Every Shield in Dragonwilds: Thirteen, and They Do Not Add Armour

Dragonwilds shields work nothing like their RuneScape ancestors, and the wiki says so directly: they do not add bonuses to armour or health. Instead they have their own hitsplat when blocking. Read the full table and a second pattern falls out that no guide mentions — block value is determined entirely by power level, and every shield at the same tier blocks exactly the same amount.
Shields Do Not Work Like RuneScape

| Slot | Offhand |
| They allow | Blocking and parrying |
| They do NOT add | Bonuses to armour or health |
| Instead | They have their own hitsplat when blocking |
| Made at | The crafting table or Blacksmith's Bench |
| Repaired | At the bench, or with Magical Mending |
"Their own hitsplat" is the mechanic to understand. A shield is not a passive stat that reduces incoming damage — it is an active object that absorbs a blocked hit and shows its own number. As covered in our combat reading guide, that hitsplat is separate information from the damage you take.
So a shield is a block value, not a stat stick. Comparing shields means comparing block and durability, and nothing else.
Magical Mending repairs them in the field, which is worth knowing on a long expedition — and the Steam achievement Mend it like… asks you to repair three items with one cast, so a party carrying damaged shields is the natural way to earn it.
Block Is Set by Power Level

| Power | Block | Shields at this tier |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 26 | Wooden Shield |
| 2 | 33 | Leather Shield |
| 3 | 39 | Bronze Shield, Anti-Dragon Shield |
| 4 | 46 | Iron Shield, Dragonblight Shield |
| 5 | 52 | Steel Shield, Fallen Hoplite's Aspis, Dragoncurse Shield |
| 6 | 59 | Mithril Shield, Black Shield |
| 7 | 65 | Adamant Shield, TokTz-Ket-Xil |
Block value tracks power level exactly, with no exceptions. Every power-5 shield blocks 52; every power-7 shield blocks 65. The special shields are not better at blocking than the plain metal one at the same tier.
Which means you choose a shield on durability and on its special effect, never on block. That is a genuinely useful simplification, and it is invisible unless you read the whole table at once.
Durability does not follow the same rule. At power 6, the Mithril Shield has 1600 while the Black Shield has 1300 — same block, 23% more durability. At power 6 the Mithril Shield is simply the better object unless you want the Black Shield's effect.
Power levels 4 and 5 all share 1300 durability, so within those tiers the choice is entirely about effects.
What Each One Costs

The plain metal ladder is straightforward: Bronze (8 Bronze Bars, 4 Leather), Iron (8 Iron Bars, 4 Hard Leather, 4 Vault Shards), Steel (10 Steel Bars, 4 Draconic Leather, 6 Vault Shards), Mithril (10 Mithril Bars, 4 Cursed Leather, 18 Infernal Fragments), Adamant (10 Adamant Bars, 4 Scorch Leather, 2 Gypsum Wax).
The specials are where the interesting recipes are:
| Shield | Notable requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-Dragon Shield | 1 Vault Core, 8 Vault Shards | Recipe in the Whispering Swamp vault |
| Dragonblight Shield | 1 Draconic Visage + 1 Anti-Dragon Shield | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Dragoncurse Shield | 1 Undead Draconic Visage + 1 Anti-Dragon Shield + 45 Vault Shards | Withering Heights quest reward |
| Fallen Hoplite's Aspis | 12 Undead Bones | Skeletal Hoplite vestige |
| Black Shield | 2 Demonic Oil | Battle-Scarred Black Metal vestige |
| TokTz-Ket-Xil | 10 Refined Obsidian | Unyielding obsidian construct vestige |
Two shields consume an Anti-Dragon Shield to build. Both the Dragonblight and the Dragoncurse take a completed Anti-Dragon Shield as an ingredient — so build the Anti-Dragon Shield early and expect to build it more than once.
The Dragoncurse Shield's 45 Vault Shards is the largest single shard cost on the list, nearly four times the Dragonblight's 12.
And note what the dragon-named shields do and do not do. As our misreported gear guide covers, the Dragonfire Shield does not have Dragon Breath Resistance despite the name — so do not assume a dragon in the title means dragonfire protection.
Practical tips
- Shields add no armour or health — they block with their own hitsplat.
- Block value is set by power level: 26, 33, 39, 46, 52, 59, 65.
- Every shield at a tier blocks identically — choose on durability and effect.
- At power 6, the Mithril Shield has 1600 durability against the Black Shield's 1300.
- Dragonblight and Dragoncurse both consume an Anti-Dragon Shield to craft.
- The Dragoncurse costs 45 Vault Shards — the largest shard bill in the list.
- Three shields are vestige unlocks: Fallen Hoplite's Aspis, Black, TokTz-Ket-Xil.
- Magical Mending repairs shields in the field.
Running your own Dragonwilds server
Vault Cores, quest rewards and vestige unlocks are all world progress rather than inventory — they only accumulate if the world persists. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall running with automatic updates and one-click backups.
Conclusion
Dragonwilds shields do not add armour or health — they block and parry with their own hitsplat, which makes block value and durability the only stats worth comparing. And block is set entirely by power level: 26, 33, 39, 46, 52, 59 and 65 at tiers one through seven, identically for every shield at that tier. So the choice is never about blocking — it is about durability and special effects, and there the table is not uniform: at power 6 the Mithril Shield carries 1600 durability against the Black Shield's 1300. Several are unlocks rather than crafts: the Anti-Dragon Shield's recipe is in the Whispering Swamp vault, the Dragoncurse is a Withering Heights reward costing 45 Vault Shards, and three more come from vestiges. Note that both the Dragonblight and Dragoncurse consume a completed Anti-Dragon Shield, so build that one early and expect to build it twice.
