Valheim Loot Chests: What Is Actually in Them, Biome by Biome

Valheim's loot chests are placed at world creation, not generated when you open them — and they roll 2–3 items with a hard rule: never more than one of each. That single constraint is why a Meadows chest can never hand you two stacks of arrows, and why the value of a chest depends far more on its table size than on luck. Here is what each biome's chests contain, and which ones are worth a detour.
On sourcing. Iron Gate do not publish loot tables. The figures below come from the community Valheim wiki, and can change with any patch.
How Chests Work
A loot chest "functions like a regular chest, but is spawned at World Creation at a certain point of interest and contains loot appropriate to the biome where it appears."
Two properties follow:
- The contents are decided by biome and location type, not by your progression.
- Some chests carry treasure for bartering with Haldor — amber, amber pearls, rubies, silver necklaces and coins are all trader currency rather than crafting material.
The roll structure is consistent across most tables: "2–3 loot (max one of each)." Each item in the table has an equal chance, and duplicates are impossible.
That makes table size the real quality signal. A six-item table at 16.7% each gives you 2–3 different things from six possibilities; a three-item table at 33.3% will hand you most of its contents every time.
The Early Tables

Meadows / Black Forest chest — 6 items at 16.7% each:
| Amount | Item |
|---|---|
| 1 | Amber |
| 5–15 | Coins |
| 1–3 | Feathers |
| 2–4 | Flint |
| 10–20 | Flinthead arrows |
| 1 | Torch |
Black Forest chest — 5 items at 20% each: 1–2 Amber, 5–30 Coins, 2–4 Feathers, 5–10 Flinthead arrows, 1 Wooden spear.
Combat Ruins chest — only 3 items at 33.3%: 1 Wooden mace, 1–3 Feathers, 1 Torch. The smallest table in the early game, and the least worth a detour.
Viking Graveyard chest — 7 items at 14.3% each, and a much better table: 1–2 Amber pearls, 5–15 Coins, 10–15 Fire arrows, 1–3 Rubies, 1 Silver necklace, 1 Wooden knife, 1 Wooden axe.
Note what the graveyard adds: rubies, amber pearls and a silver necklace — three trader-value items in one table. Graveyards are the best early-game money.
Black Forest barrels are a materials table rather than a treasure one — 8 items at 12.5%: Blueberries, Deer hide, Flint, Coal, Greydwarf eyes, Resin, Leather scraps and Tin ore.
Troll Caves and Beyond

Troll caves are the first location with a variable chest count, and the odds are worth knowing before you commit to clearing one:
| Chests | Chance |
|---|---|
| 0 | 30% |
| 1 | 28% |
| 2 | 42% |
Almost a third of troll caves contain no chest at all. Two is the most likely outcome, but "no reward" is a real result — which reframes troll caves as a troll hide run with a chest bonus rather than a treasure run.
Their table is 7 items at 14.3%, rolling 3–5 — a wider roll than the early chests: 10–15 Bone fragments, 20–50 Coins, 2–4 Deer hide, 3–5 Leather scraps, 1–2 Rubies, 10–30 Stone, 10–30 Wood.
And there is loot on the floor as well as in chests — worth sweeping before you leave.
Beyond the early biomes the wiki documents tables for: Shipwreck chests, Burial Chambers, Swamp chests, Sunken Crypts, Mountain chests, Frost Cave chests, Plains chests, the Stonehenge Centre chest, Infested Mine treasure chests, Putrid Hole stone chests and Charred Fortress charred chests — each keyed to its biome's materials and currency.
Getting the Most From Them

Four conclusions that follow from the tables:
- Viking Graveyards are the best early detour — three trader-value items in a seven-item table.
- Combat Ruins are the worst — three items, one of which is a torch.
- Barrels are materials, chests are treasure. If you need tin or coal, barrels; if you need coins, chests.
- Do not judge a troll cave by its chest. A 30% chance of nothing is built in.
Two mechanics from elsewhere change how you handle the loot itself.
Items dropped inside a player base never despawn, but outside one they vanish after an hour — so an overflow pile left at a dungeon entrance is gone by the time you come back for it, unless you dropped a campfire to create base coverage first.
And chests are ZDOs. Every item stored is server state, so a hoard of half-full chests is a real cost on a busy server — consolidating stacks is a performance measure as well as a tidiness one.
On a shared server, loot chests are once-only per world. They are placed at world creation and do not refill, which makes them a finite resource the group shares — worth mentioning before someone empties every graveyard on the starting island alone.
Practical tips
- Chests roll 2–3 items with never more than one of each.
- Smaller tables are more predictable, not better — Combat Ruins has only 3 items.
- Viking Graveyards are the best early table: amber pearls, rubies and a silver necklace.
- Black Forest barrels are a materials table — tin ore, coal, resin, hides.
- 30% of troll caves have no chest; 42% have two.
- Sweep the floor in troll caves — there is loot outside the chests.
- Loot chests are placed at world creation and never refill.
- Dropped items outside a player base despawn after an hour.
Running your own Valheim server
Loot chests are a finite, world-wide resource placed once at creation — which makes them something a group divides rather than races for, and that only works on a world everyone can reach on their own schedule. A gamever Valheim server keeps it online around the clock for up to 10 players, takes one-click backups, and updates automatically so client and server versions never drift apart.
Conclusion
Valheim's loot chests are placed at world creation, keyed to the biome they sit in, and roll 2–3 items with never more than one of each — so table size decides how varied a chest can be rather than how good it is. The Meadows / Black Forest table holds six items at 16.7% each; the Black Forest five at 20%; and Combat Ruins only three at 33.3%, making them the least rewarding stop in the early game. The best early detour is the Viking Graveyard, whose seven-item table carries amber pearls, rubies and a silver necklace — three trader-value items at once. Black Forest barrels are a separate materials table with tin ore, coal, resin and hides. And troll caves are a gamble by design: 30% contain no chest, 28% one, 42% two, with additional loot scattered on the floor. Since chests never refill, they are a finite resource a group shares.
