Every Cape in Dragonwilds: Skill Capes Are Not Cosmetic, and One You Cannot Get

A player fighting fire-wielding enemies at night in Dragonwilds.

Dragonwilds has forty-nine items in the cape slot, and they split into three groups earned in completely different ways: skill capes at level 99, a large cosmetic set of colour and region capes, and a handful of closed rewards nobody can obtain any more. The single most common misreading is that skill capes are a trophy — they are not. Every one gives defence and a permanent special effect.

Skill Capes Are Not Cosmetic

Card explaining that Dragonwilds skill capes give defence and a special effect.

RequirementLevel 99 in that skill
Crafted atThe mystic forge
Stats+2 melee, +2 ranged and +2 magic defence
PlusA special effect, different on every cape
Trimmed variantRequires more than one skill at 99

The +2 across all three defences is the same on every skill cape, so the choice between them is never about stats — it is entirely about which special effect you want active.

The Trimmed version is a second achievement, not a second item. As in RuneScape and Old School, a trimmed cape is unlocked once you have more than one skill at 99, which makes a trimmed cape a claim about the rest of your account rather than about that one skill.

They moved to the mystic forge in 0.12.0. If a guide tells you to craft one somewhere else, it predates that update.

What Each One Actually Does

Card listing the special effects of Dragonwilds skill capes.

CapeSpecial effect
Cooking CapeYou cannot burn food while wearing it
Artisan CapeRepairing gear costs no resources
Farming CapeActs as an infinite source of plant cure potions
Runecrafting CapeSiphon double the runes from anima vents
Construction CapeSmall chance to not use building materials
Mining CapeSmall chance to instantly finish an ore rock
Woodcutting CapeSmall chance to instantly finish chopping a tree
Attack CapeMelee attacks have a small chance to cost no stamina
Magic CapeThe same, for magic attacks
Ranged CapeThe same, for ranged attacks
Agility CapeJump, dash and evade may cost no stamina
Fishing CapeNot yet documented

Three of these are not "small chance" effects at all. The Cooking, Artisan and Farming capes are unconditional: no burnt food, free repairs, unlimited plant cure. Those three change how you play the skill rather than nudging its numbers.

The Runecrafting cape is the strongest gathering effect in the listdouble runes from every anima vent siphon is a straight doubling of your rune income, which stacks on top of the Runecrafting perks that already improve yield.

A Prayer cape exists but is unreleased, listed on the wiki as trimmed-only and not yet obtainable.

The Cosmetic Half, and the One You Cannot Get

Card describing the cosmetic Dragonwilds capes and the Dragonbane cape.

The larger group is appearance, and it comes in families:

  • Adventurer's Capesnine colours: Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, White, Yellow
  • Desert Capesthe same nine colours again
  • Region capesBloodblight, Fractured, Stormtouched, Whispering, Bramblemead, Dowdun Reach, Umbral Sands
  • One-offs — Community Cape, Saradominist Cloak, Garou Highborn's Cloak, Obsidian Cape, Spectral Chinchompa Cape, Tattered Cape, Pioneer's Cape

Eighteen of the forty-nine are just colours. Two families of nine is a wardrobe, not a progression system.

The Dragonbane Cape is closed content, and doubly so. Its recipe was awarded to players who completed all four weekly challenges during the closed Alpha Test, with the final challenge being to kill Velgar. The recipe requires no materials to craft — but the cape can only be crafted and worn with the Alpha Challenge Cape DLC installed, and that DLC code was emailed only to those players.

So there is no recipe to find. It is worth stating plainly because the item still shows up in lists, and it is exactly the kind of thing players spend an evening hunting. For the record it is a power level 3 item with +2 to each defence — the same defensive line as a skill cape.

Everything else is still earnable — skill capes through levels, region capes through progression, colour capes through ordinary play.

Practical tips

  • Forty-nine cape-slot items in total.
  • Skill capes are not cosmetic+2 to all three defences plus an effect.
  • Cooking, Artisan and Farming capes are unconditional: no burning, free repairs, infinite plant cure.
  • The Runecrafting cape doubles runes from every anima vent siphon.
  • Trimmed capes need more than one skill at 99.
  • Skill capes are made at the mystic forge since 0.12.0.
  • The Dragonbane Cape needs a DLC that was only ever emailed to Alpha players.

Running your own Dragonwilds server

A skill cape is ninety-nine levels of work, which means it is measured in weeks of play on a world that has to still be there. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps your progress persistent with automatic updates and one-click backups, so the grind to 99 is never at the mercy of whose machine was hosting.

Conclusion

Dragonwilds has forty-nine cape-slot items, and the important correction is that skill capes are not trophies. Each requires level 99, is crafted at the mystic forge, and gives +2 melee, ranged and magic defence plus a special effect — with Cooking (cannot burn food), Artisan (repairs cost nothing) and Farming (infinite plant cure) being unconditional, and the Runecrafting cape doubling runes from every anima vent siphon. Trimmed variants require more than one skill at 99. The cosmetic half is large but simple: nine Adventurer's colours, the same nine Desert colours, seven region capes and a handful of one-offs. And the Dragonbane Cape is closed twice over — an Alpha Test reward for all four weekly challenges, the last being to kill Velgar, and craftable only with the Alpha Challenge Cape DLC that was emailed to those players. There is no recipe to hunt.
