Dragon Slayer in Dragonwilds: The Full Walkthrough, Materials First

Dragon Slayer sends you to two opposite corners of Ghornfell for two items, and you need an iron pickaxe for one and an iron logging axe for the other. Turning up without them means walking the whole route twice. Dragonwilds' fifth primary quest is the first chapter of Kuldra's Saga and the one that opens the game up — so here is the whole thing in order, with the shopping list at the front where it belongs.
On sourcing. The walkthrough below comes from the community RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki, and can change with any patch.
Bring This
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| 1 antlers | The Wise Old Man's locator spell |
| 23 ash logs | Building the shelter |
| 1 coarse animal fur | Shelter |
| 1 dragon tooth | The challenge horn — needs an iron pickaxe |
| 1 bloodwood sap | The challenge horn — needs an iron logging axe |
| 5 bronze bar | The challenge horn |
| A ranged or magic weapon | For killing deer, which run |
| Antipoison potions | Velgar's entire moveset |
| Good armour, weapons and food | Multiple goblins, garou, rats and vault guardians along the way |
The two tool requirements are the ones that catch people. The dragon tooth is mined from a dragon skull in the Stormtouched Highlands and needs an iron pickaxe; the bloodwood sap is harvested from a bloodwood tree in Bloodblight Swamp and needs an iron logging axe. Neither is optional and neither can be improvised — take both before you set out.
And take a ranged or magic weapon for the deer specifically. They "tend to run away", which makes melee a chase rather than a hunt.
Parts I and II: Find Cathan

Speak to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village to start.
First he wants you sheltered. You need to build and claim a bed roll, and the claim only works if the shelter has a foundation, three walls and a ceiling. A bed roll under the sky will not register — that is the most common early blocker.
Then the antlers. He casts a locator spell for the missing adventurer Cathan, and needs antlers for it. Hunt deer in the valley with your ranged or magic weapon.
The spell points you to the Keep of Blue Flames — which, the wiki notes, "will look eerily similar to Lumbridge Castle, but with Bandosian banners flying." It is full of goblins, so bring food.
Cathan's Journal is at the top of the castle, next to a loot chest. Reading it sends you to the Whispering Swamp to find a "blue-flame door" — which is the dragonkin vault Vertentis Kara.
Go through the vault and speak to Spitfoot at the end. He explains Cathan's journey, his betrayal, and his intention to head to Ghornfell.
Take that back to the Wise Old Man, who sends you on to the Fractured Plains and, from there, to Velgar's Rise — the tower at the heart of the region.
Note what you have collected on the way. The Vertentis Kara vault is also where the Anti-dragon Shield recipe unlocks, and that shield is the root of the whole dragon-shield line — Anti-dragon, Dragonblight, Dragoncurse, Dragonfire, each built from the last plus a Draconic Visage. Do not skip its chests.
Part III: The Challenge Horn

At the Rise you meet Cathan's ghost. He explains that the Garou mobbed him, dragged him to the tower and sacrificed him in front of Velgar — and gives you the recipe for a challenge horn that summons Velgar to his arena.
The two materials are in opposite subregions:
| Material | Where | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon tooth | Stormtouched Highlands — past the skeleton the Garou use as a home, on the western side; mine the teeth from a dragon skull | Iron pickaxe |
| Bloodwood sap | Bloodblight Swamp — the castle at the most southern point; the bloodwood tree is inside, with some Garou | Iron logging axe |
Combine them with 5 bronze bars to craft the horn.
A warning about the Highlands leg. Every garou in the Stormtouched Highlands is one power level above its counterparts elsewhere in Ghornfell — power level 4 rather than 3, with Berserkers and Druids at 405 health instead of 292 and Hunters at 360 instead of 260. The dragon tooth trip is meaningfully harder than the sap trip, so do it with a full kit.
Part IV: Velgar

Enter Velgar's Rise with your best gear, antipoison and food. The top of the tower is a triangle with a pedestal at the centre. Place the horn on the dragonkin altar and Velgar arrives at one corner.
His moveset:
- Poison spray and poison puddle bombs.
- A two-leg stomp, sending spikes in your direction.
- If you close to melee: a one-leg stomp with the nearer leg, a forward bite, and a sideways head swing.
The crucial timing note: "All of his attacks are delayed, so you can prepare and dodge, and between each attack he will wait a bit." This is a patient fight, not a frantic one.
The phase structure is geometric and predictable:
| At | What happens |
|---|---|
| −1/4 health | Flies away, repeats the poison puddle bomb attack several times, lands on the next corner clockwise |
| −1/2 health | Same again, next corner clockwise |
| −3/4 health | Same again, back to the original corner |
In the second phase he chains multiple attacks before pausing, but the attacks themselves do not change.
So the fight is: three flights, three corner moves, all clockwise. Knowing the rotation means you can be standing in the right place before he lands.
Two things about the poison. Velgar is immune to poison himself, so poisoned ammunition is wasted — and his own poison drains around 4 health per second until cured, which is why Antipoison (which removes stacks) matters more than Fungal Fortitude food (which only slows the gauge). He is also immune to Burning and to stagger, so fire arrows and the parry-stagger loop both lose their point.
When he dies you get his head. Leave the tower, speak to the Wise Old Man — who has replaced Cathan's ghost — and hand it over.
What the quest gives you: completion of the first arc of Kuldra's Saga, the Dragonblight Shield recipe, the Tome of the Dragon Slayer, and the Dragon Slayer achievement. It is also the prerequisite for reaching Fellhollow, alongside partially starting Withering Heights.
Practical tips
- Take an iron pickaxe AND an iron logging axe before leaving for Ghornfell.
- The shelter needs a foundation, three walls and a ceiling to claim a bed roll.
- Bring a ranged or magic weapon for the deer — they run.
- The blue-flame door is the Vertentis Kara vault; loot it for the Anti-dragon Shield recipe.
- Dragon tooth: Stormtouched Highlands, western side, from a dragon skull.
- Bloodwood sap: Bloodblight Swamp, the southernmost castle.
- Highlands garou are a power level higher than the rest of Ghornfell.
- Velgar's attacks are all delayed — dodge on the tell, do not panic.
- He moves clockwise around a triangle at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 health.
Running your own RuneScape: Dragonwilds server
Dragon Slayer crosses three regions and usually takes more than one evening — which only works on a world that is still there when everyone logs back in. A gamever Dragonwilds server keeps Ashenfall available around the clock for up to six players, updates automatically so client and server versions never drift, and takes one-click backups before disruptive changes.
Conclusion
Dragon Slayer is Dragonwilds' fifth primary quest and the opening chapter of Kuldra's Saga. It starts with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village, who wants a claimed shelter — foundation, three walls and a ceiling — and antlers for a locator spell, then routes you through the Keep of Blue Flames for Cathan's Journal, the Vertentis Kara vault behind the blue-flame door in the Whispering Swamp, and on to Velgar's Rise in the Fractured Plains. There Cathan's ghost hands over the challenge horn recipe, whose two materials sit at opposite ends of Ghornfell: a dragon tooth from a skull in the Stormtouched Highlands needing an iron pickaxe, and bloodwood sap from the southernmost castle in Bloodblight Swamp needing an iron logging axe — take both tools with you or walk it twice. The fight itself is patient rather than frantic: all of Velgar's attacks are delayed, and he flies off at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 health, landing each time on the next corner clockwise of a triangular arena. He is immune to poison, Burning and stagger, so bring Antipoison to clear the stacks his breath applies at roughly 4 health per second — and leave the poisoned arrows at home.
