Troll Caves in Valheim: A Completely Safe Refuge, With Rules

Troll Caves are the only location in Valheim where nothing except you can enter. Once the troll inside is dealt with — and there may not be one — the cave is, in the wiki's own words, "a completely safe refuge." It also lets you build a campfire indoors without being choked by smoke, which is not true anywhere else.

What a Troll Cave Is

| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Dungeon |
| Biome | Black Forest |
| Inhabitants | Troll — 0 or 1 |
| Appearance | Large rock formations with a large entryway, usually decorated with two or three bone piles |
The bone piles are the tell. A large rock formation with a wide mouth and bones outside it is a Troll Cave; without the bones it is terrain.
A cave may contain no troll at all. The wiki is specific that they hold 0 or 1, so an empty one is not a bug — it is one of the two normal states.
The Spawn Rules Are Unusually Strict
Three rules, and together they are the reason the cave is safe:
Trolls do not respawn inside the cave, since they are a single-use spawn point, nor do trolls in the forest return to a cave. Trolls cannot enter or leave, and nothing other than the player can enter the cave.
Read those in order and the consequences stack:
- Single-use spawn point. Kill the troll and the cave is permanently empty. There is no clearing it weekly.
- Forest trolls do not wander in. A troll you meet outside will never end up inside.
- Trolls cannot enter or leave. The one inside is stuck there, and the ones outside are stuck outside.
- Nothing other than the player can enter. Not Greydwarves, not Greylings, not raid spawns.
That last line is the whole value. An emptied Troll Cave is a place where nothing can reach you — which in the Black Forest, where "The ground is shaking" raids drop two trolls on your base, is worth more than it sounds.
What You Can Build Inside

The build restrictions are specific and worth knowing before you plan a camp:
| Allowed | Notes |
|---|---|
| Campfire | Without being choked by smoke |
| Cooking station | |
| Sitting log | |
| Ward | Useless here |
The smoke exemption is the standout. Valheim's smoke system is normally the constraint on indoor fires — a campfire under a roof fills the space and damages you, which is why venting a base is its own design problem. A Troll Cave campfire simply does not do that.
The ward is explicitly pointless. The wiki explains why: the cave is classified as a dungeon, and workbenches cannot be placed there — so there is nothing for a ward to protect and no build radius to defend.
Note what is missing from the list. No workbench means no repairing and no crafting inside a Troll Cave. It is a shelter and a kitchen, not a base.
Using One Properly
A Troll Cave is at its most useful in exactly the situations the Black Forest generates:
- As a raid shelter. "The ground is shaking" brings two trolls at frequency 6 once both a Troll and The Elder have died on the world. Trolls cannot enter a cave.
- As a cooking stop. Campfire plus cooking station, with no smoke management, is a full meal prep in a place nothing can reach.
- As a night refuge. Nothing follows you in, so waiting out the dark costs nothing.
- Not as a base. No workbench means no repairs and no crafting — plan around that rather than discovering it with a broken axe.
The Troll Itself

If the cave has one, it is an ordinary Troll: 600 / 1,200 / 1,800 health across star tiers, weak to Pierce, resistant to Blunt, with a head weak point that is very weak to Pierce and a 30% stagger threshold — 180 damage at base.
One in three carries a log, swapping the unarmed punch-slam-throw set for two 6-second log swings with more reach.
Its attacks carry 100 Chop and 40 Pickaxe, which inside a cave matters less than usual — there is nothing of yours to break.
And the fight has an exit. Since trolls cannot leave the cave, stepping outside ends it whenever you want. That makes a cave troll the most controllable 600-health fight in the early game: bring a bow, use the mouth of the cave, and leave whenever the fight turns.
Starred trolls only spawn beyond 2,000 metres from the world centre, so a cave near your starting area holds the 600-health version at worst.
Running your own Valheim server
A cleared Troll Cave stays cleared permanently, which is only useful on a world that persists between sessions. A gamever Valheim server keeps it running for up to 10 players, with one-click backups.
Conclusion
Troll Caves are Black Forest dungeons recognisable as large rock formations with a wide entryway and two or three bone piles, holding 0 or 1 troll. Their spawn rules make them unique: the troll is a single-use spawn point that never respawns, forest trolls never wander in, trolls cannot enter or leave, and nothing other than the player can enter at all — which makes an emptied cave, in the wiki's words, "a completely safe refuge." You may build exactly four things inside: a campfire, which does not choke you with smoke — an exemption from Valheim's usual indoor-fire problem — plus a cooking station, a sitting log, and a ward that is explicitly useless, since the cave counts as a dungeon and workbenches cannot be placed there. That last restriction is the limit: no repairs and no crafting, so treat a cave as a raid shelter and a kitchen rather than a base. If a troll is home it is an ordinary one — 600 health, weak to Pierce, with a very-weak head and a 180-damage stagger threshold — and since it cannot follow you out, the fight ends whenever you step outside.
