Storage in Valheim: Ten Slots, Twenty-Four, or Thirty-Two

A Valheim storage room.

Valheim has three chests, and the jump between them is larger than the names suggest. A basic Chest holds 10 slots. A Reinforced chest holds 24 — more than double. A Black metal chest holds 32. The grid shapes differ too, which matters more than it sounds once you are sorting by row rather than by chest.

On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish system documentation. The figures below come from the community wikis and can change with any patch.

Three Chest Sizes

The first upgrade is the big one. Going from 10 to 24 slots is a 140% increase — you are replacing two and a half basic chests with one reinforced one. The second upgrade, 24 to 32, adds a further third.

So the storage curve front-loads. If you are still running rows of basic chests after unlocking reinforced ones, you are using roughly two and a half times the wall space you need.

The Black metal chest is Plains-tier by material. As our tar guide covers, it needs Tar, which comes from Growths in Plains tar pits — a fight against a 100 HP enemy that is immune to Stagger and hits for 45 Blunt + 50 Poison.

Tar can be teleported, at least, so a single Plains trip supplies a whole storage room.

Plan Rows, Not Chests

The grids are 5×2, 6×4 and 8×4 — and the depth is what changes how you sort.

A basic chest is only two rows deep, which means row-based organisation barely works. A reinforced or black metal chest is four rows deep, which is enough to give each row a category: metals on the top row, food on the second, and so on.

That is the practical argument for upgrading beyond the raw slot count. Ten slots in a 5×2 grid is a bag; twenty-four in a 6×4 is a filing system.

Label them. As our signs guide covers, a sign costs one coal and two wood and holds 50 bytes — enough for one clear word in English, half that in Cyrillic. One word per sign, above each chest, is the whole system.

And keep the vocabulary short and consistent with your portal tags, which are capped at ten characters. A base where ORE, WOOD and FOOD appear on both signs and portals is navigable by someone who has never been there.

Storage Is a Transport Problem

Card explaining why Valheim storage placement matters.

The reason storage placement matters in Valheim and not in most survival games is the portal rule. Every ore and every metal is blocked from teleportation, along with Dragon eggs, the Dvergr extractor, Mechanical springs, Charred cogwheels and Hildir's chests.

So the chest near the mine is as important as the one at home. A forward base with a smelter and a reinforced chest turns an ore haul into an ingot haul — still not teleportable, but far denser per boat trip.

Which makes reinforced chests the practical mid-game answer. They need no Plains material, hold 24 slots, and are cheap enough to build several at every site you work.

Build storage before you need it. The moment you realise you need another chest is the moment you are standing over dropped items with a full inventory — and dropped items despawn.

The Portal stone ends the whole problem. Once placed, it carries ores, metals and everything else on the blocked list, at which point your storage layout becomes a convenience rather than a logistics constraint.

Practical tips

  • Chest 10 slots (5×2), Reinforced 24 (6×4), Black metal 32 (8×4).
  • The first upgrade is a 140% increase — the second adds a third.
  • Four-row grids allow row-based sorting; a 5×2 chest does not.
  • Black metal chests need Tar from Plains tar pits.
  • Tar can be teleported, so one trip supplies a storage room.
  • Ore and metal cannot be teleported — put chests at the mine, not just at home.
  • Label with signs: one coal, two wood, one word.
  • Match sign and portal vocabulary so the base reads consistently.

Running your own Valheim server

A sorted storage hall is weeks of group work, and it only pays off if it is still sorted when everybody logs back in. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

Valheim has three chests: the basic Chest at 10 slots in a 5×2 grid, the Reinforced chest at 24 in a 6×4, and the Black metal chest at 32 in an 8×4. The first upgrade is the significant one — a 140% increase — and the four-row grids of the larger two are what make row-based sorting possible at all, which is a bigger practical difference than the slot count alone. The Black metal chest needs Tar from Plains tar pits, though tar itself can be teleported, so one trip supplies a room. And storage placement matters more here than in most survival games because every ore and metal is blocked from portals: the chest and smelter at the mine are as important as the ones at home, right up until the Portal stone removes the constraint entirely.
