Wolves and Drakes in Valheim: One You Tame, One That Is Immune to Stagger

The Mountain's two signature creatures sit at almost the same health — Wolf 80, Drake 100 — and are opposites in every way that matters. The Wolf can be tamed, bred and ridden into your service. The Drake flies, spits 90 Frost from range, and is immune to stagger, Frost and Spirit all at once.

Side by Side

| Wolf | Drake | |
|---|---|---|
| Health 0★ / 1★ / 2★ | 80 / 160 / 240 | 100 |
| Weak to | — | Fire |
| Immune to | Spirit | Frost, Spirit, Stagger |
| Stagger threshold | 50% | Immune |
| Attack | 70 Slash | 90 Frost (spit) |
| Tameable | Yes | No |
| Drops | Wolf meat, Wolf fang, Wolf pelt, trophy | Freeze gland, trophy 10% |
The Wolf publishes no weakness and no resistance at all beyond Spirit immunity — like the Fulings, it takes normal damage from everything. What makes wolves dangerous is not defence, it is that they come in packs and hit for 70 Slash each.
The Drake's immunity line is the fight. Frost immunity means the Mountain's own element does nothing to it. Stagger immunity means there is no interrupt. And it attacks from the air at range, so closing the distance is not straightforward either.
The Drake Is a Ranged Frost Attacker That Ignores Frost

The Drake spits for 90 Frost, and Frost damage in Valheim also applies the Freezing effect, which slows you. On a mountain where you are already managing cold, that is a compounding problem rather than a flat 90 damage.
Its counter is Fire, its only published weakness — and Fire is convenient on the Mountain for other reasons anyway, since the biome punishes you for being cold.
What does not work:
- Frost. Immune. Frostner's frost half is dead against a Drake.
- Spirit. Immune. The other half of Frostner is dead too.
- Stagger. Immune. There is no window, no knockback, no punish.
Between Frost and Spirit immunity, a Frostner user loses 60 of its 95 damage against a Drake, leaving only its 35 Blunt. That makes the Mountain's default weapon a poor choice against one of the Mountain's two main enemies.
Drakes are the only source of Freeze glands, which make Frost Resistance Mead — the item that makes the Mountain survivable in the first place. That is Valheim's usual loop: the thing that kills you drops the thing that stops it killing you.
The Wolf Is a Project
Wolves have 80, 160 and 240 health across the star tiers and hit for 70 Slash. Their 50% stagger threshold — 40 damage at zero stars — makes them genuinely interruptible, which is the main reason a pack is survivable at all.
Their real significance is that they are tameable and breedable, and tamed wolves are the best combat companion in the game before the Mistlands. A pack of tamed 2★ wolves at 240 health each is a serious defensive asset for a base.
The drop table rewards the star tiers heavily:
| Drop | 0★ | 1★ | 2★ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf fang | 40% | 2 (80%) | 4 |
A 2★ wolf gives four fangs guaranteed, against a 40% chance of one from a base wolf — a tenfold swing. Wolf fangs make the Fang spear, Drake helmet and Wolf armour, so starred wolves are worth seeking out specifically.
Compare that with the Fenring's guaranteed single fang and the Ulv's 50% covered elsewhere: a 2★ wolf beats both by a wide margin as a fang source, if you can find one.
Fighting Both on the Same Mountain

- Bring Fire for Drakes. It is their only weakness and the only element they do not ignore.
- Bring anything for Wolves. No weakness, no resistance — damage per second is all that matters.
- Do not lean on Frostner. Drakes are immune to both its Frost and its Spirit components, leaving 35 Blunt out of 95.
- Stagger wolves, not drakes. 40 damage staggers a base wolf; a Drake cannot be staggered at all.
- Shoot Drakes down. They attack from the air, so a bow is the practical answer even without an elemental component.
- Hunt 2★ wolves for fangs. Four guaranteed against a 40% chance of one.
- Collect Freeze glands. They are Drake-exclusive, and Frost Resistance Mead is what makes the biome viable.

A wolf pen full of bred 2★ wolves is a long project, and long projects only survive on a world that keeps running. A gamever Valheim server keeps it persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.
Conclusion
The Mountain's two main creatures sit close on health and nowhere else. The Wolf has 80 / 160 / 240 health, hits for 70 Slash, publishes no weakness and no resistance, and staggers at 50% — which is 40 damage at base and the reason packs are survivable. It is tameable and breedable, making a pack of 2★ wolves at 240 health each the best pre-Mistlands defensive asset in the game, and its fang drop scales hard: 40% for one at zero stars against four guaranteed at two stars, comfortably better than a Fenring's guaranteed single or an Ulv's coin flip. The Drake has 100 health, spits 90 Frost from the air, and is immune to Frost, Spirit and stagger — which kills 60 of Frostner's 95 damage and removes any interrupt from the fight. Its only weakness is Fire, and it is the only source of Freeze glands, the ingredient in the Frost Resistance Mead that makes the Mountain survivable at all.
