Wisps and the Wisplight in Valheim: One Silver, One Wisp, Ten Metres of Sight

A wisp fountain at night in Valheim.

The Mistlands is unplayable without the Wisplight, and the Wisplight costs one Silver and one Wisp. That is the whole recipe. It clears the mist in a 10-metre radius, it weighs 0.1, it has 0 armour, and it is unlocked the moment you pick up your first Wisp — which makes it the largest quality-of-life-per-material ratio in Valheim.

The Wisplight

It is unlocked after acquiring a Wisp for the first time, so there is no technology gate beyond finding one.

Crafting level 1 means an ordinary Workbench — no upgrades, no Forge, no Artisan table. If you have Silver and a Wisp you can make it wherever you are standing.

Its internal name is Demister, which describes the function better than the display name does.

The Orb Lags Behind You

The one behavioural quirk worth knowing before you rely on it:

The orb loosely follows the player and can briefly leave the player in a fog if they change direction too quickly.

That is a real tactical consideration in the Mistlands, not a cosmetic note. A sudden turn — dodging a Seeker, backing off a Gjall — can put you outside your own light for a moment, in the biome where visibility is the entire problem.

    Two habits follow:

  • Turn deliberately when you can. Smooth movement keeps the orb with you.
  • Do not sprint-turn in a fight. The moment you most need to see is the moment a hard direction change removes the light.

The accessory slot is the cost. At 0 armour, the Wisplight competes with the Megingjord and the Wishbone for the same slot — so you are choosing between carrying capacity, buried-treasure detection, and being able to see. In the Mistlands that is not a real choice.

Where Wisps Come From

Card explaining that Valheim wisps are collected at fountains, at night.

Wisps are collected around Wisp fountains at night, which is the constraint. A fountain in daylight gives you nothing, and Valheim's night is 9 minutes against a 21-minute day — so roughly 30% of the cycle is collection time.

Plan the trip for nightfall rather than arriving and waiting, the same way Restless Ghosts in other games gate on darkness.

A Wisp fountain costs Ten Stone and one Torn Spirit to build, which puts a collection point wherever you want it — and since Torn Spirits come from Yagluth at 3 per kill, a single boss fight supplies three fountains.

What Else Wisps Make

Wisps have three uses beyond the Wisplight:

UseItem
BuildingWisp torch
CraftingWisplight
CraftingMistwalker

Mistwalker is the notable one. It is the Mistlands sword — Slash 75/75, Frost 40/58, Spirit 0/15 — and it is the only sword in the game whose slash does not scale with upgrades. All of its growth is in the Frost component, which makes it a specialist rather than a straight upgrade over the Black metal sword's 95 slash.

The Wisp torch is the building version of the same idea: permanent light placed in the world rather than carried.

Getting Into the Mistlands

Card summarising what you need before entering the Valheim Mistlands.

    The practical checklist, in order:

  1. Beat Yagluth for Torn Spirits — three per kill.
  2. Build a Wisp fountain from Ten Stone and one Torn Spirit.
  3. Come back at night and collect Wisps. Night is 9 of every 30 minutes.
  4. Bring Silver, which needs an Iron pickaxe and the Mountain.
  5. Craft the Wisplight at any Workbench — one Silver, one Wisp.
  6. Accept the accessory slot cost. No Megingjord and no Wishbone while it is equipped.

Do not enter the Mistlands without it. The biome's creatures — Seekers resisting all three physical damage types, Gjall dropping three Ticks every 50 seconds, Dvergr at 350 health with no weakness — are difficult enough with visibility.

Running your own Valheim server

Wisp collection is gated on nightfall, which means it is gated on a world whose clock is still running when you log in. A gamever Valheim server keeps it persistent for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.

Conclusion

The Wisplight costs one Silver and one Wisp at a crafting level 1 Workbench, weighs 0.1, gives 0 armour, and clears the Mist in a 10-metre radius — the best quality-of-life-per-material ratio in Valheim, and unlocked the moment you pick up your first Wisp. Its internal name, Demister, describes it better than the display name. The behavioural catch is that the orb loosely follows you and can briefly leave you in fog if you change direction too quickly, which matters most in exactly the fights where you need to see — so turn deliberately. Wisps come from Wisp fountains, at night only, and Valheim's night is 9 minutes of every 30, so the trip has to be timed rather than waited out; a fountain costs Ten Stone and one Torn Spirit, and Yagluth drops three Torn Spirits per kill. Beyond the Wisplight, wisps build the Wisp torch and craft Mistwalker, the Mistlands sword whose slash is a flat 75/75 with all its scaling in the Frost 40/58 component.
