V Rising Game Presets: What They Do and How to Apply One

V Rising ships with a set of built-in game presets — bundles of rules that define a whole play style in one choice. On gamever, the Game Preset dropdown on the Settings tab lets you apply one instantly instead of hand-editing dozens of values. This guide explains what presets are, how to apply one, and how to go custom when you want to.
What a preset is
A preset is a named bundle of the gameplay rules that otherwise live in ServerGameSettings.json — the game mode (PvP/PvE), raid rules, rates, clan size, blood and decay. Picking one sets all of those to a tested combination so you don't have to tune each by hand.
V Rising's presets cover the common styles, for example:
| Preset style | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| Standard PvP | The default competitive experience — fight and raid under normal rules. |
| Standard PvE | Co-op play — no player damage or raiding, focus on building and bosses. |
| Duo / small-group PvP | Tuned for a pair or tiny clan. |
| Hard / Brutal PvP | Tougher combat and harsher rules for veterans. |
The exact list is what the dropdown offers; the names describe the play style each bundle sets up.
How to apply a preset
On the Settings tab, the Game Preset dropdown is blank by default. To apply one:
- Open Settings.
- Choose a preset from the Game Preset dropdown.
- Save, then Restart the server to apply.
That's it — the preset writes the matching rules for you. If you leave the dropdown blank, the server uses whatever is currently in ServerGameSettings.json.
Going custom
Presets are a starting point, not a cage. Two common paths:
- Preset, then tweak — apply the closest preset, then edit a few values in
ServerGameSettings.json(via File Manager or FTP) to taste — see the config guide. - Fully custom — leave the dropdown blank and set every rule yourself in the JSON.
Either way, edit the JSON with the server stopped, keep it valid, and restart to apply.
Additional Tips
- Start with the preset closest to your goal, then fine-tune only what you need.
- Save and Restart — a preset applies on the next start, not instantly.
- A preset sets the game mode too — so picking Standard PvE flips you to PvE, etc.
- Changing preset on a live world can alter rules your clan built around — back up first (see backup & restore).
- Blank dropdown = use the current JSON — handy when you've gone fully custom.
Conclusion
The Game Preset dropdown is the fast lane for V Rising server setup: one choice applies a whole, tested rule set — PvP or PvE, raids, rates and more. Pick the preset closest to how your group plays, save and restart, then drop into ServerGameSettings.json only for the details you want to change.
