Applied Handbooks in Palworld: The Only Way to Permanently Raise Work Suitability

Four of Palworld's twelve Applied Handbooks shown as in-game items.

A Pal's work suitability looks like a fixed property — the Pal you caught has Mining Lv5 and that is that. It is not fixed. Twelve Legendary consumables, one for each of the twelve job types, permanently raise a Pal's affinity for that job by +1 when the Pal reads one. They come from raid bosses, from fixed Ancient Ruin chests you can walk to right now, and from a merchant who sells all twelve at a flat price. Most players never find them, partly because the one for Farming is not called the Farming handbook.

All Twelve Applied Handbooks

Every job type has exactly one book:

HandbookRaises
Applied Kindling Handbook IKindling +1
Applied Watering Handbook IWatering +1
Applied Planting Handbook IPlanting +1
Applied Generating Electricity Handbook IGenerating Electricity +1
Applied Handiwork Handbook IHandiwork +1
Applied Gathering Handbook IGathering +1
Applied Lumbering Handbook ILumbering +1
Applied Mining Handbook IMining +1
Applied Medicine Production Handbook IMedicine Production +1
Applied Cooling Handbook ICooling +1
Applied Transporting Handbook ITransporting +1
Applied Ranching Handbook IFarming +1

That last row is the trap. The book that raises Farming is named Applied Ranching Handbook I — the game's internal name for the job leaked into the item name. Search your inventory or a wiki for "Farming Handbook" and you will conclude it does not exist. Its own description confirms the effect: "increases their Farming affinity by +1".

All twelve share the same profile: Legendary rarity, weight 1, stack limit 9999, and a sell value of only 10 Gold Coins — so never sell one by accident while clearing your inventory.

The important limit: work suitability caps at Lv8. A handbook fed to a Pal already at Lv8 in that job does nothing. These books exist to lift a Lv7 to Lv8, or to drag a mid-tier worker up a rung — not to build something beyond the ceiling.

The Guaranteed Ancient Ruin for Each

This is the part worth acting on today. Eleven of the twelve handbooks have exactly one Ancient Ruin that drops them at 100% — a fixed location, a guaranteed book:

Farming is the exception twice over — the odd name and the only job with no guaranteed ruin. Its best fixed source is an enemy camp objective in the volcano region at roughly 60%, which makes the Farming book the hardest of the twelve to acquire deliberately.

Five handbooks also drop from a named mission at 100%, which is worth knowing because you may already have completed them:

  • Watering — mission Panthalus
  • Handiwork — mission Prove the Legend!
  • Gathering — mission Give a Fuack
  • Mining — mission Metal on Your Mind
  • Cooling — mission Lock In

Practical reading of the table: a Handiwork and a Mining book are a short trip each. Both sit at fixed coordinates, both are 100%, and Handiwork in particular is the job that gates the most stations at your base.

Raid Bosses Drop Them at 33.3%

Beyond the fixed ruins, raid bosses are the repeatable source. Each drops a set of three at 33.3%:

Raid bossHandbooks it drops
HartalisKing of SalvationKindling, Watering, Planting
XenolordInvader from SpaceGenerating Electricity, Handiwork, Cooling
Moon LordPlanting, Handiwork, Gathering
Blazamut RyuIncarnation of the Eternal FlameGathering, Lumbering, Mining
Bellanoir / Bellanoir LiberoMedicine Production, Transporting, Farming

The Ultra versions of each raid drop two books instead of one, at the same 33.3% rate — so an Ultra clear is worth exactly double on this line of loot, with no change in odds.

Note the overlaps. Planting comes from both Hartalis and Moon Lord; Handiwork from both Xenolord and Moon Lord; Gathering from both Moon Lord and Blazamut Ryu. Moon Lord is the most efficient single target for this purpose, because all three of its books are also on someone else's table — meaning whichever raid you are already running, you are probably covered.

And Bellanoir is the only route to the Farming book from a raid, which reinforces the point above: Farming is the awkward one.

Handbooks also appear from the Wandering Merchant, from treasure-map chests and regional supply chests at low single-digit rates, and from the Arrogant Pal Critic in exchange for showing off particular Pals.

Who to Feed Them To

Card explaining which Pals benefit most from an Applied Handbook in Palworld.

Because the cap is Lv8, a handbook is a targeting decision, not a stat dump.

Never feed one to a Pal already at Lv8 in that job. There is nothing above Lv8, so the book is simply consumed.

The best target is a Lv7 specialist in a job you are short on. Lifting Lv7 to Lv8 both speeds the work and, for several high-tier stations, is the difference between a Pal that can operate the station and one that cannot — which is worth far more than the incremental speed.

The second-best target is a Pal whose other jobs you do not want. Palworld assigns base work by suitability, so a Pal good at four things will wander between four stations. Raising a narrow specialist keeps the assignment predictable; raising a generalist makes its thrashing worse. This is the same logic that makes single-job Pals so valuable at a busy base.

Think about which jobs actually bottleneck you. Handiwork and Transporting are the two that touch nearly every station in a base, so a +1 there is felt everywhere. Kindling gates the high-tier cooking and smelting stations. Medicine Production matters only if you are running a base big enough for injuries to be routine.

On buying them: the Medal Merchant sells all twelve at 300 Dog Coin each, which makes this the only unlimited supply — ruins and missions each give one, and raids are RNG. For scale, 350 Dog Coin unlocks both of your extra accessory slots, which remains the strongest single Dog Coin purchase in the game. But once those slots are bought, handbooks are the best thing on that shelf, and a permanent +1 to a bottleneck job is better value than most of the fruit and elixirs sold alongside them at 200.

Practical tips

  • Twelve handbooks, one per job, each a permanent +1 work suitability for the Pal that reads it.
  • The Farming book is called Applied Ranching Handbook I. Searching for "Farming" finds nothing.
  • Eleven have a 100% Ancient Ruin. Handiwork sits at −568, 349, Mining at −463, −1458.
  • Never use one on a Lv8 Pal — Lv8 is the ceiling and the book is wasted.
  • Ultra raids drop two books instead of one at the same 33.3% rate.
  • The Medal Merchant sells every handbook at 300 Dog Coin — the only unlimited source.

Running your own Palworld 1.0 server

Raid bosses are the repeatable source for these books, and raids are group content that works far better when the world does not depend on one person being online. A dedicated Palworld 1.0 server keeps your raid schedule yours — summon when the group is ready, not when the host logs in — while your base keeps producing between attempts. Full crossplay lets everyone join whatever they play on, and one-click backups protect a roster you have spent Legendary consumables on.

Conclusion

Work suitability in Palworld is not fixed. Twelve Applied Handbooks — one per job type — permanently raise a Pal's affinity by +1, and they are far easier to get than their Legendary rarity suggests: eleven of the twelve drop at 100% from a specific Ancient Ruin you can fly to today, five also come free from a named story mission, five raid bosses drop sets of three at 33.3% (doubled to two books on Ultra clears), and the Medal Merchant sells all twelve at 300 Dog Coin with no limit. Two details cause most of the confusion: the Farming book is named Applied Ranching Handbook I, and Farming is the only job with no guaranteed ruin. Spend the books on Lv7 specialists in bottleneck jobs — Handiwork and Transporting above all — and never on a Pal already at Lv8, because Lv8 is the ceiling and the book is simply consumed.
