Ghornfell: Where Dragonwilds Stops Being a Survival Game and Starts Raiding You

Ghornfell is where enemies start attacking your base rather than waiting for you to find them. Goblin raid parties, base raids and Hunted events are all tuned per-region, and Ghornfell is where they begin to bite. It is also the region that finally gives you iron, silver, gold and blurite — Brynmoor's deposits are mined out — and where General Velgar circles overhead. Here is everything in it, including the raid timings Jagex only published in patch notes.
On sourcing. The details below come from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.
The Three Subregions
Ghornfell is a power level 3–4 region in the north of Ashenfall, described in one line that tells you the shape of it: "Poison lies to its east and storms to its west, and General Velgar circles overhead."
| Subregion | Character |
|---|---|
| Fractured Plains | The central belt, and the acknowledged difficulty step up |
| Stormtouched Highlands | The western, storm-struck highlands |
| Bloodblight Swamp | The eastern, poisoned swamp |
Access improved in a patch, so if you remember Ghornfell being awkward to reach: "Players can access Ghornfell through the eastern side of the Whispering Swamp more easily."
And the region's monster density was reduced — "monsters will spawn less frequently around Ghornfell" — which is worth knowing if you are reading older guides that describe it as relentless.
What It Gives You

| Category | Available |
|---|---|
| Ore nodes | Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, Gold, Blurite |
| Stone | Sandstone Rock, Granite Deposit, Dragon Tooth |
| Trees | Ash, Oak, Anima-Infused Bark |
| Plants | Onion, Dwellberry Bush, Snapdragon, Toadflax |
| Fish | Raw Anchovies, Raw Salmon, Raw Herring |
This is the metal region, and it matters because Brynmoor has none. The starting region's iron "was completely depleted" before the game begins, so iron armour, iron weapons and everything above them start here.
Two of these unlock specific things elsewhere:
- Silver is the gate on the White armour set and the Wolfbane Dagger; gold on the Wild archer set and the Inspiring Amulets.
- Blurite makes the Blurite Crossbow — −25% reload duration at −25% durability — and Enchanted Blurite Bolts for earth magic damage.
Anima-Infused Bark is the Runecrafting and staff material, feeding the Oak Battlestaff and the Anti-dragon Shield.
And Dwellberries are worth a special mention because of what they become: the Dwellberry Infusion grants Quenched — −33% hydration drain — for 600 seconds, double the Redberry version's 300. Ghornfell is where your hydration management gets cheap.
The Garou, and Why You Cannot Bring Six Melee Players

Ghornfell is the garou's region, and it fields the full roster:
| Enemy | Notes |
|---|---|
| Garou Berserker | The red attack is unblockable without Tempest Shield |
| Garou Hunter | Weak to Melee, Air and Stab; resists Magic, Earth and Slash |
| Garou Druid | The caster |
| Garou Thane | Drops A Brutal Bladehead, the Thane's Authority recipe |
| Garou King | The apex of the roster |
Alongside them: wolves and dire wolves, chinchompas, rams, abyssal demons, terrorbirds — and Velgar himself.
The faction is deliberately built so that one combat style cannot answer it. Berserkers fold to Magic, Druids to Ranged and Hunters to Melee — three units, three counters. A six-player group who all built melee will find Ghornfell's camps far harder than a mixed one.
The Garou Hunter is the clearest worked example of the three-axis weakness system. It is weak on combat style (melee), element (air) and damage type (stab) simultaneously — so a stabbing weapon with Enchant Weapon: Air hits all three at once. That combination requires Attack 30, which is a genuine reason to push the skill before clearing the region.
Dire wolves have their own counter: the Wolfbane Dagger, whose recipe comes from a dragonkin effigy in the Vekchenven Kara vault, deals increased damage against wolves.
Raids: The Numbers Jagex Published Once

Ghornfell is where base raids become a real mechanic, and Jagex retuned them in a patch — publishing exact figures in the process.
| Event | Setting | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goblin Raid Parties | Cooldown | 2 in-game days | 4 in-game days |
| Base Raids | Grace period | 9 in-game days | 12 in-game days |
| Base Raids | Chance per event tick | 10% | 5% |
| Base Raids | Cooldown | 2 in-game days | 3.75 in-game days |
| Hunted Events | Chance per event tick | 10% | 5% |
| Hunted Events | Cooldown | 1 in-game day | 2.25 in-game days |
Every one of those changes made raids rarer, roughly halving the frequency across the board.
The grace period is the number to plan around. Twelve in-game days after you establish a base in Ghornfell before a raid can happen at all — which is a meaningful window to get walls up and repair materials stocked.
Three practical consequences:
- Structures have durability and can be destroyed by monsters. Repair with the base material — a square foundation costs one ash log — and repair anything below 100% rather than waiting for visible damage at 50%. Below 1% the structure collapses.
- Hunted is a nighttime state. It "allows the player to be hunted by enemies", and pairs with the fact that higher-starred variants of some creatures only appear at night.
- On a server, raids happen whether or not anyone is watching. A base left through several in-game days of real time can take damage nobody sees — which makes backups before long absences a practical habit rather than a precaution.
Eight quests are based here, including Dog Days, which rewards the Garou highborn's cloak, Granite Mauled for the Granite Maul and its block-breaking Battering Ram special, Heartstrings for the Crystal Bow, Animal Magnetism for Ava's Accumulator, and Cook's Assistant. Cathan is the region's NPC until you slay Velgar, after which the Wise Old Man replaces him.
Practical tips
- Ghornfell is power level 3–4, in three subregions: Fractured Plains, Stormtouched Highlands, Bloodblight Swamp.
- This is where metal starts — copper, tin, iron, silver, gold and blurite.
- Dwellberries give the 600-second Quenched infusion — double the Redberry version.
- Berserkers fold to Magic, Druids to Ranged, Hunters to Melee — bring a mixed group.
- A stabbing weapon with Enchant Weapon: Air hits three Garou Hunter weaknesses at once (Attack 30).
- Base raids have a 12 in-game day grace period, then a 5% chance per event tick.
- Goblin raid cooldown is 4 in-game days; Hunted events, 2.25.
- Repair structures below 100% — they collapse below 1%.
- Cathan is replaced by the Wise Old Man after Velgar dies.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
Ghornfell is where the world starts attacking your base on its own schedule — including during in-game days that pass while nobody is looking. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Ghornfell is Dragonwilds' power level 3–4 region, split into the Fractured Plains, the storm-struck Stormtouched Highlands and the poisoned Bloodblight Swamp, with General Velgar overhead. It is the metal region — copper, tin, iron, silver, gold and blurite, plus granite, sandstone, Dragon Tooth and Anima-Infused Bark — which matters because Brynmoor's iron was depleted before the game begins. Its garou are deliberately designed so no single combat style clears them: Berserkers fold to Magic, Druids to Ranged and Hunters to Melee, and the Garou Hunter is weak on all three axes at once to a stabbing weapon enchanted with Air. It is also where the world starts fighting back on a timer, with base raids gated behind a 12 in-game day grace period and then a 5% chance per event tick on a 3.75-day cooldown, goblin raid parties every 4 in-game days, and Hunted events every 2.25 — all roughly halved from their original tuning. Keep structures repaired above 100%, because anything reaching 1% collapses, and remember that those in-game days keep passing on a server whether anyone is logged in or not.
