    Ashwood is the surprise. The wiki is explicit: Scorched Trees "can be chopped with a stone axe". A level-one tool works on the endgame biome's timber. You do not need a Black metal axe for Ashwood the way you do for Yggdrasil wood.

 

    Grausten is not mined. It comes from destroying Ashlands ruins or rock formations — demolition rather than a pickaxe on a deposit. That distinction matters when you are looking for it: you are looking for structures, not veins.

 

    So neither is tool-gated. The gate is entirely access to the biome, which as our ships guide covers means a Drakkar — the only hull that survives Ashlands boiling water — or a Portal stone already placed.

 

Why That Matters

 

 

    A stone axe cutting endgame timber is genuinely unusual for Valheim. Every other wood tier in the game is gated: Finewood needs bronze, Ancient bark needs bronze, Yggdrasil wood needs a Black metal axe. Ashwood needs nothing.

 

    Which means your first Ashlands trip can be a materials trip. You do not need to complete a tool progression first — if you can survive the biome and get the wood home, you can start building with it.

 

    Grausten's demolition sourcing has a similar effect. Destroying ruins is something you will be doing anyway while clearing Charred Fortresses — whose gates have 6,000 HP against pillars at 1 — so Grausten accumulates as a side effect of the content you are already running.

 

    Both are building materials rather than crafting ones. They unlock a new architectural style, in the same way that Tar unlocks the entire Darkwood set — so what you get for the trip is aesthetics and structural options, not weapons.

 

    Which is worth knowing before you plan the expedition. If you are going to the Ashlands for gear, Ashwood and Grausten are not why. If you are going to rebuild your hall in a new style, they are the whole point.

 

Getting Them Home

 

 

    Only the Drakkar survives Ashlands water. At 3,000 hull and 32 cargo slots it is the only boat that can traverse the biome's boiling water without taking damage, and 32 slots is the largest cargo hold in the game.

 

    Building materials are bulk goods, which makes cargo capacity the binding constraint on an Ashlands construction project. One Drakkar run is what a rebuild looks like.

    So the Portal stone should be your first Ashlands project, not your last. Every trip after it costs nothing; every trip before it costs a Drakkar voyage each way.

 

    Plan the order accordingly: get in, place a Portal stone, then gather at leisure. Gathering first and hauling by boat is the expensive version of the same afternoon.

 

    And note that neither material is on the no-teleport list — unlike ore and metal. So once a portal is up, Ashwood and Grausten move freely, and even an ordinary portal handles them.
