingly low. A Stone axe fells a Scorched Tree — but the Ashlands only open after The Queen, so it is a late-game material with an early-game tool.

Ancient bark has a second source. Beyond chopping Ancient Trees it is found in Sunken Crypt chests, which makes it the only special wood you can loot rather than fell.

What Each One Is For

Corewood"Perfect for building log cabins." Its stated advantage is structural: a greater support factor than common Wood, which allows larger and taller buildings. It builds the log beam and log pole set, sharp stakes, the sitting log, the Bonfire, and the Butcher's table.

Finewood"High quality wood for fine carpentry." The crafting wood: bows, the Fermenter, and most of the refined furniture set.

Ancient bark"An ancient and sturdy material." The Swamp-tier weapon wood: Ancient bark spear, Battleaxe, Iron sledge, Iron buckler, the whole Root armour set, and later the Crystal battleaxe, Draugr Fang and Fang spear. It also builds the Longship.

Yggdrasil wood"Godflesh, wood from the Great Tree." Pure endgame infrastructure: the Sap extractor, Black forge, Eitr refinery, Galdr table, Rune table and Ballista.

Ashwood"Wood hardened by fire and ash." The Ashlands building set plus the siege equipment: the Battering ram, the Catapult, the Metal cutter and the Gem cutter.

Note that the special woods rarely substitute for each other. Each one gates a specific station or weapon, so stockpiling one does not reduce the need for the rest.

The Yield Difference Nobody Mentions

Card comparing wood yields per tree in Valheim.

The same wood comes at very different rates depending on the tree:

WoodTreeSmall log dropsSplit
FinewoodOak2550% Wood / 50% Finewood
FinewoodBirch1050% Wood / 50% Finewood
CorewoodPine1550% Wood / 50% Corewood
Ancient barkAncient Tree1050% Wood / 50% Ancient bark
Yggdrasil woodYggdrasil shoot1050% Wood / 50% Yggdrasil wood
AshwoodScorched Tree1066.67% Ashwood / 33.33% Wood

Chop Oaks, not Birches, for Finewood. At 25 drops against 10 on the same split, one Oak gives roughly 12–13 Finewood where a Birch gives 5 — and both need the same Bronze axe.

Ashwood is the only wood that comes out ahead of plain Wood on its own tree. At 66.67% it is the one special wood where the majority of the log is the good stuff.

Remember large logs split into two small logs, so every figure above is per half-tree.

Burning Them Is Almost Always Wrong

Card on why not to obliterate Valheim wood.

All five wood types convert in the Obliterator at the same rate — 5 wood for 1 Coal — and the wiki flags this as a mistake:

Wood and meats can be converted to coal at a 1:1 conversion rate using a Charcoal kiln or cooking station, making it resource-inefficient to place these in the Obliterator.

That is a five-fold difference. Anything wooden belongs in a kiln, not an Obliterator — the Obliterator is for trophies and surplus items with no other sink.

All six woods teleport, so hauling them home is never the problem that ore is. Weight 2.0 and a stack of 50 means a full stack is 100 weight — plan a Megingjord for a serious logging trip.

Six wood types across five biomes is a logistics problem best split between people on one persistent world. A gamever Valheim server keeps it running for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

Valheim's six woods are logistically identical — weight 2.0, stack 50, all teleporting — and differ only in where they come from and what they gate. Wood is everywhere; Corewood comes from Pine and carries a greater support factor for taller buildings; Finewood comes from Birch and Oak and does the fine carpentry; Ancient bark comes from the Swamp's Ancient Trees and is the Swamp-tier weapon wood, also found in Sunken Crypt chests; Yggdrasil wood needs a Black metal axe and builds the endgame stations; and Ashwood needs only a Stone axe but lives behind The Queen. The yield gap is the practical finding: an Oak gives 25 small-log drops against a Birch's 10 on the same 50/50 split, so chop Oaks for Finewood — and Ashwood is the only wood that comes out at 66.67%, a majority of its own log. Finally, never obliterate wood: the Obliterator takes 5 wood per coal where a Charcoal kiln is 1:1.
