Updating Your Enshrouded Server (and the 1.0 Question: Will Your World Wipe?)

An Enshrouded vista of new lands to explore

Enshrouded gets regular content updates, and each one raises the same worry: "will updating wipe my world?" The good news is that updating on gamever is straightforward, and Enshrouded's updates have generally preserved existing worlds. This guide explains how updates apply, what to expect for your save, and how to update safely — including for a major version jump like 1.0.

How updating works on gamever

Your server updates to the latest Enshrouded build on restart — the Console runs the updater (you'll see "Installing update…" / download progress) and then launches the new version. So:

  • A scheduled restart (see scheduled restarts) keeps the server current automatically.
  • You can also just Restart from the Overview tab to pull an update immediately.

The golden rule: the server and all players must be on the same build. If players updated their game but your server hasn't restarted onto the new build (or vice versa), they can't connect — just restart the server to line them up.

Will an update wipe my world?

For normal content updates, no — your world and progression carry over. New content (biomes, items) typically appears in areas you haven't fully explored, or is added without erasing what you've built. That has been the pattern for Enshrouded's updates.

But always back up first. "Generally safe" is not "guaranteed", and a major version jump is exactly when something could change how saves are read. One backup is cheap insurance against a bad surprise.

Updating safely (the checklist)

  1. Take a backup (Backups tab) — and ideally download the savegame + .dat files over FTP too (see backup & restore).
  2. Restart the server to apply the update (or let a scheduled restart do it).
  3. Watch the Console for a clean launch on the new version.
  4. Have players update their game to the same build before rejoining.
  5. Verify your bases and progression loaded correctly.

If anything looks wrong, restore the backup from step 1 and wait for guidance before retrying.

The 1.0 (major version) case

A major version like 1.0 is the one time to be extra careful, because big releases can change the world format:

  • Back up before the update — non-negotiable for a major version.
  • Expect possible migration — the first launch on a big new build may take longer as it processes your world.
  • If a specific release says it needs a fresh world, plan a wipe deliberately (back up the old world first so you can revisit it).
  • Check the patch notes for that release for any world-compatibility note before you update a world you care about.

Additional Tips

  • Updates apply on restart — scheduled restarts keep you current.
  • Server + players on the same build — mismatch = can't connect.
  • Normal updates keep your world — but back up anyway.
  • Major versions: back up first, always — and read the patch notes.
  • Restore is your undo — a backup makes any update reversible.

Conclusion

Updating an Enshrouded server on gamever is a restart away, and ordinary content updates keep your world and progression intact. The safe habit is simple: back up first (especially before a major version like 1.0), restart to apply, make sure players are on the same build, and verify the world loaded. Do that and you get every new biome and feature without risking the world you've built.
