Trial Spawners in Minecraft: How They Work and the Ominous Version

An active Trial Spawner block (© Mojang)

A trial spawner is the block that makes Minecraft's trial chambers dangerous, one wave at a time. Per minecraft.wiki, a trial spawner "spawns mobs in waves, ejects consumable items and/or trial keys after they are all defeated, and then deactivates for 30 minutes," and having more Survival or Adventure players nearby results in more mobs and more rewards. This guide covers how that scaling works, what the 30-minute cooldown does, how loot gets ejected, and what changes once a trial spawner turns ominous.

What a Trial Spawner Is and Where It Generates

Trial spawners are found inside trial chambers. Per the wiki they "generate naturally in every chamber and every corridor of trial chambers, except for the entrance and intersection chambers." The only other way to obtain one is "the Creative inventory, pick block, or commands" — there is no Survival-mode craft or mine route to one.

Once triggered, a spawner cycles through waves of mobs, then ejects loot for every participating player before shutting down for half an hour. That spawn-defeat-collect-cooldown loop is identical for a normal or ominous trial; what differs between the two is covered in the last section below.

Activation Range and How Mob Counts Scale With Players

Table card: default vs natural-chamber mob-spawning values

A trial spawner has a required player range of 14 blocks. It activates when a Survival/Adventure player comes within that range with a direct line of sight, and once active it "keeps summoning mobs and no longer requires the player to be in range or in sight."

The wiki lists two separate sets of scaling numbers that shouldn't be mixed up. Manually placed (default) spawners try to spawn 1 mob every 40 ticks (2s), cap at 2 mobs alive at once, and stop at 6 mobs total — each extra player adds +2 to the total and +1 to the simultaneous cap: 6 + 2 = 8 total with two players, 8 + 2 = 10 total with three; 2 + 1 = 3 at once with two players, 3 + 1 = 4 at once with three. Naturally generated chamber spawners instead attempt every 20 ticks (1s), use the same +2-per-player total, but only 3 simultaneous, +0.5 per player — a smaller per-player bump than the default's +1. Two chamber variants (chamber_8, encounter_4) run on an 8-second (160-tick) timer instead. Breeze spawners separately allow 1 at once (+0.5/player), stopping at 2 total (+1/player); baby zombie spawners allow 2 at once (+0.5/player), stopping at 6 total (+2/player). Our source gives figures only up to 3 players — beyond that isn't documented.

Cooldown, Loot Ejection, and Trial Keys

Table card: cooldown timing, reward ejection, and trial key rules

After the last mob dies, the spawner "waits 40 ticks (2 seconds), then every 30 ticks (1.5 seconds) ejects random items from the loot table for every detected player," with "a 50% chance of picking a trial key, which drops for all players; the other 50% of the time it drops one of the other items for each player."

Then it "enters a cooldown state for 30 minutes (36000 game ticks) before it can be activated again," a timer that "decreases even while the spawner is unloaded." Checking the math: 36,000 ticks ÷ 20 ticks/second ÷ 60 seconds/minute = 30 minutes, confirming the two figures the wiki gives agree.

Trial keys open standard vaults, unlocking them, ejecting items, and consuming the key; vaults "can be unlocked once per player up to 128 players," so a group shares one vault without the key running out. And there's no shortcut around a spawner itself: "no tool can accelerate the breaking process of a trial spawner, and it drops nothing when destroyed," and it "cannot be pushed by pistons or pulled by sticky pistons."

The Ominous Version: Ominous Trials and Ominous Vaults

Grid card: what changes when a trial spawner goes ominous

Carrying Bad Omen into range changes everything. Per the wiki, "a player with Bad Omen seen by a non-ominous trial spawner within its activation range is given the Trial Omen effect (15 minutes per Bad Omen level), starting an ominous trial, and nearby trial spawners convert into ominous trial spawners." Converting despawns any active mobs; if the spawner was on cooldown and wasn't already ominous, "the cooldown is skipped and it becomes active again."

Ominous spawners converted from natural chamber spawners gear their mobs up: a chestplate and helmet (each 50% chance of being missing), enchanted Fire Protection IV, Projectile Protection IV, and Protection IV, plus iron or diamond swords and bows. Mobs that can't wear armor — spiders and silverfish, per the source — instead "spawn double the total mob count and allow one extra mob out at once." Every 8 seconds the spawner also spawns ominous item spawners firing a lingering potion plus an arrow, fireball, or wind charge at anything within 14 blocks.

The reward matches the risk: ominous spawners "use a different loot table and give better loot," including ominous trial keys — stated as "currently the only method of obtaining them" — which open ominous vaults, again limited to once per player.

Quick reference

  • Activation range 14 blocks; default scaling 6 → 8 → 10 mobs total for 1/2/3 players (2 → 3 → 4 at once).
  • Natural chamber spawners scale slower per player: 3 simultaneous, +0.5/player vs. the default's +1.
  • Cooldown 30 min (36,000 ticks), still counting down while unloaded.
  • Trial key: 50% chance per ejection, the only way to open a standard vault.
  • Ominous trigger: Bad Omen → Trial Omen, 15 min per Bad Omen level; ominous keys are the only source of ominous vault access.
  • Added Java 1.20.3 (23w45a) / Bedrock 1.20.60 (Preview 1.20.60.20); Ominous Trials in Java 1.20.5 (24w13a) / Bedrock 1.21.0.

Running your own Minecraft server

Trial chambers reward a group that can coordinate — someone holding aggro while others clear a wave, someone tracking which vaults are still locked. A dedicated server keeps that session stable instead of depending on whoever's game happens to be hosting, and a one-click backup taken before chasing an ominous trial means a bad Bad Omen pull into a tougher fight doesn't put your whole world at risk.

Conclusion

Trial spawners turn a static dungeon room into a scripted fight: a 14-block activation range, mob counts that scale predictably with players on two different curves depending on whether the spawner was placed or generated naturally, a 30-minute cooldown, and a 50/50 shot at a trial key on every ejection cycle. Bring Bad Omen in and the chamber gets harder and more rewarding at once — better-armored mobs, projectile-flinging ominous item spawners, and ominous keys that are, per the source, the only way into an ominous vault.
