How to Get Coal in Palworld 1.0 (& What It's For)

Card showing Coal's sources including Blazamut at ten per kill and the Coal Mine.

Coal is the material that turns ordinary metal into good metal. Its in-game description is direct — "Coal often found in caves and other places. Required to create high quality metal" — and everything it feeds sits on the critical path to endgame gear: Carbon Fiber, Thermal Core and Coralum Ingot all run through it. It is also the awkward kind of material that is easy to gather badly, because the best source is a Pal most players fight once and never return to.

Where to Get It

Pal drops — the reliable route:

PalCoalRate
Blazamut10100%
Blazamut Ryu10100%
Blazamut (Lv80 Awakening)10100%
Blazamut Ryu (Lv80 Awakening)10100%
Pierdon4 – 5100%

Blazamut at 10 per kill is more than double anything else, and the drop is guaranteed at every level including the Level 80 Awakening versions. If you need coal in bulk, this is the answer.

Pierdon is the convenient one, though, and worth a specific mention: it drops Coal at 4 – 5 (100%) and Sulfur at 4 – 5 (100%). Those are the two materials that gate the entire ballistic ammunition chain and the endgame metal chain respectively, from a single target. If you are running any kind of gunpowder economy, Pierdon is already on your route.

Map zones: Desert, Snow and Sakurajima drops all yield coal, matching the description's "caves and other places."

Expeditions: Desert, Forest Hard and Desert Hard expedition treasure boxes contain it — the passive route, since expeditions run while you are doing something else.

The Coal Mine (Technology 37) is the automation answer: 70 Stone, 100 Coal, 30 Paldium Fragment and 10 Ancient Civilization Parts, worked by any Mining Pal.

Note the bootstrap. Like every late mine in Palworld, the Coal Mine costs 100 units of the material it produces. You hand-gather your first hundred — which is ten Blazamut kills — and only then does the structure take over.

What Coal Is For

Card showing the three material chains that Coal feeds.

Coal is an input rather than an end product, and it feeds three chains that matter:

ProductWhy it matters
Carbon FiberFeeds Reinforced Arrow, Advanced Arrow, and the Slider (15) and Sniper II (30) sphere modules
Thermal CoreFeeds Plasma Cartridge, Overheat Rifle Ammo, Charge Rifle Ammo, Rocket Ammo — the energy ammunition family
Coralum IngotThe Advanced Workshop (Technology 62) wants 50; the Ancient Furnace (Technology 66) wants 100

The Thermal Core line is the significant one. Palworld's endgame weapons split into two families: ballistic rounds that consume gunpowder in quantity — Heavy Assault Rifle Ammo needs 10 Gunpowder each — and energy rounds that use none at all. The energy family runs on Bio Battery, Thermal Core, Hexolite and Paloxite, and Thermal Core traces back here.

So if you have committed to energy weapons, coal is a standing requirement rather than a one-off.

Coal is also used directly in the Heater (Technology 17), via Charcoal, and in some weapon and accessory recipes including Blazamut's Talisman. It appears in technology research costs too.

Do not confuse Coal with Charcoal. They are separate materials: Charcoal is 2 Wood → 1 Charcoal at any furnace, and it combines with Sulfur to make Gunpowder. Coal is mined or dropped and cannot be made from wood.

Buying Versus Farming

Card comparing the gold cost of Coal against the effort of farming it.

At a gold value of 200, coal sits in the same bracket as Horn and Bone — cheap enough that buying is a genuine option when you are gold-rich.

    Put it against the alternatives:

  • One Successful Bounty Token converts to 2,000 Gold Coins — enough for ten coal.
  • One Blazamut kill is ten coal, free.
  • The Coal Mine (Technology 37) removes the question permanently, once you have paid its 100-coal entry fee.

The honest recommendation: do not farm coal deliberately in the early game. Take it from Pierdon while you are there for sulfur, take it from Blazamut when you fight one, and build the Coal Mine as soon as Technology 37 is reachable. The bootstrap hundred is ten Blazamut kills or twenty Pierdons — a single session, not a grind.

One efficiency note. If you are farming Pals for coal, the matching drop-rate booster applies. Blazamut is Fire-type, so Penking or Faleris Aqua in your party raises its drops by 40~80% — turning ten coal per kill into something closer to fourteen to eighteen.

Practical tips

  • Blazamut and Blazamut Ryu drop 10 Coal at 100%, at every level including Lv80 Awakening.
  • Pierdon drops Coal and Sulfur, both 4 – 5 at 100% — one target, two bottlenecked materials.
  • The Coal Mine (Tech 37) costs 100 Coal to build — gather the bootstrap first.
  • Coal ≠ Charcoal. Charcoal is 2 Wood at a furnace; coal cannot be made.
  • Carry a Fire drop booster (Penking or Faleris Aqua) when farming Blazamut for +40~80%.
  • At 200 gold it is cheap to buy — one bounty token covers ten.

Running your own Palworld 1.0 server

Coal is the sort of material you want accumulating in the background rather than chasing: a Coal Mine with a Mining Pal on it produces continuously, and expedition boxes arrive while you are doing something else entirely. Neither happens with the game closed. A dedicated Palworld 1.0 server keeps the mine running and the expeditions returning around the clock, supports full crossplay so a group can split the gathering, and protects the stockpile with one-click backups.

Conclusion

Coal is "required to create high quality metal", and it feeds three chains that matter at the top of the game: Carbon Fiber, Thermal Core — which every energy-weapon round runs through — and Coralum Ingot, wanted 100 at a time by the Ancient Furnace. The best drop by a wide margin is Blazamut and Blazamut Ryu at 10 per kill with a 100% rate, while Pierdon at 4 – 5 (100%) is the convenient one because it drops Sulfur at the same rate, covering two bottlenecks in one target. Automate it with the Coal Mine at Technology 37, remembering that — like every late mine — it costs 100 Coal to build. And do not confuse it with Charcoal, which is simply 2 Wood at any furnace.
