The Attack Skill in Dragonwilds: Parry at 5, Specials at 8, Tempest Shield at 11

Card listing the Dragonwilds Attack skill unlocks.

You cannot parry in Dragonwilds until Attack level 5, and you cannot use a weapon special until level 8. Those two facts explain why early melee feels flat and then suddenly clicks — the mechanics the combat rework is built around are locked behind the first few levels of the skill. Everything else in the Attack tree is either a named unlock in the first forty levels or the passive that runs underneath all of them — every level reduces the stamina cost of using melee weapons by 0.5%. Here is the whole list.

On sourcing. Jagex do not publish the Attack tree. The unlocks below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.

The Named Unlocks

LevelUnlock
5Parry
8Melee Weapon Special Actions
11Tempest Shield
16Weapon Expertise
20Enchant Weapon: Fire
23Adaptability
27Weapon Rack
30Enchant Weapon: Air
34Lesser Attack Potion
37Training Dummy
40Whetstone
99Attack Skillcape

Every level reduces melee stamina cost by 0.5% — the passive runs on all levels, not just the named ones, and accumulates across the whole tree.

Three unlocks change how fights work rather than how hard you hit.

Parry at 5 is the foundation of the combat rework — it is one of only three ways to stagger an enemy, and a staggered enemy cannot retaliate.

Melee Weapon Special Actions at 8 turns weapon class into a decision. Warhammer and Abyssal Whip specials both stagger non-immune enemies, so from level 8 your weapon choice is also an interrupt choice.

Tempest Shield at 11 is the one people miss, and its actual description is stronger than its reputation: it "conjures a shield of Air Magic that prevents all damage for a limited time while blocking, triggering a powerful burst when the spell ends" — and Attack levels increase its duration, so it improves without any further unlock.

It is also the documented counter to unblockable attacks. The Garou Berserker's red attack and the Vault Guardian Hulk's double slam both stagger you through a normal block, "without the use of Tempest Shield."

And Adaptability at 23 is the other quiet one. With it, evading or blocking no longer interrupts your combos — which is the difference between a defensive move costing you your damage and costing you nothing.

The Support Unlocks

Card explaining Dragonwilds Attack skill support unlocks.

Four unlocks are buildable or consumable rather than abilities:

  • Weapon Rack at 27 — display storage, and it can be set to Private and locked so nobody takes what is on it.
  • Lesser Attack Potion at 34 — brewed at the Brewing Cauldron, granting Focused Strikes: +25% critical hit chance with melee attacks for 600 seconds.
  • Training Dummy at 37 — a practice target.
  • Whetstone at 40not a repair item. It sharpens a melee weapon for +2 damage for ten minutes.

The Training Dummy deserves a mention because of what it implies. Attack experience comes from "defeating enemies with melee weapons", and "the higher the tier of the weapon, the higher the base damage, and thus the more experience earned." A dummy gives you a target that does not fight back — useful for practising the parry timing that levels 5 and 11 are built around.

The Whetstone is worth correcting a common assumption about. Despite the name, it is a damage buff, not a repair tool+2 melee damage for ten minutes, stacking with everything else you can hold. Repairing gear is the Artisan tree's job, through Magical Mending at 27 and the durability passive. Attack sharpens; Artisan mends.

Two more experience sources exist beyond killing things: Skill Tomes, which grant fixed experience, and special reward tomes from quests such as the Tome of the Dragon Slayer.

What Attack Does Not Cover

Card explaining what the Dragonwilds Attack skill does not govern.

Attack levels your melee effectiveness — it does not decide what your damage counts as. That comes from the weapon:

AxisDecided by
Combat style — meleeAttack, and the weapon
Damage type — stab, slash, crushThe weapon class
Element — fire, air, water, earthEnchantments and spells

Which is why the two Enchant Weapon unlocks matter so much — and they are damage buffs as well as elemental ones. Enchant Weapon: Fire at 20 gives +33% melee weapon damage for two minutes and makes critical hits inflict Burning; Enchant Weapon: Air at 30 raises attack speed by at least 15%. Together they let a melee build reach the elemental axis at all — and the Journal records separate weaknesses on all three axes, so an enemy resistant to melee may still be weak to fire.

The clearest worked example is the Garou Hunter, weak to Melee, Air and Stab and resistant to Magic, Earth and Slash. A stabbing weapon with Enchant Weapon: Air hits three weaknesses at once — and that combination is not available until Attack 30.

Meanwhile the vault answer is Crush. Every vault guardian the Journal documents is weak to Crush, and warhammers deliver both Crush damage and a stagger special.

One thing Attack cannot fix: General Velgar. No weakness, no resistance, and immune to stagger — so parries, specials and enchantments all lose their edge. That fight is a straight test of gear and skill.

Levelling It Efficiently

Card giving practical Dragonwilds Attack levelling advice.

The experience rule is unusually player-friendly: "The higher the tier of the weapon, the higher the base damage, and thus the more experience earned." Upgrading pays twice — the better weapon both kills faster and trains faster.

    A practical order:

  1. Push to 5 immediately for Parry. Before that, melee is genuinely missing a mechanic.
  2. Then 8 and 11specials and Tempest Shield. That is the point at which unblockable attacks stop being lethal surprises.
  3. 20 and 30 for the Fire and Air enchantments, which open the elemental axis.
  4. Stop worrying after 40. The last named unlock is the Whetstone at 40; everything above it is −0.5% stamina per level and the skillcape at 99.

That last point is worth stating plainly, given the XP curve. Level 93 costs 342,568 experience and 99 costs a million — so pushing Attack from 40 to 99 buys you accumulated stamina reduction and a cape, at a price that dwarfs everything you spent getting there.

On a shared server, spread the combat skills. Garou Berserkers fold to Magic, Druids to Ranged and Hunters to Melee — three units of one faction, each countered by a different skill. Six melee players is the worst possible composition for a Garou camp.

Practical tips

  • Parry unlocks at Attack 5 — before that, melee is missing its core mechanic.
  • Weapon specials at 8; Tempest Shield at 11, the counter to unblockable attacks.
  • Enchant Weapon: Fire at 20, Air at 30 — the only way melee reaches the elemental axis.
  • Adaptability at 23 stops evading and blocking from interrupting your combos.
  • The Whetstone is a damage buff, not a repair tool+2 damage for ten minutes.
  • Every level gives −0.5% melee stamina cost — the passive runs on all levels.
  • Higher-tier weapons train Attack faster as well as hitting harder.
  • Nothing new after 40 until the skillcape — spend the experience elsewhere.

Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server

Combat skills reward a group that specialises rather than one where everybody levels the same thing — and specialising only pays off when the same people return to the same world. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds' Attack skill front-loads everything that matters. Parry arrives at level 5, Melee Weapon Special Actions at 8 and Tempest Shield at 11 — the last being the documented counter to unblockable attacks like the Garou Berserker's red attack and the Vault Guardian Hulk's double slam. Weapon Expertise at 16, Adaptability at 23 and the two Enchant Weapon unlocks — Fire at 20 and Air at 30 — round out the abilities, while Weapon Rack at 27, the Lesser Attack Potion at 34, the Training Dummy at 37 and the Whetstone at 40 — which sharpens a weapon for +2 damage rather than repairing it — cover the practical side. Every level grants −0.5% melee stamina cost, and the last named unlock is at 40 — so given that level 99 costs a million experience, pushing Attack past the forties buys accumulated stamina savings and a skillcape, nothing more. Level it with the best weapon you own, since higher-tier weapons train it faster.
