Valheim Armor Tier List by Biome

Table card ranking Meadows and Black Forest armor sets by total armor value.

Valheim's own Sets table pairs every biome with two or three fully-craftable armor sets, and the wiki's per-piece Armor (quality 1/2/3/4) columns let you total each set instead of guessing from icons. This is a tier list in biome-progression order — Meadows through Ashlands — not a catalogue of every piece, and "best" here means best by the numbers for that biome, not a permanent verdict: a balance patch or a new set can move the ranking, so treat any "top pick" below as provisional. Where the source doesn't give a numeric effect (one Ashlands set bonus, notably), this article says so instead of guessing.

Meadows and Black Forest: Rag to Bronze

Meadows offers two sets, both Light: Rag Armor (tunic + pants only, no helmet) and Leather Armor (helmet + tunic + pants + Deer hide cape). Rag's own table entries read 1/2/-/- for both pieces — no quality 3 or 4 exists — so its ceiling is 1+1=2 at quality 1 and 2+2=4 at quality 2. Leather Armor's three pieces are 2/4/6/8 each, for 2+2+2=6 at quality 1 up to 8+8+8=24 at quality 4 — six times Rag's cap. Leather is the clear pick the moment you can afford Bone fragments.

Black Forest adds three: Troll Set (Light, +15 Sneak from the Troll hide cape), Bear Set (Light, the Berserk buff), and Bronze Armor (Heavy). Totals at quality 1→4: Troll 18→36 (6+6+6 to 12+12+12), Bear 21→39 (7+7+7 to 13+13+13), Bronze 24→42 (8+8+8 to 14+14+14). Bronze has the highest raw total of the three, but Bear's Berserk trades that gap for "+30% Health regen, +15% Stamina regen... +10% Slash and Chop" against "Slightly weak (+25%) vs Blunt, Slash and Pierce" — a self-inflicted defense cut the raw number doesn't show. Bronze is the mitigation pick here; Troll is the sneak-build pick.

Swamp and Mountain: Iron and Wolf Take Over

Swamp's Root Set (Light, +15 Bows, poison resistance on the mask) totals 24→42 (8+8+8 to 14+14+14). Iron Armor (Heavy) totals 42→60 (14+14+14 to 20+20+20) — 60÷42 ≈ 1.43×, an 18-point gap with no elemental tradeoff documented against it. Iron is the default pick; Root is the archer's exception.

Mountain repeats the pattern harder. Fenris Set (Light, +3% movement speed, +15 Fists, fire resistance) totals 30→48. Wolf Armor (Heavy, frost resistance on the chest and legs) totals 60→7878÷48 ≈ 1.63×, a 30-point gap, and the frost resistance lands on the one biome that deals frost damage. Wolf Armor is the standout of this section.

Plains and Mistlands: Padded and Carapace vs the Mage Sets

Table card ranking Plains and Mistlands armor sets by total armor value.

Vilebone Set (Light) totals 48→66; Padded Armor (Heavy) totals 78→9696÷66 ≈ 1.45×. Vilebone's own buff, Vilebone Wrath"+20% Health regen, +40% Stamina regen... +20% Blunt, +20% Pierce" — comes bundled with "Slightly weak (+25%) vs Blunt, Slash and Pierce", the same self-cutting pattern Bear Set uses in Black Forest. Padded is the raw-defense pick for anyone not building around that buff.

Mistlands splits by role instead of by number. Eitr-weave Set (Mage) totals 48→66 and exists to feed staves — its hood, robe and trousers carry +20%, +40% and +40% Eitr regen respectively (the source lists these per piece; it doesn't state whether the bonuses stack additively, so this article doesn't total them). Carapace Armor (Heavy) totals 96→114 — roughly 1.7× Eitr-weave's ceiling (114÷66 ≈ 1.73×) — but a staff build needs the regen more than the extra mitigation, so Carapace isn't a strict upgrade for that playstyle.

Ashlands: Flametal Tops the Chart

Table card ranking Ashlands armor sets by total armor value.

Three sets: Ask Set (Light) at 84→102, Embla Set (Mage) at 57→75, and Flametal Armor (Heavy) at 114→132 — the highest total of any set in this article, ahead of Carapace's 114 by 18 points. Flametal also carries +20% Heat Resistance, which fits the one biome that deals fire damage.

Two hedges belong here. First, Ask's Endurance is named as the Ask Set's full-set bonus in the source table, but no numeric effect is listed alongside it — this article can't state what it does, and doesn't guess. Second, several Ashlands and late-game pieces flag a top crafting-station tier in red text, but only two of them carry the wiki's literal "(currently unobtainable)" note: the Asksvin cloak (Ask Set's cape, Galdr table quality 5) and the Ashen cape (Flametal Armor's cape, Black forge quality 6). The Hood/Trousers/Robes of Embla, all three Ask Set body pieces, and all three Flametal Armor body pieces also show their quality-4 station tier in red — but the source doesn't attach the "unobtainable" wording to any of those nine, so this article can't claim they're confirmed unreachable, only flagged the same color. Practically, the 132 and 102 totals above may still be a documented but currently uncraftable ceiling — the cape/cloak evidence for that is explicit, the rest is only suggestive — rather than one every player can hit today.

Practical tips

  • Craftable armor gains +2 armor per upgrade level (Rag Armor excepted); capes gain +1 per level, except the Ashen cape at +2 per level.
  • Re-equip any upgraded piece before heading outside — upgrading unequips it, per the source's own warning.
  • Bronze's 42 beats Troll's 36 and Bear's 39 on raw armor in Black Forest, but Bear's Berserk buff comes with +25% incoming Blunt/Slash/Pierce.
  • Wolf Armor's 78 total is roughly 1.6× Fenris's 48 (78÷48 ≈ 1.63×), and its frost resistance matches Mountain's damage type.
  • Eitr-weave and Embla exist for Eitr regen, not mitigation — don't judge them against Carapace or Flametal's raw totals.
  • Flametal Armor's 132 total is the highest documented in this list, but check your Black Forge level first — the source explicitly flags the Ashen cape's top tier as "currently unobtainable"; the helmet/breastplate/greaves only show quality 4 in red, without that explicit wording.

Running your own Valheim server

Testing a full tier list means running Meadows through Ashlands content back to back, which is easier on a dedicated world your group isn't constantly resetting. A gamever Valheim server keeps that world online for the full 1–10 player group with one-click backups before anyone starts smelting Flametal, plus admin/console access to adjust world difficulty presets if a biome's fights start outpacing your current set.

Conclusion

Ranked by biome, the strongest documented pick per stop is: Leather Armor (Meadows, 6→24), Bronze Armor (Black Forest, 24→42, with Troll and Bear as sneak/regen alternatives), Iron Armor (Swamp, 42→60), Wolf Armor (Mountain, 60→78), Padded Armor (Plains, 78→96, with Vilebone as its buff-focused alternative), Carapace Armor or Eitr-weave Set depending on whether you need mitigation or Eitr regen (Mistlands, 96→114 vs 48→66), and Flametal Armor (Ashlands, 114→132 nominal — the body pieces show quality 4 in red, and the source explicitly flags the Ashen cape's top tier unobtainable, so treat 132 as pending crafting-station availability). None of these are permanent verdicts — they're what the current wiki data supports, worth re-checking after any balance patch.
