Ascension Cores in Dragonwilds: 99 Shards Each, and the Power Level 7 Trap

Card explaining how ascension shards become cores and upgrade weapons in Dragonwilds.

Ascension Cores are how a masterwork weapon in Dragonwilds climbs from Power Level 4 to Power Level 7 — and as the battlestaff numbers show, that climb matters more than which weapon you picked. Each core costs 99 Ascension Shards, which is exactly one full inventory stack. There is also a trap in this system right now: the Power Level 7 core is not supposed to be craftable, the recipe is in the game by mistake, and Jagex have warned that chasing it may corrupt your save once it is patched out on 15 September 2026.

How Ascension Works

Each core moves a weapon exactly one rung, and you cannot skip one. A Power Level 4 core upgrades an item to Power Level 4; a Power Level 5 core takes it from 4 to 5, and so on. Taking a weapon from its crafted tier to the top means one core of every tier above it.

Both shards and cores exist at all four tiers, and they are not interchangeable — a Power Level 6 shard only ever makes a Power Level 6 core.

This is what makes the ascension ladder worth planning around. The Necromancer's Staff reaches 8.8 rune damage at PL7 and the Staff of Light 8.7, both above the 8.4 that natively-Power-Level-7 weapons are stuck at. Ascending the right item beats crafting the obvious one — but it means paying the core bill four times over.

Every Core Recipe

All four are crafted at the Mystic Forge:

CoreShardsBarLeatherCloth
Power Level 499 × PL4 shardIron Bar ×10Dire Wolf Leather ×10Padded Cloth ×10
Power Level 599 × PL5 shardSteel Bar ×10Draconic Leather ×10Fine Cloth ×10
Power Level 699 × PL6 shardMithril Bar ×10Cursed Leather ×10Mystic Cloth ×10
Power Level 799 × PL7 shardAdamant Bar ×10Scorch Leather ×10Infinity Cloth ×10

Ninety-nine shards is the number to internalise. A shard stack caps at 99, so one full stack makes exactly one core — a clean unit of progress, and a large one. Every tier costs the same shard count; only the bar, leather and cloth climb with the tier.

The supporting materials are a straight metal ladder — Iron, Steel, Mithril, Adamant — paired with the leather and cloth of the same era. If you are already geared for the tier, you have these; the shards are the whole cost in practice.

Budget backwards from the target. Taking a Power Level 3 staff to Power Level 7 needs a core at 4, 5, 6 and 7 — 396 shards across four different shard types, plus forty bars, forty leather and forty cloth. That is a project, not an errand, and it is why the choice of which weapon to ascend deserves the thought.

Where Shards Come From

Card showing where ascension shards and cores drop in Dragonwilds.

There are two routes, and they answer different problems:

  • Mini-bosses drop shards. Red, green and blue dragons are the standard farm for most core tiers. This is the grind route — 99 shards per core.
  • The Nightmare Crucible drops finished cores. These are instances in Umbral Sands, and completing one rewards a core outright, skipping the 99-shard farm entirely.

For the Power Level 7 core, the Crucible is not merely faster — it is the only intended source. Jagex designed the top core to be Crucible-only. Every other tier can be crafted or won; PL7 was meant to be won.

Which makes the Crucible the efficient play at every tier, not just the top one. A single completed instance replaces a stack of 99 shards, so if you can clear it, farming dragons for shards is the fallback rather than the plan.

The Power Level 7 Trap

Card warning about the Power Level 7 ascension shard bug in Dragonwilds.

The Power Level 7 shard and its core recipe are in the game by mistake. The community wiki records this as a known issue, sourced to Mod Doom on 29 July 2026, and the developers have said they will remove the recipe in the Rage of Kuldra update — which ships on 15 September 2026.

Right now there is a loophole. Power Level 7 shards can be obtained from gold reward packs on the Lava Fields agility course. That is also flagged as a known issue.

The warning is the part that matters, and it is Jagex's own. Mod Doom's stated reasoning, on 31 July 2026, is that players who obtain items that are broken or incomplete have historically found that once those items are patched out entirely, their saves become corrupt and unusable — and that the studio would rather not introduce that risk.

So the practical advice is blunt: do not stockpile Power Level 7 shards, and do not craft a Power Level 7 core from them. The reward is a single weapon tier you can get legitimately from the Nightmare Crucible. The downside is a save that may not open after 15 September. That is a bad trade at any odds.

Back up regardless. A 1.0 release is the most disruptive moment a save ever goes through, and this one also brings console and portable platforms onto the same worlds. On managed hosting a backup is one click; self-hosting, copy your save files out of RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames before you patch. If something does go wrong on 15 September, a backup taken on the 14th is the difference between a rollback and a restart.

And note what is not affected. Power Level 4, 5 and 6 shards and cores are working as intended. Nothing here is a reason to stop ascending — only a reason to stop at 6 unless your Power Level 7 core came from the Crucible.

Practical tips

  • 99 shards per core — exactly one full stack, at every tier.
  • Cores move an item one rung. PL3 to PL7 needs four cores and 396 shards.
  • The Nightmare Crucible drops finished cores, replacing a 99-shard farm each time.
  • The PL7 core is Crucible-only by design. The craftable version is a bug.
  • Do not farm PL7 shards from Lava Fields gold packs — Jagex warn of save corruption once patched.
  • Back up before 15 September, whatever you have been doing.

Running your own Dragonwilds server

A version transition is exactly when backups stop being theoretical, and 1.0 lands on 15 September. On a gamever Dragonwilds server a backup is one click and happens automatically before updates, so a bad patch day is a rollback rather than a lost character — which matters more than usual this month, given the studio's own warning about items being removed from saves. The world also stays live between sessions, so Crucible runs and dragon farms happen when your group is free rather than when the host is online.

Conclusion

Ascension in Dragonwilds runs on Ascension Shards → Ascension Cores → one Power Level per core, all crafted at the Mystic Forge for 40 Artisan xp. Every core costs 99 shards — one full stack — plus ten each of the tier's bar, leather and cloth, climbing Iron → Steel → Mithril → Adamant. Shards come from red, green and blue dragon mini-bosses; finished cores come from Nightmare Crucible instances in Umbral Sands, which is by far the better route and the only intended source of the Power Level 7 core. The craftable PL7 recipe is a known bug scheduled for removal in Rage of Kuldra on 15 September 2026, and Jagex have specifically warned that items patched out of a save have corrupted saves before — so leave the Lava Fields gold-pack loophole alone, ascend to Power Level 6 freely, and take your backup before the 1.0 patch lands.
