Stagger in Dragonwilds: How to Cause It, How to Avoid It, and Who Is Immune

Stagger is Dragonwilds' interrupt: a brief stun during which the target cannot retaliate — and it works on you as readily as on them. There are exactly three documented ways to stagger an enemy, two ways to get staggered yourself, and a list of enemies that simply ignore it, General Velgar among them. There is also a half-second recovery window where a specific armour bonus stops working, which is the sort of detail that quietly costs you damage.
On sourcing. Jagex do not document stagger. The details below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.
Causing It
Three methods, and only three:
| Method | Detail |
|---|---|
| Parrying | Parry an enemy strike — the universal option |
| Abyssal Whip special | Staggers non-immune enemies |
| Warhammer special | Staggers non-immune enemies |
Parrying is the one available to everybody, and it slots into the wider combat design: the rework made blocking and parrying central, and parrying is also how a shield user generates value beyond simply not dying.
The two weapon specials are worth knowing as build choices. Warhammers are a Crush weapon class — and every vault guardian the Journal documents is weak to Crush — so a warhammer in a vault gives you a damage-type advantage and a stagger tool in the same swing.
Some boss-type enemies stagger automatically at a health threshold. The wiki documents the Abyssal Demon staggering at 50% HP, and notes this applies to a set of boss-type enemies rather than only that one.
Suffering It

You can be staggered two ways:
1. Blocking while your stamina is depleted. This is the everyday cause, and it is the reason stamina management is a defensive skill rather than an offensive one. An empty bar turns your shield into a liability.
2. Attempting to block an unblockable attack — "without the use of Tempest Shield". Two are named:
- The Garou Berserker's "red attack"
- The Vault Guardian Hulk's double slam
The red attack is a visual tell, and it is the game telling you to dodge rather than block. Holding block against it staggers you and hands the enemy a free window.
Tempest Shield is the documented exception, which makes it more than a damage-reduction spell — it is the answer to attacks that block cannot stop.
The Recovery Window

Stagger does not end cleanly. "Enemies take 0.5s after a stagger wears off to regain consciousness and aggression."
That half second is free damage — with one exception that matters:
"During this recoup moment, the Melee Armour set bonus perk will not increase player damage."
Read that against the armour set bonuses. The melee 3/3 set bonus is +25% damage to staggered targets — and it stops applying during the recovery window, precisely when the enemy is still helpless.
So the melee set bonus rewards hitting during the stagger, not after it. If you are queuing a big slow swing to land as the enemy gets up, you are timing it into the one window where your set bonus is switched off.
Stagger duration varies by enemy, and the wiki's table is only partly filled — but two documented values show the spread: the Chicken at 4 seconds and the Cow at 2 seconds. Duration is per-enemy and does not follow their difficulty.
Who Is Immune

Some enemies are outright immune, and the one the wiki names explicitly is significant: General Velgar — Immune.
That fits what we already know about Velgar from the Journal: no weakness, no resistance. The fight is designed to have no exploit — you cannot type-counter it, and you cannot interrupt it. It is a straight test of your build, which is why Jagex used it as their balance benchmark when explaining the Ranged rebalance.
The practical consequence is a loadout decision. Against staggerable enemies, a warhammer or an Abyssal Whip buys you control. Against Velgar those specials lose half their value, and a weapon chosen purely for damage output is the better pick.
For a group, stagger is a role. One player carrying a Crush weapon into a vault covers both the damage-type weakness and the interrupt — and since staggered enemies cannot retaliate, that player is protecting everyone else's uptime, not just their own.
Practical tips
- Three ways to stagger: parry, Abyssal Whip special, Warhammer special.
- Warhammers are Crush — and every documented vault guardian is weak to Crush.
- Blocking on empty stamina staggers you. Stamina is a defensive stat.
- Unblockable attacks stagger you through a block — the Garou Berserker's red attack and the Vault Guardian Hulk's double slam.
- Tempest Shield is the documented counter to unblockable attacks.
- Enemies need 0.5 s to recover after a stagger ends.
- The melee set bonus does NOT apply during that recovery window — hit during the stagger, not after.
- General Velgar is immune — and has no weakness or resistance either.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
Stagger is a role in a group fight — someone carrying the interrupt protects everyone's uptime — and roles only pay off when the same people play the same world often enough to keep them. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Stagger briefly stops a target retaliating, and Dragonwilds gives you exactly three ways to cause it: parrying an enemy strike, the Abyssal Whip's special, and the Warhammer's special — the last being doubly useful because Warhammers deal Crush, the damage type every documented vault guardian is weak to. Some boss-type enemies stagger themselves at a health threshold; the Abyssal Demon does so at 50%. You get staggered two ways: blocking with no stamina left, and blocking an unblockable attack such as the Garou Berserker's red attack or the Vault Guardian Hulk's double slam — with Tempest Shield the documented exception. Enemies need 0.5 seconds to recover afterwards, and the detail worth acting on is that the melee armour set bonus does not increase your damage during that window — so land your hits during the stagger rather than timing them for the moment it ends. And General Velgar is immune, which alongside having no weakness or resistance makes that fight a pure test of your build.
