Trial Chambers in Minecraft: How to Find and Clear Them

A Trial Chamber entrance (© Mojang)

Trial chambers are uncommon underground structures built mostly from copper blocks and tuff bricks. Per minecraft.wiki, they "serve as a mid-game combat challenge" and are the only place where trial spawners and vaults naturally generate, according to our source. This article covers where trial chambers generate, how to locate one, what's inside, and what you can walk away with.

What a Trial Chamber Is, and Where It Generates

A trial chamber generates underground in the Overworld, and per the source it can appear "in all Overworld biomes except the Deep Dark." That exception is specific to the structure's origin point — the wiki notes "the origin point of the structure cannot generate within a deep dark biome, though other parts of it can intersect one," so a trial chamber can still brush up against deep dark terrain even though it can't start inside it.

Materially, trial chambers "consist mostly of copper blocks and tuff bricks." Most of that copper is waxed specifically "to prevent them from oxidizing," though the source notes some unwaxed copper blocks can still generate there "due to a bug." There's a practical side effect worth knowing before you go in: trial chambers "let players obtain copper bulbs without entering the Nether, plus large quantities of copper blocks and derivatives" — so a trial-chamber trip doubles as a copper run.

Depth, Frequency, and How to Find One

The starting room generates at an altitude "between Y=-40 and -20" — a 20-block-tall band, since -20 minus -40 is 20. The structure isn't locked to that band, though: per the wiki, "the majority of the structure's rooms tend to generate between Y=-20 and 0," another 20-block band sitting directly above it.

Trial chamber generation and locating data

Frequency follows a grid: generation "follows a grid of 34x34 chunk regions centered on the world origin (X=0, Z=0), with always one trial chambers structure generated in each region at a random location, unless a deep dark biome cancels it." They also "can only generate in new chunks that did not exist prior to Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.0" — so one won't retroactively appear in already-explored terrain from an older world.

To find one, the source points to trial explorer maps, sold by "journeyman-level cartographer villagers for 12 emeralds and a compass," which "always point to the nearest trial chamber." They also turn up as loot "in the loot of secret chests in abandoned camps," though our source gives no price or drop rate for that route.

Layout, Trial Spawners, and the Mobs Inside

Structurally, the starting room is a "corridor/end" piece connecting to a chamber and a corridor; that corridor "ends at an atrium that leads to the entrance room," and the rest "branches out from corridor/straight pieces." Documented room types are chambers, corridors, intersections, an atrium, and an entrance, decorated with beds, candles, and decorated pots.

Mob spawn categories inside a trial chamber

The combat comes from trial spawners: one "spawns mobs in waves, ejects consumable items and/or trial keys after they are all defeated, and then deactivates for 30 minutes, making it re-usable." Per the source, "having more Survival/Adventure mode players nearby results in more mobs and more rewards," though exact per-player scaling numbers aren't given.

Mobs spawn only from trial spawners — the source is explicit there's "no natural spawning inside." They're drawn from four categories: breeze (always guaranteed), melee (husk, spider, or zombie), ranged/slow ranged (bogged, skeleton, or stray), and small melee (baby zombie, cave spider, silverfish, or slime). Chickens can also appear, either via chicken jockeys — "5% chance in Java Edition," no Bedrock rate documented in our source — or from eggs loaded into dispensers.

Vaults, Ominous Trials, and What You Walk Away With

A vault is the payoff block: it "ejects loot when unlocked using a trial key," and generates on "small pedestals of waxed cut copper blocks and slabs." Vaults are shared but not communal — "each vault can be opened by an unlimited number of players, but each player can unlock a specific vault only once."

Ominous trial and loot odds

Trials come in two flavors. A cleared normal trial spawner drops a trial key at a 50% chance. Ominous trials — triggered "through the Bad Omen effect, which converts to Trial Omen and makes all trial spawners ominous" — are "more difficult and providing greater rewards," and their cleared spawners drop an ominous trial key at a 30% chance instead. Our source doesn't specify what exactly makes ominous vault loot better beyond that general line, so don't treat a specific multiplier as confirmed.

Some rewards exist nowhere else: trial chambers are "the only place where breezes spawn," and breeze rods — craftable into wind charges — plus heavy cores and certain armor trims are "obtained exclusively by unlocking vaults there." Because breeze rods and heavy cores are exclusive here, the source states it's also "the only location where maces can be obtained." Beyond vaults, chests, barrels, dispensers, and decorated pots carry loot too, and players who defeat a trial spawner "receive rewards that scale with the number of players," again without an exact formula given. Decorated pot odds are precise: 10/13 for an all-brick pot, 1/13 each for flow, guster, or scrape sherd variants — 10/13 + 1/13 + 1/13 + 1/13 = 13/13, so those four outcomes cover the full pool.

Buy a trial explorer map from a journeyman-level cartographer (12 emeralds + a compass) for a guaranteed route to the nearest trial chamber. Inside, every mob comes from a trial spawner — there's no ambient spawning — and a cleared spawner resets after 30 minutes if you want to farm it again. Chasing a mace specifically means you need both a breeze rod and a heavy core, and per our source both are exclusive to this structure's vaults.

Running your own Minecraft server

Trial chambers only generate in chunks that didn't exist before Java Edition 1.21 / Bedrock Edition 1.21.0, so a fresh or freshly-expanded world matters if you're hunting one with friends. Running your own Minecraft server puts that world generation, along with trial-key resets and loot-sharing rules, entirely in your hands instead of a public server's schedule. Conclusion

Trial chambers generate underground in every Overworld biome except the Deep Dark, mostly between Y=-40 and 0, at one per 34x34 chunk region — and a trial explorer map (12 emeralds and a compass) always points to the nearest one. Inside, trial spawners cycle mobs in waves and reset every 30 minutes, vaults pay out with trial keys at 50% (normal) or 30% (ominous), and the structure is the only documented source of breezes, breeze rods, heavy cores, and — by extension — maces. Per-player reward scaling, the Bedrock chicken-jockey rate, and the exact loot difference between normal and ominous vaults are all undocumented in our source.
